Iomega aims at TVs with home server

The Fuzzy Wotnot

Iomega?

Their budget desktop tape drives were crap! The ZIP drive lasted all of 5 mins, anyone remember the dreaded ZIP disk "click-of-death"? 1TB, well I have dumped about 20% of my DVDs to AVI and I have already filled 2TB on my server, as the world moves forward to higher quality video, 1TB will be pretty much useless other than for email and few word or spreadsheet docs!

It's good

It's far from perfect. but for a quick idea on something, I find it extremely useful. but I wouldn't stake anything really important on it's knowledge, like my my personal safety, my family's or my job!

Too may people go there look up what they know about already, just to poke fun at it's imperfections. Well here's an idea, if it's not good enough, start your own one and all you know-alls can have your own perfect little online tome of knowledge free from any inaccuracies.

For the rest of us looking up roughly how a toilet flush system works, or how XYZ band got started and their current status, it's perfect!

Electronic car systems

Anyone remember about 2 years ago a guy in France had the cruise control system lock up on him at 70mph and it took about 60 mins of the Police having to clear a path down the motorway until the system unfroze and let him have control back. He couldn't pull the key out as the system had an electronic PIN locking system with no key.

Was it really that hard to dig out a load of interviews with the man, cut the audio you want and adjust the tones correctly? Perhaps even hold a quick one day audition in Merseyside for someone with a good approximation of his voice?

At the end of the day, with thousands dying, perhaps getting these poor people back on their feet with basic education in subsistance farming, keeping the scum warlord murderers and rapists out of their areas and allowing kids to get at least 3 squares a day and learn the 3 Rs in safety, before we start chucking useless bits of tech charity about!

Microsoft eyes metered-PC boondoggle

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Thumb Up

I think it's an excellent idea!!!

Now if all the LUGs can write to MS and get them to get this up and running, preferably in the next version of Windows, we will quickly hasten MS's demise.

Just imagine it, you need to pay an extra 2 quid a day to play the latest shat-hot game or CAD package, to "unlock" the potential of that machine you just paid 2k for. No one buys the games, they start pirating even more, the game and software companies decide it's not worth it, they move solely to consoles, where there is less copying. No commerical PC games, no need for Windows.

Companies with 10,000 desktops already financially stretched, say enough is enough, test Ubuntu with Wine and OpenOffice, find it's good enough for what most people want.

We see a rise in online office services through Linux based "dumb-terms" using browsers.

Sorry to break it to you Andy, mate! The "inna-web" was designed by adults, for use by adults and it contains adult material, bit like....what's that thing....ermm oh yeah, REAL F**KING LIFE!

As a responsible parent I do my best to protect my kids from the nasties in life until they are old enough to know better, that includes ANY form of media no matter where it comes from. Not just because I am tech savvy, but because I am one of the small group of parents still left in this world who cares about their kid's welfare. Christ, my non-tech relatives insisted that I help with locking up the family PCs until their kids all reached a mature age and could be trusted, you know why Andy? Some of us are capable of making our own decisions and taking our parental responsibilities seriously!

Now go stick your head up your arse and see if you can find the brains you were born with!

Stupid name and overpriced!

Zavvi? Always sounded like a toilet cleaner to me, supposed to be one of those silly Web 2.0 names is it? I always despised Virgin they always seem to charge 15-20% more than anyone else of practically everything they sold, the biggest kick in the teeth and the reason I started buying online only, was when Virgin bought out Tower Records. TR was great and with resonable high-street prices. My sympathies for the staff, never nice to have to work in closing down sales, but good riddance to "Toilet Duck" and Mr Beardy!

Nine in ten emails now spam

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Unhappy

First of many reasons

#1 . Yonks ago, having an email was like having a tarantula as a pet, quite rare, then the world and his dog wanted to get "da innerweb" and get one of them new fangled email thingys.

#2. Quite a few people still think you keep an email like you keep a house address, for a very long time.

#3. Most people use the same email, usually something obvious like first_name.surname@whatever.com, for everything, no matter what. Sooner or later it gets snagged by the ne'r do wells.

Me, I change my email addresses every 6 months, the valuable ones are made up of random characters at one of 5 domains also with silly names. I maintain a list of exactly who has what one and when it needs changing. Touch wood I have had 2 spam emails in 18 months. Not perfect, but I have better things to do that wade through lists of cheap viagra pills and plastic nob pumps!

Glad I dumped VM last year, they are so full of it. Not saying the other won't follow this lead, but they are not as pathetic as VM, the ADSL mob tell you your going to get screwed before they bend you over, VM put on the pizzazz before taking round the back for a good drubbing!

Little stickers anyone?

Back in the eighties Tipper Gore and the PMRC managed to nag the US government and record labels until they finally got those silly "May contain explicit lyrics!" stickers on any half decent album.

Net result, every band deliberately put an f-word in their music just so they would have to have a sticker on their CD, because the bands and record company knew that any album with a silly PMRC sticker on the front would sell X amount more than one without! It completely backfired on those PMRC knobs!

Let's just see if that comes about, this time around!

Of course the MS sheeple will fall for it, hook, line and sinker.

Teen discussed suicide plan online 12 hours before webcam death

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Unhappy

Very sad indeed.

We now live in such a desensitised society, violence means so little these days. The quality of entertainment is such that we have trained ourselves to enjoy real suffering as much as portrayed fictional violence. I listen to a lot of violent and extreme music, but I can't stand gore or horror flicks. I don't want to be desensitised, I want to be shocked when I read the plight of others, in the hope that I will realise that I am OK and I should always make sure I try my best to help ensure others are OK.

This really is quite sad that a human being, so lonely and at end of their tether would feel the need to leave in such a voyeristic way, screaming a cry for help, yet it was percieved as nothing more than cheap entertainment. What did it achieve in the end? Will you rememeber his name in a day ? A week? A year? Unlikely that you can remember his name even now, only 5 mins after reading it...

Then knowing what "da web" is like, what about...

It's circulating like a bad smell. someone grabs it and plasters all the names of people they dislike on it and posts it back almost a black-market version of the list, if you like. Next your boss gets the list from somewhere and your called up and suspended pending investigation...
