Western Digital spins up a USB disk just for the Raspberry Pi

USB not SATA

"interested to see the SATA interface"

Whilst the info on the WD website is very sparse and the photos very small, you can just make out the USB 3 socket on the motherboard and the corresponding plug on the cable kit.

From the WD site:

"Native USB 7mm HDD – slim drive"

Is that a quote? Sounds like from the film Airplane but google doesn't confirm.

Search scores of own websites

I give:

Wikipedia 6/10

ebay 9/10

HP 3/10

Amazon 1/10

On Amazon unless it is music or a book their search is abysmal. Searching for computer bits is dire.

I managed to phone them up to ask what syntax/operators can be used for searching and not even a supervisor knew that you can omit red items with -red

Re: Because data protection

Yes they need to provide a way that the customer can phone them back (on a publicly published number). Unfortunately last time I asked a caller from my companies bank what department I needed to ask for, they said the call centre couldn't put me through to his particular department. IIRC it sounded like it would have been to our advantage.

I should have done I'll tell you one of my data points if you'll tell me one then another from each side and so on.

Re: RJ45 Sockets are BIG

I know that some RJ45 sockets have integrated magnetics like on the Raspberry Pi, on most PCB's I've seen with an RJ45 separate magnetics can clearly be seen on the PCB next to the socket.

Smaller possible? Nearly all the volume in a plug and socket are plastic with electronic purpose.

Chris Evans

RJ45 Sockets are BIG

"Lack of ethernet is a huge oversight IMHO"

One big problem all these small devices have is that an RJ45socket is very large in comparison and often requires an increase in the devices thickness so massively increasing the volume.

Intel have muscle to create a new smaller ethernet connector standard. I do hope they do.

ARM-compatible... missleading

ARM-compatible suggests either all their own design or that they have an 'ARM architectural licence' (like Apple). Later in the article it mentions "seem to be dual or quad-core Cortex-A15" if that is true it is not ARM-compatible it IS an ARM core!

No objection to FF itself!

I'd expect it be either 'Installing extra software' (who knows what anti-virus, toolbars or malware etc a youngster might install unwittingly) or it might get round parental controls.

Technically it is a criminal offence! Though I can't see any sensible parent going the nuclear route.

We had a work experience lad who downloaded on one of our PCs at least three applications without authorisation. He was also work shy and only lasted a couple of days.

Feeble Phobos flaking as it falls to Mars

Chris Evans

Size, tides and despun?

Including its size in the article would have been useful!

"Phobos is a small, irregularly shaped object with a mean radius of 11 km"

Also when trying to understand tides it is important to know if the moon is despun like Earth's (i.e. the same face of the moon always faces Earth.)

From Wikipedia I've found:

Rotation period: Synchronous

I read that to say it is despun so I'm not sure how the Phobos has tides, unless Mars has significantly irregular gravity! Which I wouldn't have expected.

'Platooning' Re: Already do this...

Thanks for the post Teddy. The article didn't explain the term 'platooning' but your comment explained enough thanks. All the other articles on driverless cars I've read have referred to 'convoys' . Why articles do not include an explanation for terms that I'm sure many readers won't have seen in that context before, is sloppy journalism.

Thanks for the link AC. So TT aren't quite as bad as I thought, but they are still awful.

Chris Evans

False offer for "free credit reporting"

Their misleading stance goes from bad to down right lying!

Their email to me said: "Sign up to your free credit reporting service using this code: TT231"

That seems the appropriate thing for them to do, to pay for a financial report for customers.

So I duly signed up, but during signing up I was never asked for a code. I then found out that anyone can sign up for free no code is necessary. noddle.co.uk

I also do wonder about the reports usefulness, any misuse of my financial information would probably takes weeks if not months to show up. Some people might thing it offered some protection not just tell you the horse bolted a month ago.

I wonder if they will be able to survive this.

Chris Evans

Whilst resolutions greater than 1080p may not be noticeable to most people with a good 1080p source. Most TV is broadcast with such high compression that the jpeg artefacts are obvious:-(

Higher resolutions will mean less noticeable artefacts:-)

Re: "a decent fibre network connection (around 15Mbps)"

I'm one of the lucky ones. I happen to live next to an exchange so get 18-20Mbps.

Whilst I'm sure the vast majority of standard ADSL customers won't get 15Mbps maybe 5% do?

Is there something else like latency that means that 15Mbps over fibre could be used when 15Mbps over standard ADSL couldn't?

Only a CNUT would hold back the waves of the sharing economy

Chris Evans

King Cnut reference misleading.

The King Cnut reference reinforces the now common belief that King Canute was an ego maniac who believed he could control the tides. Whereas the opposite was true: "Canute demonstrates to his flattering courtiers that he has no control over the elements (the incoming tide), explaining that secular power is vain compared to the supreme power of God." (Wikipedia)

n.b. I was in my fifties before I was disabused of the common incorrect belief.

Re: ARM did it!

You misunderstood me, I wasn't suggesting ARM had done anything underhand or wrong. I was responding to the posts that all manufacturers have benchmark etc in mind when designing things.

My memory may be failing me but your statement that ARM 2 added a multiply instruction does ring a bell with me and that it was added with BM9 (or was it BM8?) in mind!

IIRC a talk I heard a few years ago from Sophie Wilson ARM added another instruction specifically to get Nokia as a customer. I suspect ARM would be very different (even maybe not exist) if they hadn't done that. A world without ARM doesn't bear thinking of!

n.b. I've used an ARM based desktop computer as my main computer since the Archimedes came out (1987)

Chris Evans

ARM did it!

CPU designer have benchmark programs in mind when they design.

IIRC ARM added an extra instruction to their ARM 1 design for ARM 2 as an extra test had been added to the common benchmark program used at the time.

If their 'transfer pricing' didn't follow the rules then they may have!

Morally to my mind about half the profit should be declared in the country of sale and half in the USA I can see an argument for more of the profit to have been made in the USA but not for a third country (Ireland) that artificially has the sales routed through it. What the law says, the courts will decide.

Power from HDMI!

"the device can't be powered over HDMI. There is hope that Intel will implement this in future versions of the stick."

It is never going to happen, the power line on an HDMI display is designed for EDID and the standard says devices should draw 50mA maximum! You couldn't even run a Pi model A+ on that.
