Can it be rescued?

Netbooks projected to become EXTINCT by 2015

Tommy Pock

I bought my MSI Wind U100 from a car boot sale for £95. Stuck Ubuntu and an extra 1GB RAM in it and now I use it almost exclusively for everything.

The only thing I find it difficult to live without is multi-touch on the trackpad - I have a unique hatred for Unity's scroll bars.

Otherwise it does everything I need a computer to do.

I don't watch films on it but I wouldn't watch them on a 15" laptop or a tablet either.

Re: If you want Mint on your phone

Yeah okay I probably deserved the downvotes, but I was only being flippant.

As good as LXDE, XFCE, KDE, Mate and Cinnamon are - and they're very good indeed¹ - mobile computing is exploding exponentially, it's vital to get at least a toe-hold in that, and they won't.

¹Gnome3 is dogshit.

Labour's surveillance state

It's alive and well, thank you very much. Here is a list, from the Conservative's own site, of the many things the tories have completely failed to do since they said they would back in 2009 www.conservatives.com/News/News_stories/2009/09/Jones_calls_for_end_to_surveillance_state.aspx

Netbooks were a GOOD thing and we threw them under a bus

Re: Accounting

I had an HP200LX. It froze once, not even CTRL/ALT/Del would work, so the only option was to take the batteries out and the CR2032 emergency backup battery; essentially a factory reset, wiping every byte from memory. Not ideal.

Re: Ubuntu = FAIL

Red Hat did that to mine once. I was only able to install Red Hat and, for some reason, Suse. No other distros would install, neither would Windows. Formatting didn't help either. A bootable Disk Director Suite CD did the job for me in the end

2012: The year that netbooks DIED

Megaphone

This has to stop.

Laptops are called laptops, not notebooks. Notebooks are called notebooks - books you put notes in.

Also, while I'm on the subject, when was the last time you played a game on a video? Computers games are called computer games; only Telly Addicts and Knightmare (VHS) were 'videogames'.

Can we have some standards, please? We're not Americans.

Nokia Lumia 820 WinPho 8 review

Re: Battery life.

Isn't the fact that you only have one device in your pocket the whole point of a smart phone?

Tommy Pock

Re: An user impressions...

"then i could not find a way to correct one letter only"

Hold your finger down on the text input box until the cursor appears, then drag it to where you want it.

Tommy Pock

Battery life.

Battery life. I'll say it again. Battery life. It's the most important concern to any one who uses a portable device, and evidently of least concern to those who design them.

If I take my phone out I want to use it.

The 820 is of no use to me. The end.

Man, 19, cuffed after burning Remembrance poppy pic is Facebooked

Tommy Pock

He wasn't arrested under the public order act but the offensive communications act. Burning a poppy isn't a criminal offence in the UK, so causing offence by doing so isn't possible.

A pointless arrest the CPS - assuming they go anywhere near this - simply will not win.

One can't really use relatively smaller sales as an indication of quality; by such a measure you could say Richard Hawley isn't as good as Westlife.

That's the thing with Resident Evil 1 - nothing happens and then you jump out of your skin and then you kill a dog and then some more nothing continues to happen.

Trying to find my way out of the alternative school in Silent Hill 1 - my god. Armed only with a torch and I can hear something shuffling about but I can't tell if it's down the corridor or up the stairs and I am absolutely bricking it; playing with a mate in the room, we both opted to switch it off, turn the light on and have a cup of tea. The claustrophobic fear that game generated was genuinely terrifying.

It helped if you'd had a smoke, of course.

Fifa 13 game review

Tommy Pock

FIFA peaked with '97, and every version since FIFA RTWC '98 has been rubbish in comparison.

Football games in general, of course, peaked with Kick Off 2 ,which has never been bettered. Sensible Soccer came close.

You're missing the point slightly

They're not trying to catch people or prove who's downloaded what, all they want is to release this report and let fear do the rest.

The dead reanimates as HP ships Open webOS beta

Tommy Pock

Re: I'm reading this on an HP Pre 3

Even if it is, legacy hardware won't be supported. My much loved Pre 3 is in my bedside drawer, it won't be getting the new open source WebOS. Or any updates at all, probably. As much as I loved WebOS, I had to move on.

Ten... Qwerty mobiles

Tommy Pock

Typing this blazingly quickly with my gorgeous HP Prē³ - I weep at the fact that it was scrapped after being on sale for about a week. It's a proper, proper smart phone, qwerty keyboard, not designed on a budget and not designed for kids. Would have been perfect for this Reg item if they still sold the bloody things.

Sigh.

The X10 Mini Pro is the best qwerty keyboard phone on sale today, if you want one; get that.

Sorry, I claim prior art. The universe and everything in it and everything which will be in it is already in the public domain. The future, of course, is an abstract concept of time which already exists, so is also covered.
