Vista basic vs opensuse11 same machine

I'm writing this on a dell inspiron 1501 (1GB) which has just had vista basic wiped from it harddrive.

It was utterly woeful with vista _basic_, constantly flashy flashy harddisk, utterly useless for anything other than web browsing, forget anti-virus etc, that just slows it right down. I even stopped the workstation service along with 90% of apps / services. My sister asked me to "do something" and make it usable, and since I didn't have a legal copy of XP, I installed opensuse 11 on it.

No more flashy flashy hdd, everything works better including wifi -- amazingly -- and suspend to RAM as on OSX.

And to the OSX 1GB naysayers, I had a G4 with 512MB and OSX ran perfectly fine with tiger - a hell of a lot better than vista basic does with double the RAM. I did add an extra 1GB and it never swapped out after that, no matter how many apps I launched.

If you are a devellopper, then you will need a beefy machine, lots of RAM, processor and HDD speed. That goes for devellopping on any OS so you don't count Mr. Anonymouse Coward.

I no longer have a mac, and I've only started using linux on a desktop, I'm no OS advocate - any OS for that matter -- but please, vista really is shit, I know because I have a 2GB vista dual core and my 6 year old P4 is way faster.

Vista to XP 'downgrade' lawsuit revised

FreeTard

@Scott Swarthout Mac blah blah

Actually they do, when I bought my ibook G4 a few years back, it came with BOTH OSX and OS9. It was purely my choice as to which I could use.

So that's actually a good comparison to vista and XP, innit?

KTM: electric dirt-bike out next year

FreeTard
Thumb Up

Should be a winner, off road anyway

40 minutes in race conditions will equate to about 41 on the road. You tend to use 100% of the throttle on the road if your on the motorway, as they only go so fast in a straight line.

They are not really designed as road bikes anyway, you put them on a trailer and take them to a track. After 40 minutes you'll be totally knackered anyway.

You get a ton of torque with leccy tech machines, not much horsepower, but for an offroader, high HP makes no sense, you need low down torque all the way.

Yes I'm a biker through and through.

There hasn't been a decent american car yet

It sure looks good from the outside, but there hasn't been a proper handling Merkin car ever, apart from very expensive ones that is. None of their "trucks" (4x4's) go offroad without falling off.

So yes, there will indeed be pessimism, especially from myself -- who is in the market for a new car this year. I'm definitely buying something mega efficient, but must look good and have a good price -- not an issue these days HA!

"....the complete cock-up that is Windows Vista."

Couldn't agree more, I had to unfortunately retire my 6 year old XP box due to hardware failure only last night. My HP pavillion dual core 2GB jobby replaced it, and it is ridiculously slow in direct comparison. Plus I've bloody well disabled almost all the services, including computer browser, spooler etc etc.

I may buy one of these as the missus is looking for a new lappy.

Electric motorcycle

Sounds cool, but will it handle or be a dog? It will likely be a superscoot type thing, as weight is a big factor when bikers go upgrading.

Scooters don't count in this regard (or cruisers for that matter) but a sportsbike.... I just cannot see it. We sportsbike riders tend to do a lot of track days, and if its over 200kilo's then you can forget tracking it!

On the car side of things, those MPG figure don't sound too hot to me, my dad bought a KIA diesel "something or other" recently, and he gets those figures easily about town. Now we all hate his car but that's another matter.

@Maximum Uptime 'til Patch Tuesday

And linux / OSX / UNIX is any different how?

Take linux for example, if you have a new kernel, then you MUST reboot, you have no other choice.

Need to make a new initrd for a driver change -- said driver is your boot controller, well sonny Jim, you have to reboot.

GLIBC gets updated, no you don't have to reboot, but you won't be in the new environment until you do.

Yes it is ridiculous that MS require reboots for other things which are NOT in the kernel, but they are getting better. Who actually gives a shite about uptime anyway?

If you data is critical, then fail it over to another node in your cluster, coz you will have one.

Reboot that node, then patch the other.

re: Too much in the kernel already

Don't think it is an issue to be honest. Redhat always provide seperate kernels for different roles. i.e.: RHEL5 uses kernel-xen or kernel-smp or whatever.

If you don't use it, then install a different kernel. Just like running a server in runlevel 3 if you don't use or need xorg/x11. Remove all services you don't need etc etc.

GNU/Linux lets you do this very easily which is miles away from windows architecture.

I'll visit the US when they abolise this behaviour

I would rather not be automagically treated as a criminal upon entry to any country.

If the US insists on taking fingerprints etc (as they do), then I will not be travelling there for holidays or business.

The EU should implement the same rules for US citizens travelling anywhere in the EU. When they (US gov) get pissed off with this, they may change their behaviour.

Until such time, I shall not be gioing there. There are plenty of other countries in the world which I have yet to visit, and which do not treat tourists as crims.

This seriously pisses me off.

@Christopher Emerson

Hi Chris,

I do agree that the hardware needs to be up to spec.

I have a vista media center box, came with only 1GB RAM (core duo procs)

So I updated to 2GB, and while I was at it, also updated my 5 year old P4 to 2GB.

The p4 has XP (and linux, but only use linux for server app testing -- don't do desktop linux (personal choice)).

The 5 year old machine _out performs_ the brand new (well 3 month old, came with vista premium). The only thing I use it for is playing vids on the HDTV, nothing else. Nothing!

I used the MS test to see if the P4 would be good for vista, and it gave me a score of 1.5. The real vista box reports 3 overall. Yet its crud. Why?

Vista crashed post last windowsupdate a few days ago, in fairness to MS, it recovered automagically (kinda) using the last restorepoint.

It did crash though... I have not seen XP do that since SP2.
