EU move to standardise phone chargers is bad news for Apple

Re: Music Magpie

good idea for a service, but from my experience they are pretty tight with their money.

I've had a box sitting around for months with CD's and DVD's waiting to go off to them, but I cant bring myself to let them go for such a paltry amount. The main reason for wanting to sell them was to free up some space in bookcases, now they are in a box in a cupboard, problem solved.

It seems to be something like 10p for a CD and 30p for a DVD (on average). If you have lots of big sellers, you are likely to get less for them, than if you have loads of hard to find stuff (which you probably wouldnt want to sell anyway).

My guessing is that they get hundreds of copies of the 'big sellers' so don't want to be giving out the big bucks for extras, but are happy to give out a few extra pence for another copy of something that they only have one or two of.

What I'd like to know is what they do with the stuff once they have it.

There's ONE country that really likes the iPhone 5c as well as the 5s

stock issues

I was told by my local o2 store mid week (last week) that they weren't getting any 5s' for launch day, but would have loads of 5c's. You could place an order in store from Friday, and you would get it when you get it.

Or, you could order one (5s) online from the o2 site Friday morning, and get it Monday morning.

Slightly off topic, for all the people saying its (5s) not much of an update from the 5, they're right, but it is quite a step up from the 4s that I was using previously.

"who are unable to enter University as they lack the required mental capacity. It would be wasteful to under-educate people who can benefit from a full education."

Yeah, it's much better to over-educate those that can't benefit from it.

Better to encourage all the clever clogs to go to uni, and get their psychology degree, so they can bugger off to work in a coffee shop, like a lot of people I encountered in my younger years, while I was off, learning on the job, and not running up a lifetime supply of debt.

Most people i know that didn't go to uni (myself included) instead spent their time doing an apprenticeship (or similar) and is now gainfully employed, where as many people that I know that did go to uni are now knee deep in debt and (some 10 years after leaving) are still not really sure what the want to do with themselves, and spend more time looking for jobs, than actually in them.

I'm not saying this is the case with everyone who does go to uni, I'm just telling it how I see it.

I'd quite to see a 'one more thing' moment on Tuesdays announcement, for an iWatch, coming in at around $195, 1 week+ battery and works with all iOS7 devices. I can imagine Samsung wouldn't be too happy.

Not that i'd buy one if they did, i'm quite happy with my Pebble for now

HDMI 2.0 spec arrives ... 1.0 years late

D@v3
WTF?

Ethernet over HDMI

I saw such a thing in Game a little while back, as a PS3 connector cable, and was puzzled.

Long term, I can almost see the point to it (AV receiver as router, maybe), but surely, currently, there is no use case for sending networking information from say, a games console or blue ray player, or even a PC, to a display? What is the display going to do with said network information.

Surely, all the grunt work is being done by the device, and the Display, is just, you know, Displaying, what ever it gets sent down the 'video' cable.

Or am I missing something incredibly simple and obvious?

but when you take into account how many (current) phones apple have on the market compared to how many samsung have (iPhone 5 vs s4, note2, mega, and i'm sure many others that i cant name) you get a different picture.

The may be selling 'more than twice' as many, but they also have many more than twice as many to choose from.

That is however, far from the point of the article, and i would also like to wish Jolla the best of luck

Re: Why don't phones display the URL..?

NeoReader for iOS does.

After scanning opens a screen with fields for 'title' (usually empty) and 'content' (usually a URL), and the options to Open, Share or Copy to clipboard.

The problem is, the URL is often a tinyurl or similar, so although you can see it, you don't necessarily know where it is going to take you.

Re: Will the 5S still have a 4 inch screen?

Not everyone who wants a 'higher end' phone, also want a massive screen.

If you want a phone the size of a tablet, great, go buy a Samsung Mega. Leave us who like a phone that (comfortably) fits in a trouser pocket with something less brobdingnagian.

The choice of higher end handsets, with reasonably (read <5") sized screens are getting fewer and further between.

Also, a 'loyal user base' are surely more likely to buy what ever they release, regardless of screen size, because they are 'loyal'

from this (from your first link)

"Digital radio offers more stations and improved sound quality, and is already standard on all Fords bar the Fiesta and Ka. It will be fitted to these car in the summer, and to commercial vehicles over the next 12-18 months."

Printed 2011, you would imagine that to be the case, but unless it is very, very well hidden, I can assure you it's not there. FM, and AM (I think) long wave (good enough to get test match special at least), but no DAB.

I'm actually tempted to print a few of these off and head down to my dealership and see what's going on

D@v3

Re: Sorry, but no.

Definitely not standard in all fords.

Very recently brought a new fiesta (zetec, so fairly high up the spec list). No DAB. USB, Bluetooth. SYNC, but no DAB.

Was an option, for several hundred more pounds.

From what i saw, none of the models, except maybe the Titanium (highest end) mondeo had DAB as standard

It might be just me, but off the top of my head, I can't think of anything that would actually be able to use that sort of throughput. Surely it's just moving the data bottleneck to somewhere else.

Can any disks write that fast? Even if they can, if you have an external disk, the connection to the host PC might be USB, but the actual connection to the disk is still likely to be SATA, which is slower, right?

I might be missing something really obvious, but other than external disks (and networking, bust as mentioned above networking over usb has it's own issues), I cant really see the need for that sort of throughput on an external bus.

4g iPhone in UK

Just looking at this

http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

And also looking at the comparative phone ranges linked in the article.

Now, obviously, the iPhone 5 is only available on 4g on EE currently, because it is the only 4g service available, but the way things are when the other networks launch their offerings, it will still only be available on EE. (in fact, O2 were recently offering a refund for people that had brought a iPhone5 before their 4g bands had been purchased)

I wonder if Apple will fix this in the next phone, or if we will see a return to the iPhone being available only on one network (or at least at full spec, as I'm sure all the others would still sell it, even if it's not 4g on their network)

Apple vs google

just realised i haven't used either of these on my iphone for a while, so fired them both up.

Apples crap map app, loaded instantly, gave me my accurate location, on a clearly visable map.

Googles crappier map app, showed me a splash screen for about 30 seconds, then a blank screen with a little blue dot on it, for ages. Finally resolves after about 3 mins, with very (almost unreadably) badly maps, switching to satellite view no better. No way near as good as the old inbuilt iOS version.

3) charge watch

4) pick up watch when charged, cable falls away effortlessly.

Agent watch, repeat as above, replace 2 with,

put on charge pad that is wired into somewhere else.

Yes, technology has evolved to the point where you actually do need to re-boot your car. Great.

As for not getting the car because you don't like the dash, true, but annoying, when it is everything else about the car that you do like, (including the price). Or you could get a car you don't like, because it doesn't have a crap audio system.

Re: " as new phone will still need to fit present docks/cradles etc."

Just wondering if anyone has actually seen any docks / cradles with the new lightning connector?

There are millions out there for the good old 30pin but in the year that the iPhone5 has been available, i don't think i have seen a single dock/cradle, let alone any updates of the myriad of speakers and stereos that are "made for iPhone / iPod". Most seem to be going the bluetooth / airplay route.

The idea of using one of those 30pin-lightning adapters is a joke, especially as in a lot of devices it will stop the (already taller) device from actually fitting in the designated space.

Yeah, i could use a connector, but then i can think of at least one device i own that the taller phone wouldn't fit into, even without another inch of what plastic stuck in the bottom of it, so that's not always an option.

Apple cored: Samsung sells 10 million Galaxy S4 in a month

D@v3

Re: not sure i see what Apple has to 'fear'

indeed. Taking into account the massive amounts of different handsets that Samsung offer, I would expect them to be doing at least a little bit better, than their (closest?) competitor, who has 1 'current' handset on the market.

I stand by what I said. Considering Apple have 1, maybe 3 if we are being really generous handsets on the market, and are still able to knock out 35m+ sales in a quarter in which they both didn't have a big release, and are also (most probably) approaching a big release.

I feel that when things start looking bleak for Apple, we will suddenly see this long rumoured cut price iphone on the shelves, and maybe even a third slightly larger sized model to go up against the Note series. They have the options, there must be a reason why their handset portfolio has stayed pretty static since release of the original iPhone.

D@v3

not sure i see what Apple has to 'fear'

"37.4 million in sales of all iPhone models over three months"

Considering that will have been made of mostly, 1 handset, maybe a couple of million 4s's (i cant imagine many 3g's, 3gs's 4's are still being sold) that's over 10m a month.

Take into consideration that that's in its Last quarter, when it didn't have any New handsets on the market, and many people who might be wanting an iPhone may well be waiting another month or 2 for the next one. I think they have very little to worry about at all, for now at least.

When the 5s launches to less that 10m in the first month, then yes, Apple may have cause for concern.

Smartwatch face off: Pebble, MetaWatch and new hi-tech timepieces

D@v3
Pint

Re: Smart watches are still pretty dumb

"The Pebble's display at least is always on, but approximates time to save power which is pretty crap"

only if your chosen watch face does so. The time will keep itself without the bluetooth link. There are many analogue style faces with second hands for those that want accuracy.

the three that i use most often (change between them with the push of a button) are

1) shows time and date, refreshes every 5 mins, so shows; 1 o'clock, five past two, ten to three etc. Useful because i rarely need to know exactly what the time is.

2) shows time, refreshes once an hour around about the half past mark, shows 4is, 5ish, 6ish. Good for weekends, holidays, when that's all you need. (easy to swap to another face for more accuracy)

3) Beer o'clock. Static. because, sometimes, time doesn't matter at all (during a pub crawl for example).

D@v3

Re:re-setting notifications after loss of bluetooth

no problems with that on mine. It may (or may not) be part of what BTNotificationEnabler (available on Cydia) does, I think that little tweak also helps by letting you not have to have the (phone battery draining) PebbleApp open in background.

I'm having a hard time finding fault with mine at the moment, battery life is long enough for it not to be an issue. lets me read texts and emails without having to get my phone out, (which is very helpful in meetings and such)

the mypebblefaces. site is a growing repository of watchfaces, and apps, all unofficial at the moment. i'm sure those who need to know this already do, but you can download the .pbw files into dropbox, then just open them in Pebble from your phone.

In the couple of months I've had mine, i have already seen several improvements, both to the firmware, and the community led software, and i fully expect it to continue. and I can play snake, tetris, asteroids, and arkanoid on my watch...

I am not affiliated with Pebble (or mypebblefaces) in any way, just a happy owner.
