PC sales tank on fears of Meltdown, Part Deux

Raz

The low power machines are both cheaper than ever and low power. I just bought, for a gift (I would not use such a slow machine), a brand new 15" laptop with 2 GB RAM and 320 GB hard drive for the low price of $280 CAD, which means 177 pounds for you across the big lake.

This notebook is using though a crap CPU more suited for netbooks, and AMD C-50 or something, I would rather have a Celeron inside.

Patent wars: Apple attacks Samsung in Japan

Raz
FAIL

Get a life

Are you able to understand that some people will not buy Apple because they don't like the product and/or company, and not because they cannot afford it? When I bought my T-Mobile G2 it was as much as the Iphone 4, and I just got an Asus Transformer, a much better tablet than the Ipad 2, and it's the same price again, except I got an extra keyboard and battery and a better screen, plus some USB and HDMI ports.

Acer insists fondleslab 'fever' is fading

Raz

Right

I got my Transformer (with dock) in July, and it was really not that easy to find, stock was limited. Now it's widely available. Still the best 10" Android tablet, I love the screen.

The real reason Google bought Motorola

Raz

Remove titles already!

@AC 15:02 To not pay taxes you have to have taxes to pay, which means you have to make money. That's why Google bought the loss, and the loss has no value for Motorola, cause Moto did not make enough money for the loss to cover in taxes.

Google settles illegal drug ad probe for $500 million

Raz

@Matt89 As other people have said, Google was not evil at all here. I dislike Google as much as anyone else caring about privacy, but the law here obviously worked for the drug companies.

Nail Google as responsible for the extinction of privacy, but for this?

If someone really believes that drugs sold in Canada and US are different, right now there is a drugs shortage in Canada because a company in Ohio could not get their stuff together and has some contaminated products or something. Figure it out how different the drugs sold in the two countries really are.

Here in Canada they disappeared completely from online stores on Friday evening, and on Saturday morning from all brick and mortar stores. HP sold more tablets than Apple, even for one day :) Now where are the rest of the 250,000 stocked by BestBuy, cause I missed this fire sale?

Apple delays 'retina display' iPad 3 to 2012

@AC 19:46 GMT

Wrong. Many of the Android tablets - the ones from Asus and Acer for example - came at $399 price point, compared to the iPad 2's $499. Same specs: 16 GB memory, 10" screen, Wi-Fi. Actually they are better specced when considering USB ports, card readers, video out.

The fact that Samsung and Motorola priced their tablets at the same price or higher means that they want to make more money, not that the production price is higher.

Samsung's lovely illegal tablet: Why no one wants to know

Raz

Why is this Samsung the best Android tablet?

It seems to me that The Reg considers it so, the flagship of Android tablets, the one to fight the iPad. I don't think it is s :) I got a couple of weeks ago an Asus Transformer, with keyboard as well. The task is to replace my netbook/notebook (dual core CPU, 2 GB RAM, but only 12" screen).

What I needed: a decent email app that supports Exchange 2003. That's $10 extra for Improved Email. I can open and edit Office documents with the default installed app, but I cannot show them to anyone because I need a mini HDMI to HDMI cable. It's in the mail. When I get it, good bye notebook.

In the meantime, I use the Transformer at home as an ebook reader (in Landscape, by the way, I like it more than Portrait, and it's easier to hold that way - and I have no problem with that) and Internet access device. My PC gets started now only if I want to play something, for which I don't have a lot of time these days.

I did not even look at Apple. I don't "consume" media - heck, I have an 106" projector in the basement for movies, why would anyone watch movies at home on a small screen instead of a TV? And why watch movies on the go? I don't watch a lot of movies, but the ones I do, I want to have the whole experience, video and sound HD. I don't listen to music, only in the elevator and in the car :) The iPad is more expensive then my Transformer with keyboard and it does less: less battery time, no video output, no USB to move files fast, no easy access to the shared folder on my work PC, what else?

That's what's happening with the recordable optical media now. A laser is burning holes in a material, except instead of stone, it's an organic dye. Which dye, sooner or later, rots. Supposedly the stone doesn't. But they may need a laser way more powerful to punch holes in stone.

Kabam! Facebook gamers fume after script deletes fake stuff

Incompetent design, or incompetent script designer. The script should have only taken out only items added in the previous xx hours. Either who wrote the script did not do this, or who designed the DB did not add a field for the item buy date.

This may have still removed legit items bought in the last xx hours, but it must have been a lot less than all items ever bought. Also, did they not hear about DB backups done before running this kind of scripts? Unbelievable...

RIM workforce decimated: 2,000 jobs slashed

Raz

Title is missing in non action

So how firing 2K people is going to improve RIM's prospect? Here's how I see it: RIM is going down because they don't have product, now they fire a lot of people, those people cannot work on new product, the chances of getting good product is even lower, more people will be fired, and so on, in a spiral of death.

I am saying "good bye RIM", I used to like Blackberries.

And you are backed by which data? I have two 2 TB Seagate drives and they are fine. I had WDs and IBMs and Maxtors, and Seagate as well failing on me. In my opinion, they are all at about 3-5% failure rate per year. I have no hard data though. Again, care to show yours?

It's not user error. Check the N900 forums, how many people can sync with Exchange 2003. The fact that you can sync with Exchange 2007 or 2010 does not mean it works with all Exchanges. Again, it was down to Nokia to implement syncing with more versions of Excel than the latest one. They choose not to do it, I choose not to buy Nokia again. How come iOS and Android can sync with Exchange 2003, but Maemo could not? N900 was abandoned as soon as it was released.

I followed Nitdroid and Meego to see if something will come up, but no. Shame on you Nokia, you lost a customer forever.

Raz
Gimp

@Jon182

+1, except mine was bought, not gifted, and I got it in December 2010, not Spring. I sold it a month later for the same reason: no Exchange sync. I got an Android phone (T-Mobile G2 aka HTC Desire Z) and I never looked back. I don't see myself ever buying Nokia again.

iPad 2 to gain double-res display - but not until 2012

Raz

What's wrong with 1920x1200? What do you want, 1920x1080, which is the new widescreen standard? It has even fewer pixels!

I started working with 4:3 monitors, then I could not find any. Move to 16:10. Now, they are all 16:9. I don't watch movies on my PC, why do I have to use a widescreen monitor?

Maybe what you want is a higher resolution. That's fine, but higher res monitors are here already, and have been for some time. They are not affordable, because mass production now is 1920x1080.

A stinking title

Nokia touted Meego to rivals, but nobody wanted to know

Raz

Title?

I had an N900. Great hardware, but I had to let it go because it could not do a basic thing: connect to an Exchange 2003 server. So I could not use it for email. I tried other email clients, but they were designed for Linux, not Maemo, and were not easy to use.

So I had to let it go and I ended up with what you say, a Desire Z (in the shape of a T-Mobile G2), and I am very happy with it. As much as I dislike Google, at least I get my emails...

Here, fixed it for you.

iPad 'cannibalised' Q2 netbook sales

Raz

Title required?

I am interested of buying a netbook but I have no need for an iPad. I need a replacement for my relatively big notebook, not a toy. What kept me from getting a netbook yet is the fact that I could not find the right balance between the price, the screen size (I want 11"), CPU power and battery life. But it looks like in another 6 months new, more powerful netbooks are coming to market.

Laptops to blame for Qantas jet plunge?

Airbus

I think there is a long history of this kind of problems with Airbus planes. I remember clearly what one pilot was saying, that the plane thought that it's nose is pointing donw and it's in danger of crashing, and it was pointing it up. The problem was that when that happened, it was flying straight. So the plane went up until it lost traction then came down. Fortunately they were able to regain control.
