I remember staying in Hilton of Cadboll about 30 miles NE of Inverness for a couple of weeks. Had to climb up the hill behind the house just to get 2 bars on my mobile, best and most relaxing holiday I've had in years!
Had to drive about 6-7 miles to get GPRS on my Voda-dongle, fantastic stuff!
The IT techs generally know how to treat data with the respect it deserves. Sadly it's usually some fuck-wit manager or staffer that thinks nothing of hooking up MS Excel-crement with ODBC and drawing out 25GB of confidential data, dropping it onto a laptop and taking it home!
When we speak up about security and the need to protect the data, we get shat on by management telling us we're being bloody difficult!
I honestly think Google should be shutdown and sales of their old kit used to fund the removal of world poverty. I honestly think Google are Satan's minions and as Mike Harding said once, "A boil on the bum of mankind!.".

Disagree. The iPad is being sold as a device to secure a very lucrative market for a very rich comapny. There is no such noble goal as media consumption device, it's like every other device from every other manufacturer is designed for one purpose. To make money, nothing else. They only want the middle ground, safe media, that's where the money is, that's where the big media corps will jump on board. The more big media corps sign up, the money rolls in. The media corps know that if their content is safe on the device, they will sign up huge cheque in hand, empty money bag in the other, ready to collect the profit from the "beloved leader".

As a fully grown adult, you are free to make choices. You are free to choose whatever you wish based on what you wish to see or use. You do not need to follow the herd.
I don't like it, so I don't use it. I made a decision based on conclusions I made on my own and taking in the evidence of what I do and don't like. I don't like Steve's stilly app-store, so I don't use it.
Believe it or not some people do actually enjoy working in the sex-trade, it's not all full of drug-addicts funding an addiction or slaves forced into it from far flung corners of the wonderful European Union. The media loves stirring up the masses by always reporting the bad side of everything.
I think it should be legalised, then it can be controlled, monitored and ultimately all that money flowing through the "system" can be taxed.
Having said that it does nothing for me, but getting it into the open will ensure it doesn't go underground where it's harder to monitor or control it. As we know keeping drugs illegal has worked wonders and we have almost no drug related problems in this country!
However, how do we complain to the government about their behaviour if we do not know what the hell they are up to? If they had their way we would be forced fed a diet of lies. You only have to take a look at wonderful places like Turkmenistan to see what that would be like.
We have a right to find out that the people we are paying to their job, are actually doing it to the best of their ability. I work hard in my job but my paymasters still expect me to report to them to show them that I am worth the money I get paid.
Politicians are people too, they are petty, vain and childish, just like the rest of us can be sometimes. The difference is that we hardly have any effect on the world, these people are paid shedloads to act like children.

Nice idea, but the malware writers target the the most popular O/S. As OSX gets more traction I fully expect it to come into the sights of the bad guys as a useful target. If we were to use *nix as the global desktop of choice, the bad guys would invest all the efforts into finding holes and gaining access. Despite *nix supporting some huge datastores with some seriously useful information, they want simple easy targets and fast bucks, *nix is not worth the effort right now.

I completely agree with you that you should be allowed to do what I like, however think about dicking about with the insides of your car. Suppose you kill 5 people at a bus stop 'cos you screwed with the car's firmware, would you still be able to claim 'fair use' and 'It's mine I do what I like with it'? Your hearing would last about 0.3 secs before you got put in clinky.
Believe it or not, quite often you do not have a right to do what you like with software and hardware. Often on any product you buy you agree to a EULA or some such legal bollocks that states you will not dick about with the insides, else the manufacturer reserves the right to bend you over a barrel and exact their pound of flesh!
I have modded quite a few bits of my kit and I do strongly believe like you, 'It's mine I do what I like.', the law is an ass and often see's things differently.

Much as I like to have a pop at Jobs whenever I can, at the end of the day if he wishes to cut his nose to spite his face, that's his loss. Although there appears to be enough party faithful to make sure Steve has a comfy life until the end of his days.

Some of these people ought to try working an 10 hour day as Unix/RDBMS admin! The only GUI you get to see is the one that holds up the 96 SSH sessions you're using to keep the business critical DB servers up and running.
I am glad Exchange came along, as the Exchange admins now get a taste of what we real admins have had to put up with when a critical system goes tits-up and a management huddle forms around you faster than a line outside an Apple store when a new gadget is announced!
I am a very keen amateur snapper and even here in the UK I have been picked on just because I shoot with a large DSLR, various bits plugged into it and a big wide lens, yet the security rent-a-cops ignore others with compacts and mobiles. I got asked to leave the spot outside London City Hall once by a security guard, while other people walked past with mobiles and compacts taking shots! It was only after I complained to the building supervisor at city hall about it, that I got an apology from the land owners!
So your average terrorist would lug a 4KG tripod, a 12KG bag of kit to a reccy would they? Then spend 10 minutes lining up their shots? Yeah, 'cos your average terrorist nutter is always trying to draw attention to himself when he's on a reccy!
