Apple, Google, Microsoft – are you a Brand Taliban or Brand Evangelist?

Efros

The point is also

that they will adulterate the bread and in the meantime buy up every other bakery within reasonable travelling distance to ensure that the 'competition' follows suit. Politicians will also be bought to push the adulterated bread lobby to ensure the public is fully 'informed as to the wholesomeness and loveliness of not only the manufacturer, but the sweetened plastic muck they are producing under the name of bread (which has a shelf life of several years).

I think we can safely say that all of the companies/corporations mentioned in the article and the comments have been prosecuted/settled out of court over actions that demonstrably break laws in the pursuit of boosting their shareholders dividends.

Efros

Yes Shit, Watson

It's the "subject to legal behaviour" bit that these corporations seem to have the most trouble with. I'm not saying that they should have the customers interests at heart but FFS don't pretend that you do when it is patently obvious that you don't.

Efros
Grenade

They all suck

Apple, Google, Microsoft, BP etc etc etc...

none of them have the goodwill, wellbeing or any other positive interest of their customers at heart, their only drive is to make as much money as they possibly can, legally or otherwise, whilst ensuring their competitors don't.

Interesting

Given the subject of the article, one might have thought that the contributors to this forum might have been a little bit more careful as to their spelling etc. Sadly this is not the case.

As for NCLB, fundamental error in the law is assuming that every child has the same potential as far as education goes. Someone really needs their arse kicked over that one. It should have been call NPCMNE, No Parental Commitment Means No Education. Schools and teachers can only do so much, without the support and, lets face it, discipline given and applied by a functional family unit the kid hasn't got a bloody chance. I've seen a few struggle out of the mire but on the whole their ambitions and aspirations are screwed before they even start. The only thing they have going for them is the chance that sometime later after their teenage years they will realize that they need some qualification or other and will return to education when their motivation will take them through.

$11.7m judgment against Spamhaus slashed to $27,000

Efros
Paris Hilton

the clue is in the word billion

Anyone sending billions of emails is not sending solicited material, they had the audacity to use the billion word in relation to the number of emails allegedly caught by Spamhaus to estimate their compensation, and yet no one seems to have said "Wait a moment that number of emails can't be solicited!".

I was contacted by my bank, a small rural bank in the US, when one of the tellers noticed a Debit card payment actioned in Florida (about 2000 miles away) to a racecourse bookies. This teller happened to know us and also that neither of us were in Florida or frequented bookies. Bank put an immediate investigation into the debit, money that had already been disbursed from my account was returned by the bank pending the result of the investigation. The investigation resulted in new debit cards for my wife and I, no cost to us, and an explanation that the debit card had been compromised by a security issue at one of our local supermarkets. All done with no intervention on our part.

Mandy

Is hardly ever right, and he definitely isn't about this one, why do we have someone with a degree in PPand E in charge of this sort of thing. If this goes through it will be on a par with John Harvey Jones' decision to slash R&D at ICI, great in the very short term but absolute disaster for any future products, or in this case graduates. Mandy needs to realize that without scientists and engineers and the products they research and develop the E in his PPE is fucked, trying to predict which piece of research is going to be the basis of a new area of industry is like pissing into the wind with the full expectation of staying dry.

Plague on both their houses

OS X: certainly not as stable as is reputed, could hang my macbook pretty much on demand. Left with an inoperable reboot cycling Macbook after a software update.

Vista: crud.

W7: Less crud, but still issues, permissions seem to be a bit messed up with administrators being told they need administrator rights to delete stuff, WMC is a joke when it 'shuts down' i.e. it don't. It is a lot more difficult to crash, though I still manage that sometimes. UAC, despite being less of a pain than in Vista, has been disabled by every W7 user I know.

Kingston SSD Now V 40GB boot drive

Efros

64Gb version already in use

Had it for a few months now, some tweaking regards redirecting file locations and turning off indexing and keeping the number of machine initiated writes to a minimum is required. I use it as the boot drive on my HTPC which has mechanical drives for video/audio storage. The SSD gives the front end (WMC or MediaPortal) a much snappier feel and keeps the boot to the W7 powered HTPC frontend to about 30 seconds from a cold start. Overall I would recommend it, got mine for $109 from Newegg a while back and worth every red cent.

There was a similar issue with certain USB chips under XP, caused write errors to external CDRW and DVDRW drives, don't think it was ever resolved as I think the word went around to avoid certain USB controller chips if you were using an external optical writer. Windows 7 - The Reg reader review redux

Efros
Paris Hilton

4 installations

One on a 4GB dual core AMD desktop, 32 bit, took about 20 minutes, another on a 4GB quad core Q6600 32 bit with a 64GB SSD, and 2x 4TB RAIDs took about 30 minutes after updating some PCI card drivers, another on an 8GB triple core 64 bit took about 25 minutes (this machine also dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 faultlessly), and finally on a lenovo Y550 laptop dual core 3GB 32 Bit took 20 minutes. All installations apart from the laptop have been operational since the RTM and none of them have had any serious issues, I haven't noticed any increased time to desktop on boot, and if my machine was taking 20 minutes to get to a desktop I would be threatening it with a screwdriver at the very least!

Paris cos 20 minutes is probably too long for her!

Windows 7 - the Reg reader verdict

Efros
Happy

Really quite good

I've been using it on 2 machines, one an HTPC the other a work machine since the RTM some time ago. TBH I've had little to no issues, couple of BSODs which I tied down to a bad memory stick.

Just installed UBUNTU 9.10 on the work machine in dual boot ith W7 and they live together very well, in the past whenever I tried this the GRUB usually ended up screwing the W7 boot or screwing the UBUNU one, this time the W7 partition is chainloaded perfectly from the UBUNTU GRUB. I have had a couple of driver issues on the work machine I have yt to find a working 64bit driver for a Toshiba 453 printer/copier, the vista 64 one doesn't cut it.

The HTPC machine has a tuner card, firefly RF remote control, Quad Core 6600 with 4GB DDR2. It has to run 4GB of RAM due to the limitations of the Hauppage Dual tuner, pah!, but no other issues found, this machine is on 24/7 and only reboots when updates require it. During installation the installer detected the cheapo SATA RAID card I use (Rosewill 209) but didn't install drivers, following the final reboot into windows a quick visit to windows update donloaded and installed the required drivers. The 4 drives which were actually 2 XP spanned volumes were immediately picked up and correctly mounted.

Overall impressed, UAC lasted about 5 minutes until I figured out how to disable it!

For $10 an episode

I want something that is a bit more challenging than the latest RTD drivel. In fact I would be hard put to think of any TV episode of any show that is worth that for a single viewing, christ a multi-million dollar movie will retail for that within a year of it's release. This particular BBC exec needs a swift kick in the nazzums.

All of the BBC's output is available on various club based P2P services within 2 hours of broadcast, cost nil, if the BBC offered a licensed service for its foreign followers these outfits would decline leaving only the tardest of freetards.
