Apache threatens Oracle with Java exit

Rex Alfie Lee
Grenade

Not completely true...

Whilst Oracle is the 800-pound gorilla, one with severe diarrhoea & flatulence, Apache does have some power here. They're not an 800-pounder, rather a 200-hundred pounder that basically controls most of the Java servers around the world. Without Apache, Oracle may have little to hold on to & may lose billions of their dreams themselves. If everyone walks away from the community & Apache has the room on their side, Oracle could find themselves holding onto a bag with a lot of holes in it.

The 800-pound gorilla versus the 20000-pound mammoth...

That one will be an interesting fight. Oracle has the money to fight it out but for how long? IBM could hold out for the next 2 or 3 decades & then whampum, we bought Oracle...

Add-ons for Android...

Lets face it, no-one wants bloat-ware on a phone but once FF trims down it will regain its former glory. It's about the add-ons as well as being a great interface to the net. It's secure as these things go & the add-ons. Did I mention the add-ons...

Add-ons turkey, add-ons...

...the add-ons in FF make it still the best browser. Yes there are faster ones & ones with a lot of stuff they've copied from FF & some of FF was copied from Opera but the add-ons still make FF the best browser in the business & Chrome's copied add-ons don't match up to FFs. I await the day...

Microsoft holds Androids hostage in open source wars

Rex Alfie Lee
FAIL

Actually, we do...

We generally dislike Apple as much as Microsoft but they haven't been an issue until the last few years. They are also based on Unix so they have something going for them. Also Unix-based OSes have been around since the 60s & are much harder to break through having had the stuffing kicked out of them 30 years ago for lack of security. Also the structure is based on networking so protecting it was a far more efficient process. Breaking into UNIX software is much harder thing to do than breaking Windows because of this, a major reason why so few viruses are made to sting Apple & Linux.

You've made many broad statements, few based on fact, if any. What do you actually know?

The Business Model...

Thinking about the way MS works they couldn't really follow the Apple or Google methodologies because it would undermine their legal ability to sue the other software infrastructures like Android & iOS. They would lose all credibility if they went on to do the same thing as the others teams but reverted to litigation on the basis of someone copying their software.

How could they hold their position legally if they were copying the litigious party's business model? Not only would they be a laughing stock it would provide the litigious one an open & shut recourse litigation putting MS on the back foot. Therefore MS has no other choices here.

They're not good enough at designing stuff anymore & so they will resort to litigious suck-holing in a court. They're doomed I tell you, DOOMED!!!

Hypocrisy Larry, that's truly funny...

Talk about a comedian & hypocrisy. Larry is accusing someone else of corporate espionage when Oracle, courtesy of Larry & his band of mermaids are suing Google after how long since buying Sun Microsystems?

Poor Stevie "I'm going to f**king kill Google" Ballmer...

Reminds me of "Poor Judd is Dead", a song from Oklahoma about a guy who should go & hang himself. It's a truly funny little number that suits Monkey Boy. We've got a huge presentation going for Microsux & most of the seats are empty. Why is that?

I think the obvious answer is "They have to pay to upload software", foolish Microsux;

But there's also, "The phone makers have to buy Microsux's software", silly Microsux;

There's also, "Not fully tested software", mistrusted, unreliable & dumb Microsux;

Not to mention, "No guarantees", untrusted Microsux;

Add to that, "Years of monopolistic behaviour", tut, tut Microsux;

And don't forget, "Backdoor access", socially irresponsible Microsux;

And finally the killer punch, "2 operating systems running UNIX-like OSes that are much better", sucked in Microsux

Go hang yourself somewhere Stevie cause no-one cares...

If it hadn't been such a good point I probably would have agreed anyway to just throw shite at M$. But that is a very good point & leads to the time involved in network reconnections & then updating the OS. Total fail!

Tesla Motors: Our cars don't burst into flame, but our emails do

Rex Alfie Lee
Thumb Down

LinkOfHyrule, you have NO understanding of your own stupidity...

You have a right to your stupid remark but it is stupidity. Without Tesla there would be little in the way of development towards something real. The market has taken off because of Tesla's input into the electric car market. I'm not saying it wouldn't have happened but their investment has made the electric market a real competition. Why? Because they dared to build a sports car that was super fast & super cool & that made having an electric car a better option than just for the environment. They made electric cars cool. They virtually single-handedly created an industry. The Chevy Volt was built to prove that Chevrolet could do it better but they've failed so far. England have created a car that is better than the Tesla but built because of the Tesla's brilliance.

The Reg does exaggerate regularly & they are a typical tech company with "journos" that are less than honest. Whilst I read their input there are several much better tech report companies around. Do you believe everything these people write. What do they actually know about tech other than what they've written down? Where's their engineering know-how? They write reports for you & I to make decisions about technology we write & if they write something like "40% of Tesla's will catch fire", then who is going to buy one? It is a lie & whilst they can sit back & pontificate how that's not what they stated, it is exactly what people glean from the message.

Rex Alfie Lee

40% of Tesla's will catch fire...

The Register write reports for you & I to make decisions about technology we may want & if they write something like "40% of Tesla's will catch fire", then who is going to buy one? It is a lie & inaccurate journalism & whilst they can sit back & pontificate how that's not what they stated, it is exactly what people glean from the message.

I usually enjoy your reporting about technology but this repeat article is an insincere attempt at avoiding any responsibility for corporate terrorism. You should be ashamed of yourselves for what you have written because your article alone could be the demolition of an organisation that probably created an industry almost single-handedly.

This puts you in the same kind of territory as the oil companies who have bought-up invention after invention & smothered it in just the way Microsoft have. Why would you do that? Why would you devastate a company that has built an amazing machine with little support from anyone?

As I have stated before you can pontificate all you like but the upshot of your original article is just that. You have said in no uncertain terms that Tesla's catch fire, well almost half of them. That is corporate terrorism of the ilk of Microsoft & the oil companies. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Embrace Extend Exterminate... Exception?...update

When Microsux developed their own Java there were 2 specific caveats made by Sun Micro in the legal building of your own Java that were not included in M$'s version

1/ The software must run in a sandboc environment therefore (supposedly) protecting the computer from unwanted attacks

2/ The Java Virtual Manager had to be able to be run on other Operating Systems, including Sun's own boxes, Apple, Linux & also M$.

Microsoft did neither of these things to attempt to make Java a minorly influential language. Basically M$ tried to destroy Java to keep Sun Micro out of the real playing fielf & unfortunately they pretty much succeeded in halting real IT progress, one of M$s major aims in the Embrace Extend Exterminate... behaviour they do so well...A-holes

I'd bet the CSIRO wouldn't get away from paying software patents owned by M$, IBM, CISCO, Intel & the like. That patent runs very deep & it would be very nasty if it actually got passed. Rex Alfie Lee
Boffin

Good point...

I think the problem here is that patents on software can be generated on very basic ideologies. In the USA you don't even have to build it for the patent to have control over you. That, I think is the basic issue. If it isn't built the patent shouldn't exist & that goes for software as well. How it works in the EU I don't understand but from what I've seen of the EU smacking Microsoft, Intel, Apple & I'd bet IBM in the distant past, your views are probably correct.
