Stargazers peer into the 'Eye of God'

Dave Gregory

Sorry

I just got out of the wrong side of bed this morning. I was more disgruntled at the use of the word "obvious" than the word "god". The eye of god is a name that would simply never have occured to me is all...

And I am really not going to get into any frustrating and ultimately unresolvable arguments about religion or tolerance or anything else along those lines. I have many, many better ways of wasting time.

Dave Gregory
Unhappy

Obvious reasons?

"has quickly been dubbed the "Eye of God", for obvious reasons"

What obvious reasons? Yes, it looks like an eye, but lets not let credulity and religious bullcrap get in the way of perfectly good astronomy.

Also, to be pedantic; patients are quantized - not a continuum - so surely fewer were treated, rather than less.

Belkin boss 'extremely sorry' for cash-for-good-reviews plan

Belkin Routers

I've suffered a Belkin wireless router for quite some time now (although not, perhaps tellingly, to the point where I go buy a replacement). The connection is erratic, the security settings idiosyncratic, it used to fall over almost every time a p2p or bittorrent client ran, and then about 3 months ago it became incompatible with Virgin broadband without a firmware upgrade that was (to say the least) difficult to find on the companies web site.

In fact, now I think about it, I'll replace it as soon as I can afford to and then get some well deserved pleasure out of the the thing by belting it about the garden with a cricket bat...

New Age

I feel the urge to rant at length and in unstructured, run-on sentences. Fortunately I'm too well brought up. People like this go around almost wilfully misinterpreting the universe around them. Ley lines? Orgone energy? Peer reviewed science? One of these is worth a belief in.

Strange how the "radiation expert" who allegedly scanned the near-hysterical yogic's house found the highest levels in - shock! horror! - her young son's bedroom. Just where she can be depended upon for the maximal creation of outrage! How unexpected! Or possibly cynical?

(Also, why doesn't she just put her son in a different bedroom if she's that worried?)

The Torygraph used to be a quite good newspaper, but it's slipping further and further nowadays. One recent "health" story is about the so-called "genotype diet". It defies belief.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/3917177/Revealed-the-diet-secrets-to-help-you-fit-into-your-genes.html

(Thanks to Dr Ben Goldacre for sticking both these stories onto his bad science miniblog.)

Porn doctor jailed for 33 years

Dave Gregory

@Paul

You were trolling then? And you're still trolling. Just shut up or speak less offensively, please. I know you're looking for responses and will say that "I'm just trying to start a discussion", but there are better ways of doing it than coming across in the way you did on a very emotive issue and then insulting people. I'm not dense, but I didn't get the reference.

I agree that we don't know the circumstances the videos were made in (although I'd still like to hear a valid explanation for either (a) their existence, and (b) his possession of them); and, yes, 33 years is a long time (even considering that he will probably serve less than half of that); but "public spirited"? Pick your phrases better, please.

It is not rape, but he would not have it if rape had not been committed.

@Paul

Are you trolling? If not, RTFA. The images and videos he shared were of children being abused, violently. What about that isn't supporting "real" abuse? Even if he didn't produce the images and video himself, he is perpetuating them, and, by making this material available, was making such acts appear acceptable.

Lords demand DNA database deletions

Dave Gregory
Thumb Up

Good!

I'm on that *%%^$" database for simply reporting an alleged crime; an unfortunate series of events that led to me (innocent passer-by who happened to have a phone with him) being arrested under suspicion of a very serious offence. Pretty soon afterwards, the allegations that the "victim" made against me were discovered to be utterly false (and that she had made similar allegations about three other men in the past), yet I remain on the database. The police did not even have the courtesy to reply to my emails on the topic, nor even apologise for arresting me.

Thank god NewLabour didn't manage to abolish the Lords!

Royal Society: Schools should show creationism 'respect'

Dave Gregory

A definition of science

Being lazy, I spent 5 whole seconds on wikipedia.

Science - "the effort to discover, and increase human understanding of how the physical world works. Through controlled methods, scientists use observable physical evidence of natural phenomena to collect data, and analyze this information to explain what and how things work. Such methods include experimentation that tries to simulate natural phenomena under controlled conditions and thought experiments. Knowledge in science is gained through research."

So, how can creationism ever be anything to do with science? If anything, it's it's antithesis. And anyone who believes in it, well, I pity them. Switch off your faith and open your eyes.

PA Consulting begs for mercy after data loss axing

Voltaire had it right

If PA suffer seriously, then maybe everyone will sort themselves out.

Including the civil service. Nah. Who am I kidding? Never happen.
