MS Office for Mac 2011 out in October

Jean-Paul

Why...

Very simple since if you use the office products in a professional capacity with a lot of automated integration of meta data that drives other references in the documents, and I haven't even started about macros/vba, you have no choice.

All the other products will change the advanced layouts, if you are lucky don't strip out the meta data but will mangle up the document references.

I love pages, but for example you can't even have a document title being referenced in a header or a foot. So if you change the title of a document, you have to manually change all it's uses and now search and replace is not useful for that.

Jean-Paul

Been ruining the beta

And 2011 is fast, very, very fast. Macros and vba work very well as well. Interesting though they value outlook at £100. It's is the one product I don't use. Give me mail, address book and iCal any day.

Apple coughs to iPhone 3G IOS 4 upgrade problems

Jean-Paul

I upgraded, downgraded and upgrades again

As per my title, I upgraded and within a day I downgraded to 3.1.2 to make it useable again....Earlier this week I upgraded again because I found an explanation what to do...Besides if that didn't work I just downgrade it again...

Anyway this should have been par of the installation script...Following install and then the subsequent restore you need to do a reset...Go to General / Reset and perform that. You don't loose you data, but you do loose your system settings and get the default....It basically was running 4 on 3 settings, this made it a lot faster...But still slower...

The next thing to do is go to settings/general/home/spotlight and switch off as many as you like. Spotlight seems to be indexing like mad, now technically it will do it all i the background but the 3G just doesn't have the grunt to do that and it grinds to a holt...

With those two alterations it is back to 3.1.2 speeds ;-)

But yes should have been part of the install script, Apple really drop the ball with this one...

Besides peeps, if iOS4 is running like a knackered dog why not just downgrade to 3.1.2?

BBC news apps squeeze onto iPhone, iPad

Jean-Paul

Whingers

I don't get the whinging android users...Surely you bunch on tinkers have hacked your phone to have flash on it, because oh yeah officially it can't do it either...Conveniently forgotten now...

But even more so the tinkerers way is sure to setup the rss feed you read via your terminal emulator, not? Come on are you linux or not ;-)

Apple delays white iPhone 4 - again

Jean-Paul

What a bunch of ....

As Eponymous Howard says...You lot are a bunch of silly old woman, nothing better than a good gossip about nothing. Wouldn't be so sad if you actually had a clue what you are talking about, but this is just pathetic...

What's next Apple the evil empire has got the FCC in their pocket, lie to all their shareholders and on their filing and sneak this through? Why just belief someone when you can make up a crap story he...

Android slurps market share from Apple, RIM, Microsoft

Jean-Paul

Hardly surprising is it?

Again great non news...This is hardly surprising news, there are so many different Android OS based phones on the market from very cheap to not so cheap....Against two models from apple and lots of different models and big corporate contract from RIM...

With it being so cheap to implement and license for phone manufacturers there is no doubt that it will be the mass product out there....Just like the F150 truck has been in the US...Did that make it the vehicle to drive or use....Well you tell me...

Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro Symbian smartphone

Jean-Paul

I agree

Why? Why anyone would still consider something like that is beyond me. This must be really aimed at anyone who isn't in touch with the market...

If you want to go to a multifunction phone with touch you really need capacitive as a bare minimum, but also at the bottom end RIM (if just email and a bit of browsing is your thing) but want anything more than the only real choices are iPhone or Android based (but again watch out for buying the right hardware...).....

Sony Ericsson updates Xperia X10

Jean-Paul

But what about...

Nice, but what about moving away from the old 1.6 and supplying an update to 2.2 now that would be nice for a so called top of the range phone...

Apple ads to target your iTunes history

Jean-Paul

Jeez

Jeez calm down people...This non-identifieble data gathering is done every single day with anything you do....

Don't want ads on your iPhone, simple just buy the full application or choose the alternative free application from a developer who doesn't choose to get a revenue stream from serving ads.

The Android platform is no different, many apps have ads and many don't...Your choice you are in control...

No calm down will you...

Google's remote Android app installer explained

Jean-Paul

Funny that

I've been doing that for years on my phone, but with me in control and me choosing what I install. Mine is the one with a good battery life, decent apps and automatic backups ;-)

Apple, AT&T slapped with iPhone 4 lawsuit

Jean-Paul

Bla

Apple definitely has dropped the ball on this one. Key is partially how they are going to resolve it. However what annoys me is that a lawsuit is allowed, I would have told those people to just return it and get your money back if it doesn't work for you. Vote with your feet, don't buy it or return it. Simple. Out of this only the lawyers win.

Europe approves US mass data grab

Jean-Paul

Why

Now this is scary it is not just us in the UK with useless politicians that can't negotiate a good deal. I bet the us cracked open their Californian fizzy wine and laughed at us.

Why oh why do we do this. I'm getting more and more put off by the us and starting to think some Arab states weren't wrong.

What's wrong with making single requests pertinent to a single investigation where the us asks the question and we just say yes or no. No need to know more.

Dell Streak Android tablet phone

Jean-Paul

Forget about 2.2 which was only released today

but what about 2.1 that has been out ages? I may sound like a broken record, but that is Androids biggest problem...all the different versions of software and incompatible devices...Great all this new software functionality but you are stuck with the manufacturer and or even the phone provider getting of their backside to make it compatible for you...

And they don't have a great reputation in doing so....

Apple iOS 4 update frustrates iPhone 3G owners

Jean-Paul

Slow but no problems

It was very slow on both iPhones, but went very smoothly and no problems at all. Yes we have stock iPhones with about 5Gb free.

World Cup: Holland to win, Spain to slump

Jean-Paul
Pint

Oh chill out

@ac chill out jongeman. FIFA et al but more importantly nearly all supporter material refers to holland. Don't make it even more confusing for our foreign friends. The two can be interchanged, ever been to one of our foreign embassies?

Besides bar Utrecht, there isn't much to the Netherlands anyway, and that's coming from a zeeuw ;-)

Anyway more importantly our our football chants go like; Hup Holland Hup

You seem to have the same chip on your shoulder like our Scottish friends have with England.

Microsoft throws Office 2010 at shoppers

Jean-Paul

How about

The ability to actually use referenced meta data in headers and rooters instead of manually adjusting it and breaking the links for ms office users. Especially since you started talking about following procedures ;-)

Or just keep formatting intact without throwing the fonts out of place. That would be a good start. I agree open office is ok for a home user ish. But I wouldn't even trust my cv with it, the bureaus use automated integration with embedded metadata for their searches. So if you don't set your properties correct you don't show up at the top of the list. Also if the formatting is different than intended chances are you are out in the first sift round.

With ms office being so cheap I would not recommend open office to anyone.

Lone workers will like being tracked, says Orange

Jean-Paul

Flipping heck

Talk about non news, I managed a team that installed nearly 7000 of these in the last year. Combination of gps and triangulation (using the popular situation), automated tracking both in and out of vehicle and as a unit. Automatic alerted when no status update received etc...

Ps. Those who say can't you call have absolutely no idea what true lone workers are.

Feds move in on elite iPad email leak

Jean-Paul

Verizon will be

the one who is laughing ;-) And AT&T , oh dear this could be a very very costly mistake. Would be enough for me to switch providers.

And it is no surprise that the FBI is involved as this is very serious, I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised that in the US AT&T would have needed to obtain a status to the equivalent of listX in the UK. Having had their infrastructure compromised and loosing data that way oops...

I guess the IPS vendors will be queueing up, hmmm wonder whether AT&T sells to AT&T...

Canonical: Ubuntu tablets due early 2011

Page of A4

Well a £250 Aspire One can't display a full page of A4 that you can read easily, let alone comment on....

New wave of superphones poised to challenge iPhone 4

Jean-Paul
WTF?

Comparing spec sheets

When do they ever learn, comparing spec sheets is not going to determine how easy/good it is to use. That's something people with the mental age of a 5 year old do.

Standby hours wow ;-) I'd be more interested in actually useage hours when the screen, processor, telephone elements are working...Much more interesting opposed to leaving it alone and not using it...

Me, I'm the one where you can actually update the software on the phone to the latest function and are not crippled by waiting on the operator or HTC saying they won't support that version on a 3 months old phone ;-) Or Sony releasing their top of the line with a full release behind what is current. Or each and every manufacturer making their own UI on top making the phone look an inconsistent mess....

Guess what my phone is

Home Office launches urgent review of illegal police stop'n'search

Jean-Paul

I wouldn't run

away when chased by police with guns ;-) Not good what happened, but that is not your normal stop and search...And when you then go on the run, well there will be concequences...

Jean-Paul

So what's the problem?

I've been stopped twice only takes a minute or two and didn't hurt ;-) can we stop all this bureaucratic nonsense and just let them get on with it.

Done nothing, carrying nothing, you've got nothing to fear.

Please don't let their be stupid compensation payouts, we are broke as it is, and it is our tax payers money that has to be used for this.

Such a daft situation.

Microsoft rejects porn, iPad protesters fake it

Jean-Paul
Gates Halo

MS is clever

They've finally realised that people want some consistency and software that actually works and not be afraid of using to loose their details...Good on them putting some checks and balances on their store, it's that lack of verification on the Google MarketPlace that stops my wife, and me using it....

I can't believe there are so many dumb posts about the Apple model...You can put any logical type of media on it regarding any subject, all you do is convert it into the correct format. No need to compromise your device through jail breaking and the sorts. Sure you can't download it through the online iTunes store on the device but it doesn't limit you to the iTunes Store so what is the problem?

Three intros second-gen MiFi

Jean-Paul

Battery life?

No word on the battery life? The biggest flaw of the original device? An iPad will outlast it three times. It could have been interesting but only if it lasts a bit longer...

Advertisers set iPad pester-standards

Jean-Paul

Keyboard warriors

The keyboard warriors are out in force again, do you lots ever really use something you moan about? As per the "walled garden" post you have your freedom so don't repeat that populist nonsense. And then with iads, well the decision to use it is that of the developer and not apple. So boycott the developer and don't use or buy their app. Sterling and raping your bandwidth, unbelievable bunch of ignorant panic merchants.

Regent Street blocked by iPad fanboi swarm

Jean-Paul
WTF?

Don't know what worse

just being spiteful, or being so dumb that people don't even recognise their own fear and jealousy...

For a device and owners so 'hated' on these pages, there does seem to be a lot of interest....

Jean-Paul

MK

Yep I was at MK this morning at 630 and around 830 walked out with my 64Gb 3G...Lots of water, starbucks and danish/muffins were laid on by Apple....

Already got my PDFs loaded and don't have to carry than 10k pages contract around with me...Me and my back are happy...

Apple iPad

Jean-Paul

Lack of imagination

Trouble is many people lack imagination...I for one have already got my large file PDF's on it and for the first time in year can review and annotate a full page at a time instead of scrolling all the time...The article says odd screen size, no...perfect screen size for reading and managing docs...No more paper waste for me...

iPad to become inflight fatcat fun-slab

Jean-Paul

it makes me laugh

when I see the faces on some people when my two angels fly with me in business class....At least when they want to walk around they don't have to wake me up and can just walk around me :-) Airhostesses make great babysitters two....Nope no problem at all...And it is even better to see some eat humble pie when they realise that not all children are noise trantrum ridden stinky objects....So are like their parents, intelligent and well behaved...

Economy, no thank you...Shared iPad no thank you either, I'll have my own thank you very much...

Adobe clutches chance to bury Steve Jobs 'hog' insult

Jean-Paul

Perspective

So let's get this into perspective, flash introduces hardware acceleration in version 10.1 which is not even out yet...And at the same time Apple is helping Adobe by publishing these API's...

Funny all this talk about bad architecture etc as before this version Flash didn't use hardware acceleration on Windows either....So what was the excuse before this version for the bad performance?

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 smartphone

Jean-Paul

So close...

Yet so far...I would really like one of these...But the whole Android software update cycle leaves me cold...Version 2.x has been out ages, and yet a new phone gets released with an old version...

And you are dependent on the phone manufacturer to release an update...Well sorry but no phone manufacturer besides (Apple) has got a good track record of doing that....

Pinhead Mac Trojan sticks it to fanbois

Jean-Paul

Hmm

So this will happen to users who download an illegal copy of software which is already installed on every mac. And yes is included on your discs when you reinstall. And even if you can't find that disc apple will send you a replacement for a nominal fee. I'd like to think that the majority of people run normal legal software.

Then the small group that doesn't, well if you do run illegal software you really should know what you are doing. And having little snitch installed for

that group is absolutely essential to stop apps phoning home. So yes I do think it is a valid point that you have to be stupid to keep running this after you installed it. And for incoming connections there is the built in firewall which is switched on by default.

But what's makes me most skeptical is that iirc intego was part of a macheist even which included a one year subscription. That subscription is running out next month. A scare might get quite a few customers convert to becomming a paid customer for another year ;-) cynical moi no!

Needing an antivirus app to detect and remove? Come on just drag it to the trash.

Apple bans Pulitzer Prize political cartoons from iPhone

Jean-Paul

Win win

for the amazing PR machine...this cartoonist is getting his publicity and lots of hits....and there isn't a day that Apple isn't on these pages...

Sorry what was the problem again?

IT pay is up for temps and perms

Jean-Paul

Yes right...

Yeah right when was this 'research' done then? There hasn't been any public sector recruiting of significance in the last 3 months.....Lot and lots of banking jobs though....Rates are plummeting on a weekly basis...

I would love to see where they get their info from...

Apple to reveal hallowed iPhone 4.0 on Thursday

Jean-Paul

Ignorance is bliss

Well obviously you have never used an iPhone and have no understanding on what you actually need multi-tasking for DANIEL B. Unbelievable now we need to multi-tasking to copy from a spreadsheet into email. So what processing is that spreadsheet supposed to do when you focus on the mail app?

Learn what multi-tasking is first before commenting with populist untruths...

Sure, yes if you said you wanted to listen to spotify in an open browser window in the background whilst copying stuff from your spreadsheet to email you may have a point. Apple hasn't allowed that . But you can always put you music into the built-in iPod and listen to that ;-) Whilst copying from your spreadsheet into your email....Something that was possible for a very long time...

Apple understates iPad demand

Jean-Paul

Boyfriend by spec list too?

Just wonder whether M GALE has a similar spec list for his boyfriend? Did you see Jekyll & Hyde? or indeed anything else, people buying on perusing specs really make me laugh...Totally miss the point...Reminds me of when I was seven, I came to the conclusion that the Lambo was o.1 second faster to 60, so must be better than the Ferrari...Ah well at least some of us learn from our mistakes....

Tories to cut IT to keep National Insurance down

Jean-Paul

Well thats

them loosing my vote....Not a good idea at all in this volitile market to stop spending...This will increase unemployment to unprecedented levels...

Video giant embraces Flash-phobic iPad with HTML 5

Jean-Paul
Jobs Horns

Video 2000 was better as well

The best has nothing to do with this...And Adobe could have had it all if they weren't so stubborn. This is a clear message that serious content producers are taking these devices very serious and 'get it' unlike some developers who like 'the best'....

Personally I never liked the flash container for video, but hey it did its trick...If they don't play the game, flash will only be left on silly kiddy sites and silly online game sites....Don't underestimate the power of lobby with SJ...

Official: Sony Ericsson X10 has no multi-touch hardware

Jean-Paul

But has it...

flash and multi-tasking....That should keep the anti-Apple posse happy, and they can keep saying how multi-touch is not necessary...What's next, they are going to get their stylus out :-)

DfT scraps IT projects worth £15.4m

Jean-Paul

How come...

it feels this report makes it look like a bad thing....The decision not to go ahead with a project is one that should be evaluated by the project board at every stage boundary within a project lifecycle.

I'm with John Smith, others use much more creative language or should be monitored more closely as to which decisions made them continue. Hold those executives to account :-)

Android - the winning formula for tablets and netbooks?

Jean-Paul

So which version of Android then

So which version of Android do these devices use then? And what UI? The problem with Android is that you can't just install a version update, you have to wait until your manufacturers releases it...And then each and every single one seems to be making their own UI enhancements on it....I think Androids biggest strength is its biggest weakness.

Sure thousands of technology people like it, but millions of end users would just like a device that works and is recognisable and integrates well...Just my opinion...

Apple turns the flamethrower on Android

Jean-Paul

Good on them...

I would protect what I believed to be mine, don't care which company...They own the patent, they can protect them...Voice your anger to the patent system that awards them in the first place not the people who own them...

Experts rubbish iPhone for health use

Jean-Paul

Lack of market knowledge..

Still amazes me the lack of market knowledge in IT department...The iPhone has got a variety of hotswap battery packs available....And they work very well...And eh...session persistence does not have to be at the client, but can be on the iPhone as well..All depends on how your server application handles it as well...Not hard to do...

Elgato intros networked HD-capable TV tuner

Jean-Paul

Unbelievable

Love the hobbyist on here who can make it cheaper, few more wires, bit more heat generated, much larger box, have to reboot every night...And uses ten times more power so within a year it actually already cost you more. Not to mention the time required to build it in the first place, and all to save a measly £100...But hey the testosterone worked, you build that...

Bit like the bloke down your street who tells his wife not to get a Winnabagoo...Nah much cheaper to buy a ford transit, cut out some window, bit of wood panelling and a mattress on the floor. Voila a much cheaper Camper Van :-)

PS. the HDHomerun also doesn't do DVB-T2...Both of these boxes are obsolute already....But why can't the UK just join in with the rest...Australia and France for example have quite happily HD over DVB-T....

Sony Ericsson snubbed Google over Nexus One

Jean-Paul

Some may like it, but...

Some may like it, but I think that is the biggest downfall with Android....You have a vanilla UI with the Google phone...HTC do a little bit of their own, Motorola does a lot and then the Sony Ericsson models feel different yet again....Where is the consistency in user experience? I think its greatest strengths open platform and flexibility are at the same time its biggest downfall....

Sony, Vodafone vie for X10 UK launch first

Jean-Paul

Agree

Couldn't agree more...And also the user interface and experience, nearly everyone seems to be making their own skin...No two devices operate in the same way....It's greatest asset as touted by techies is its openness, but yet that is also the biggest downfall in my opinion...

Apple updates iPhone OS

Jean-Paul

Ofcourse you can go back

Not that I've ever had a need, but I appreciate some may for what ever reason...RTFM and you find out how you can go back to an earlier version...You can even choose exactly which version....If would not move along if I was you, but take some time to read the manual...

Apple sits on critical Mac bug for 7 months (and counting)

Jean-Paul

Really

From securityreasons own website, which may I add integrates google adds like it is their own content and thus make people click on the links...Very odd for a security firm...

Anyway don't they admit their examples don't work on their own website, but then state that that doesn't mean OSX is safe...So how about posting an example that actually works and demonstrates this vulnerability on what it does...

I can't get my machine to crash....

A New Year's call to Apple: publish and be damned

Jean-Paul
Thumb Up

Kernel vs app

He kernel defaults to 32 unless you run a server. But the apps default to 64 bit.

iPhone worm hjacks ING customers

Jean-Paul

Cheapskates

Just demonstrates that the value of the iPhone is more than just buying the device and the official charges. Used to be called TCO. Whilst it is not right to phish and this is a script kiddie using the work of someone else. But come on if you really must hack a device than also take some responsibility on knowing what to do. And especially when installing ssh. I am gob smacked someone is willing to use the command line yet don change the passwords. Unless they use some other app that tunnels through ssh in which case I stand corrected.

Regardless jailbreaking and using software of questional origin. Well you really need to know what you are doing. Otherwise the cheap approach could cost you. I do wonder how many people who got their os from a newsgroup or torrent are buying and transacting online. Scary stuff.

Oh and btw. When you install osx (the desktop/server version as you don't do that on the iPhone) ssh is enabled during install only as is apple ard. The default user during installation is root and there is also a default password which is different on each machine but is hardware dependent. The moment the install is complete ssh is disabled again and ard is only available with the newly created account. I know as this create ability allows me to install osx fully remotely on a machine without keyboard, screen and not even a DVD drive. Brilliant and working very well.
