MOST iPhone strokers SPURN iOS 8: iOS 7 'un-updatening' in 5...4...

D@v3

46% of how many users?

I find percentages not all that much use when comparing things that are not of exactly equal value.

Without knowing how many users that 46% represents, compared to the previous 49%, doesn't mean much.

If the overall user base has increased from (for example) 100 people, to 200 people, then that 46% (of 200) is significantly more actual bodies, than the 49% (of 100)

(yes, of course there is the possibility that there has been an overall decrease in users, in which case the percentages are equally meaningless)

Also, it seems that every year I read these stories of it taking people hours to update iOS, and then finding that they have lost half their stuff, and the battery is crap and the Wi-Fi doesn't work, where as every year, it takes me half an hour to download, back up and update, and everything works fine. I can't be the only one, right?

Saying that though, I am the only person I know that doesn't passionately hate iTunes.

Apple NFC

What i want to know (if a little off topic) is will the NFC in the new iPhones do anything other than the iPay stuff?

Useful things like tap to pair Bluetooth speakers, use of RFID tags, that sort of thing,

As far as i can tell, nothing of that sort has been mentioned, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was iPay only, but that would be a bit like including a Bluetooth stack and limiting it to hands free kits only.

Re: So, for people like me that still get good use out of theirs

I'm fairly sure that real world shops that do sell them (like my local supermarket), will still sell them, until they have no more to sell (at which point they will get no more stock from apple).

They won't just put the ones they do have in a box and throw them in a river.

D@v3

So, for people like me that still get good use out of theirs

I guess the thing is to get a spare while you still can.

Why Apple had to craft a pocket-busting 5.5in Plus-sized iPhone 6 (thank LG, Samsung etc)

D@v3

Re: 5s is still an option

for now, but probably only another year or so. Go to the Apple web store, and they have 4 iphones for sale, 5c, 5s, 6, 6+.

Next year when the 6s and 6s+ (massive speculation here) what's to say that the 5c and 5s won't drop off that list.

While this might seem like a long time, for people who already own one, it means that their next phone is either going to be larger, or not an iPhone, which for a lot of people (that are deep inside the walled garden) isn't a great choice.

I have a 5s, and I like the size. I'm not so keen on being 'forced' to upsize, just to stay with apple.

D@v3

Drop in Ipad sales / saturated market?

Might be connected to the outrageous idea that once someone has purchased an Ipad (an it seems many people have) They don't go out an buy another one.

I know several people that are still happily using an iPad2, and have no desire to replace it anytime soon, but they do 'upgrade' their (i)phones every 18 - 24 months.

I have an ipad4, and am very unlikely to replace it until it breaks.

I would expect (although this is of course opinion) that there is a massive amount of ipad owners of 'slightly advanced years', that received them as gifts from 'younger members of the family', to cut down on family based support calls. As such, they didn't buy their first ipad, and are quite unlikely to ever buy another one.

2 main problems with this fancy wireless audio gumpf

1) Does it not need a power cable? Therefore, not wireless. In fact, exactly as many wires as my 'wired' speakers require. I can have either of my two floor standers, or 5 of my 5.1 (sub needs mains) where ever I want, at worst, I need some longer 2core cables, all running off the power provided by my amp.

2) How much do these damn things cost? My 5.1 Onkyo set-up a few years back was, if I recall about £250. For 6 speakers. 1 of these damn 'wireless' speakers cost significantly more than that. As people have mentioned above, I get round the multi room 'problem' by turning the damn thing up to 11, or unplugging my Pure DAB with rechargeable battery and carrying it with me.

There are many other things I could grump about when it comes to audio / hi-fi set ups, but I'm not quite that old and grumpy, yet.

I figure it spent a loooong time airborne, much like an albatross, and when on occasion it did need to take off, it would be able to throw itself off a nearby cliff face (probably the one it briefly landed on) spread it's wings, catch a draft and off it goes.

Google, Microsoft to add remote KILL switch to phones

D@v3

correlation vs causation

Is it at all possible that the decrease in Apple thefts, and the increase in Android thefts, is because there are fewer Apple phones around, and more Android phones, than there used to be?

Also, a problem that I remember someone telling me about previously ( a member of the police force I seem to remember) is that quite often, a street robbery / mugging, is either going to happen, or it won't. What make of phone you have (probably in your pocket) doesn't come into it.

If upon being mugged you produce a phone that the assailant won't be able to make much / any money from, they will take it anyway, so that you have no convenient way of calling the police to report the crime.

May be total BS, but sounds not entirely unreasonable, other than it credits these crim's with enough smarts to realise the benefits of removing lines of communication.

4G EE at Glastonbury.

Just to say, that seeing as EE are one of the bigger sponsors of Glastonbury, the signal will probably be reasonable at least, due to temporary infrastructure (although, of course, with the number of people on sight, weather it will be of any use is hard to say).

I know they are providing free 4G powered Wi-Fi in some areas.

They also have a deal where if you buy a (relatively low powered) charge bar from them (EE), you can use it to charge your phone, and drop it into one of their tents, and get a 'new' fully charged one in return. Yours to keep at the end of the festival.

While I can see how that could be with a laptop (chromebook) but with one of these, while small, the need for KVM means you're unlikely to be moving it around much, and therefore (unless your broadband drops out) are going to be statically connected to a network.

My mind boggles at how a nice real company that actually makes something it can sell and (potentially) profit from, (such as LSI) can be sold / brought for as little as £450m, where as something that has no (real) product, and no discernible revenue stream (whatsapp / instagram etc) can be sold / brought for beeeelions.

When I looked at GiffGaff, tethering was allowed, on some packages, but it depends on what phone you have. As it is technically PAYG, tethering isn't allowed on iPhones, but should work on 'droids. It's part of the reason I stayed with O2.

I brought an Archos media player some years back. Think iPod touch, but about twice as thick due to the 2.5"HDD that was inside.

Nice little device, except i found that after buying it, i needed to pay extra for the WiFi drivers, and even more for the video codecs, without which it was basically a huge MP3 player. Looking back, i probably should have been able to 'find' them online somewhere, but i was young(er) and more naive. Anyway, as a result, Archos are on my 'do not buy' list
