Branson rocket piggyback plane has control 'issue' - report

Paul Murphy

Surely that's the point behind testing?

Locate a problem, work out what's causing it and then devise a 'cure'.

Has there been any aircraft that has flown perfectly and hasn't been changed over the course of it's lifetime.

sigh - non-news.

Sky demonstrates 3D telly vision

Paul Murphy
Paris Hilton

I really can't see the point.

No, that's not a clever play on words or anything.

What is the point of 3D? it's not going to make a difference to the program, storyline or anything like that, and aside from feeling a little more immersed in the picture I can't see why people would want to spend any money whatsoever on it.

Even given a 'proper' 3D display (such as Princess Leia from R2D2's head) what real value is added?

I suspect that the only subject matter that it would be worthwhile (and where people wouldn't mind wearing glasses) would be on the adult channels.

PH for obvious reasons.

Regulator to probe Davenport Lyons' P2P porn cash demands

Paul Murphy

Davenport Lyons == scammers then.

Sounds like it so far.

Everyone here knows the intricacies of trying to determine blame (for copyright infringement) based on IP address, so I won't bother going into that.

I can't wait until someone points out that 'using P2P <> copyright-infringing sharing', and see the puzzled look on the lawyers faces.

I wonder how they will justify an infringement penalty raising over time 'well it does cost us £500 a letter you know'?

It's a real shame that defense lawyers aren't free, that would probably help with fraudulent accusations.

If someone dies from a heart-attack (or whatever) from reading one of these letter does that make DL complicit to murder?

Anyway I hope that DL have to pay compensation for those who have been falsely accused because DL thinks that bullying people for money is acceptable.

RAF in plot against Fleet Air Arm again

Paul Murphy

Has anyone noticed..

That we are an island nation?

we are surrounded by water.

It's too deep to walk on, and too soft to run vehicles on.

We need a navy to not just protect ourselves, but look after our immediate interests - let alone ones which are further away.

To get any of our stuff to another place we need to use ships or planes.

Planes are pretty expensive to use just to transport things around (think trying to do Overlord using just Dakotas) so we need to invest in a navy that can take things around the world.

I would agree that our needs as a nation are more closely linked to the navy than they are to the air force, and indeed there is more justification for navalising our air force than there is for providing air cover four our navy soley from land bases.

There are many stories of bad ideas in Britain being carried through to some rediculous conclusions:

Beecham and the gutting of our rail network, Sandys and the termination of some truly useful stuff ie TSR2, SR.177, our space program.

Sigh - do i need to carry on?

We need a well integrated navy, able to protect itself properly and with enough flexibility to operate well.

Put catapults (steam, liner accelerator, weight and pulley or rubber band come to that) and arrestor wires on the carriers and ideally make then nuclear powered.

Stay away from the jump version of the F35 - it's not going to be able to do the job properly now, let alone when modifications are needed.

Stop pussy-footing around issues and make some proper decisions that allow our armed forces to protect us and themselves properly and do a decent job of what they are asked to do.

Networked multipack cruise missiles in successful test

Paul Murphy

New bluetooth device found ...

connecting.

Interesting article, but I must agree that MBTs will have some life in them yet, as will the artillery.

Armies aren't fought by just one type of weapon, but a mixture. the mixture dictates the forces ability to take on certain foes. Just as using tanks in cities isn't ideal, so using lasers to guide networked rockets isn't the final answer (jungles, rain and fog come to mind as potential show stoppers). The basic idea is interesting but it's still trying to fight conventional armies, when so much of todays warfare is anything but conventional.

I can see a role in Afghanistan, since an ambushed convoy could defend itself very effectively, but for the traditional blowing up a wedding role an aircraft would be the thing.

Artillery is cheap (per round) and flexible in terms of the type of round delivered, though not the most accurate.

Tanks are expensive to run, but for the close support of troops in open country they are the best solution.

What would be even better though would be if america would stop trying to be the worlds police and just concentrated on their own problems. If every nation just concentrated on defensive forces and their only external troops were given to the UN then maybe this sort of expensive toy would not be needed.

2) Top 30 games which aren't like real life,

You know - like all of them!

3) Top 30 games that will teach parents to say NO to their children, rather than caving in a buying them whatever they ask for.

I can imagine a Wii game where the 'child' has to get the 'parent' to buy sweets etc. but the parent has to not only say no, but also stop the little'un from dropping things in the shopping cart - at the same time as getting things which are on a list.

Hold on - that might make the second list .. hmm

Fair DRM?

> ...Although an internet connection will be required for activation, the game maker said it will

> provide for rustic customers to activate the game using someone else's machine with

> web access...

Since no-one has covered this angle yet.

So you buy a game, install it and then you are not able to play it because you don't have internet access.

So the publishers are relying on you having a friend with web access? WTF !!! how is that in any way reasonable?

Sigh - so eventually you give up and get a refund.

Some time later you get given a DVD in the post with the cracked version, no on-line requirement, no malware/ DRM related installation issues or anything else.

From then on what incentive would there be to buy anything new? the publishers business model (if they know what one of those would be) causes them to collapse.

Two options spring to mind:

1) buy the game, but download the cracked version and install that instead - all legal and above board (well sort of).

2) the publishers hand out the (DRM-free) game for essentially free, official torrents, cd's in the magazines or whatever.

They make their money using other means - monthly subs gives users codes to unlock aspects of the game; new gadgets, armours or whatever, or maybe ad-sales. Come to that by giving them money you can turn the adverts off, or use higher textures...

A question for the panel - if a game was free to buy, what would you be willing to pay for?

ttfn

PH since I might be willing to pay for her, though free would be better :-)

No cheap Blu-ray players for Blighty this Xmas

Paul Murphy

err...

'.... the company's world sales target of 5m BD players will not now be reached, though he reckons equipment suppliers won't fall far short of it: they'll set 4.5m units ...'

So they were planning on selling 5m, but due to a lack of supply they will only be selling 4.5m.

Looks as though some severe lack of planning is to blame, how can increased demand (due to lack of competition from HD) cause a drop in the numbers they were planning to sell?

Maybe because actually people don't really care that much about buying into another format and having to buy all their films/documentaries again, and having to buy a non-cheap TV to watch them on (oh AND a special cable that will _allow_ you to watch them) to make the upgrade worthwhile.

Sounds as though the excuse-cupboard has been opened and whatever fell out has been used.

One-eyed woman wants techno-vision

If it was a bluetooth enabled eye/ camera...

I wonder if she could get hold of some video glasses and mod them to play the footage through the missing eye screen.

That way she could have binocular vision if she wanted, or whatever she wanted to see with whatever eye she wanted (I'd better stop this thinking I'm getting a headache.)

Also thinking of Jordi (?) from STNG and the idea of having a device that also detects IR etc, not just visible light.

Of course if the eye was fitted with wi-fi then the whiole family/ neighbourhood could watch :-)

Cerebral Palsy & Stem Cells

My son has cerebral palsy, for which the only forseeable (at least at the moment) 'cure' is the use of stem cells, to re-build the missing cells in his brain.

I don't care where that letter comes from, I and my wife would be interested in anyone who is proposing a study into the use of stem cells to help with CP.

There is a site which does attempt to link doctors/ researchers and patients at http://clinicaltrials.gov/ but I don't know whether it captures all trials in the UK, and it doesn't have anything of interest for us at least.

I can see that the researchers would like to have an idea of where people come from (geographically), some details on the patients condition(s) and the like, but they don't necessarily need to know all the details of the people that might match their criteria.

However, if people are interested in finding out more about a proposed study (after being initially contacted) then the only realistic method is for the patients to then contact the researchers.

It might be a nightmare to protect people against unwanted contact/ data protection etc. but the important thing (at least to me) is that contact between researchers and potential patients/ subjects is effective.

I would also like to find a way of suggesting research ideas to whoever might co-ordinate these things, but I guess that's another story.

Retro piracy - Should the Royal Navy kick arse?

Paul Murphy

Harking back to the good old days ...

Our answer would have been to send in the gun boat(s) - why not revive that tradition?

Make, oh say 10, fast(ish) monitors, with one large 'bombardment' gun and a couple of bofors equivalent guns, and enough armour so that they will be fine with RPG fire.

Have them patrol an area with support from a support (duh!) vessel for as long as they need, and with the remit of following any aggressor against any vessel they deem fit.

I suspect that they would come in handy for all sorts of tasks.

The major problem would be balancing ocean-going, low-freeboard, well armoured and reasonably fast.

If the people who were at the end of the coach had picked up a bar each and taken it with them to the 'safe' end then the CoG would be in their favour.

Similarly if they had formed a line of people to pass the gold from the door end to the 'safe' end, same result.

The next step would be to get people (one at a time) to leave the coach and stand on the front bumper, so changing the CoG and allowing the last person/people to hopefully secure/move the gold.
