EXACTLY. People are missing the point. It is NOT SKYPE and they never said so. Also, I can have coffee, read my mail, news and answer calls and text which using Ipad without taking out my phone as long as I am connected to the cafeteria's WiFi and in most palaces you can.
Works perfect- but not complete yet
I have been using it for few days now to send./receive calls and text message. True, it will use your contract and not cheaper than Skype. that is not the point of this app at all. it is for when you are using you Ipad and you receive phones calls, text etc, you can use the Ipad to answer or write texts. You don't have to worry if the phone is not next to you while using your Ipad. If you are like me, you like to go and have a cup of coffee at your beloved cafeteria and reading the news while connecting to their WiFi, and you got a phone call or a text message, surely it is far easier to use the Ipad ... No? I can name many other situations, however, each has his own way of living. It got my 5 stars, still need to implement MMS and video call.
I think Adobe is way over itself....
I for one (and has nothing to do with Apple) avoid anything that has Flash or Java. I don't want to put yet another layer. Let's go with the standard which is pretty good. and any site that forces me to install Flash or Java will not have my business.
Not a chance
PC is here to stay for a long time, Google cannot provide mmorpg :-). Desides, I value my security and I will never give in to Google.
nothing new :-)
I lie online all the time (except when appying for a job) :-)
the max I an get on O2 (full 3G signal) is 800k. and it has nothign to do with the Iphone. I was testing on HTC devices.
What about Google control
Yes Apple is freaky control, but what about Google. I shudder to think if I had an Android phone and Google account, what Google will keep about me. To me they are teh freaky control, who wants to control every digital of your digital life.
I am yet to find one single WOW app that will make me jailbreak my Iphone (used to be Windows user and I lost count how many times I re-romed it, and then I got bored of the bugs). So you cannot customize your home screen, BIG DEAL.
So 2 hackers were banned, big deal. I bit "The Register" will ban any hackers of their website ;-)
it is true
while it is true Apple did not invent anything, and yet they had the whole mobile industry up in arms. Every phone release from major manufacturer hope to beat the Iphone and be the Iphone killer. why?
What Apple did reminds me of the Phoenicians. While they (the Phoenicians) did not invent the alphabet per se, but what they did changed the world and without it we might be still using a hammer and a chisel. There is no denying that Apple changed the definition of "Smart Phone".
why do I need it?
I already watch "youtubes" and "iplayer" on my iphone, and why do I need to install another layer on top of the Iphone OS? You can be sure that any website that forces me to install things like Java or flash and provides no alternative, will no longer have my business. All the articles i read about flash assumes that all users want it. NO. In my company, no flash and no java on our laptops. Guess what? I never missed them.
Drop Flash and java
Nothing more annoying than serfing the web and you get a popup satying you need flash or Java? No, thanks. I will not install them, and you can be 100% sure that that website lost my business. I will never visit it again.
Works fine from safari on iPhone
But it works fine from my iPhone.
that is not the point
i looked at iphone, htc touch hd, blackberry storm and other touch phone form nokia, samsung etc... while they are nice looking, nice interface but it is not food for me.I am a touch typist and all of them fall flat on their faces when typing, not good enough. what is the point of holding the phone in one hand and swiping with your fingers with the other hand? how is that productive?
Phones with keyboards, while bulky, they offer huge versatality when it comes to fast email typing, memos, texting etc... or even reading ebooks.
The beauty of Windows mobile, the sheer number of applications for it, you can even change the rom, the interface and one look twice at you. you are not locked in to any one provider. Your phoen is yours to do whatever you like, install whatever you like, connect as you wish. This is why I stick to Windows Mobile with keyboards. Yeah they are heavy but I am strong man with muscles ;-)
In fact I am still using O2 XDA Exec, the daddy of them all. It does everything those phones do with a fantastic keyboard and screen. Bulky, but then again I am not on the cat walk ;-)
too pricey for what it gives
also take into accoutn the recession. Also, you can get sky hd box free. VirginMedia box half price plus loads of channels, plus FreeSat. All of them are better value for money than buying a blu-ray player and discs. I'll hold back until i can buy a plyer for 50 quid or less and must be elegant :-), or hti 2 birds wiht oen stoen and get a PS3 or Xbox. Both better value than current Blue-ray players
should have gone to specsavers
I did and didn't buy the iphone.
You can stll secure the phone and those bastards will not be able to run away with it.
I went today to O2 store and I saw a O2 XDA guide. Looks neat but suspiciously similar to my xda orbit 2. The description was minimal and I had no way of seeing what is the difference since it plastic. They dont have or unwilling to show me a live one. So yes, seeing a live one at a store gives a pretty good idea what is the phone is all about; is the interface slow, what apps in it etc... As such i have to rely on outside review which may or may not be accurate depending on the reviewer taste.
It is not for everyone
I am single parent in full time employment with 2 kids (12 and 6). I frequently forgets when the aprent meeting at shcool is, their holidays, school trips and our own holidays. All thos ewritten on notes and calendars. Frequently their mom want sot see them or keep at her place for the night. She wokrs irregular hours. Add ot this GP appointments, dentists etc.. Furthermore you cann add their grand parents who also want to see them at certain times of the yea ( they are onyl in UK for a couple of months depending on their work).
We all share O2 calendar and we update it online. with the joggler I can do all that from the joggler (for the kids and teir mom when visiting to see and check). goen are the notes and paper calendars. everything now in one neat place. Plus, My daughter can play music whendoign the washing up, and I too when cooking. My wife update it as well when visiting. It plays family photos as well.
I used to forget a lot of kids' appointment and I dont now (annoying sometimes :-) ). Myself and y ex are well organized now and clear. I now book my holidays on time. Children know when to do their chores ont ime -)
it di help a lot and it is not for everyone and it is not a general purpose tool and it is not perfect but for family like mine it is extermemly useful
Sure Ihave a smartphone with calendar etc.... but it is not the same... and hard to share.
This is very convenient device but it is not for everyone.
they have just addded to her celebrity status - fools. to me she is still light pornographic celebrity..
those of us ...
those of use who use serious forms (factor over form as the first poster put it) knew from the start it is all a hype. Apple, rushed the phone to try to corner the competition.
My one year older phone (older thean the original iphone), an HTC touch cruise beats it in all departments hands down. I can have a full day, bluetooth on (for car), wireless (office and home), calls, and polling email every 30 minutes. I can still go home with the more than half the batter life still full.
Yes a large creen, yes a pretty interface, but it stops there. it is like comaring Windows and Linux, yes Windows support all hardware (you are paying for that) and yes it is prettier, but its functionality stops there.
What a relief
Now I don't have to embarass myself answering my children's questions about sex and condoms. Leave it all to the teacher and the school.
BTW, does that involve hand-on practice?
£19,000,000,000? well ...
give this to the police and law enforcement, fire the political correctness brigade, withdraw from the European Human Rights agreement (and the Union), and crime and terrorism in UK will be irradicated, pensioners will have money to pay for their fuel, our armed forces will afford bullet proof bras, schools will have a etter standard of education, and parent can smack their children etc.. etc.. o the list is long
It is their right
I would say yes. It is my business what you get up to in your spare time while working for me using my equipment, my building, my internet and everything that belongs to me. After all I pay your wages that pays your mortgage.
Even if the council says you are not allowed to use the internet for any reason whatsoever besides work, it is their right and every employer's right to do so.
You are paid to do a job, so do it.
It is not your "God given right" to use my time and/or the internet for your pleasure.
I don't see how
to be successful on the mobile scene, no OS cost is just one aspect of the mobile economy. Developers need to make money above anything else. Average Joe does not care what is running on his mobile, but he would like to go to handango or Pocketgeras and install the latest application seamlessly and transparently. He would like to go to his desktop and sync his contacts and emails and do backups. Average Joe does not care if there is a text shell or command line. He does not care about kernel, recompilation and packages. He does nto give a dime and will run away faster than a cheetah.
The first thing my daughter will ask, can I access the tube :-), can I put the latest tones, can I buy and play music (well I know she can burn the music she wants for free, but come one which kid will do that), my space too.
For power users (minority in the world of mobile phone consumers), I don't think the idea of running Java applications on top of Linux makes any sense (most phones I have seen so far including Google phone). I will never use such a phone. Maybe on my desktop I will run java. Even on my desktop I might entertain myself of downloading a package and try to make it run but not on my phone, unlesss I can afford a spare one to play with which in fact i have (O2 XDA Universal. and linux so far sucks on that).
There is no economy for Linux on mobile phones until someone hides all of linux in an Iphone like shell (the gui).
There is so much missing, I cannot see it happening any soon now. There is no threat ot Microsoft in near future. But when that threat comes, the post would have moved miles away by the likes of Apple, HTC, M$, Nokia etc... etc.. etc...
