Oracle 'fesses up: Java security flaws more than storm in teacup

Is there a more secure VM?

Could users replace Oracle Java with IBM Java or some other version for a more secure experience?

They should have copied it. That seemed way more fun.

Panasonic: We'll save Earth by turning CO2 into booze

Richard Wharram
Mushroom

Re: News flash from 25 years in the future...

No CO2 from cars is good though surely? What's the greenhouse effect of drinking booze? Beery-farts smell like the end of the world to me.

Also, I think the efficiency might need improving a touch to make this a cheap fuel for cars.

And farts for that matter.

More likely...

More likely to produce methanol than ethanol at a guess.

My reasoning is that it current mainly produces formic acid. In humans formic acid is produced from the chain:

methanol -> formaldehyde -> formic acid

The reactions being triggered by the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase respectively.

The chain for ethanol (non-tramp booze) is:

ethanol -> acetaldehyde -> acetic acid.

So from only my hazy memories of how hangovers work and why tramps go blind I deduce that it is more likely to produce meths than single malts.

Of course meths can run cars. There's a campaign for it somewhere. It's not a top tipple though.

Global mercury ban to hit electronics, plastics, power prices

Richard Wharram

Thiomersal?

Does this just apply to straight mercury or to compounds as well?

There's enough scare stories about Thiomersal from anti-vaxxers making it difficult to get vaccines with the appropriate preservative for hot countries as it is.

@AC

As I thought. He did DDoS Barrysworld in a hissy-fit as 155&Rising remembers here:

"And beating l33t professional hax0r www.kimble.org and his aimbot in ra2, only to have him nuke b0rk.co.uk's irc bouncer afterwards and throw dos attacks at Barrysworld for the next week or so in revenge. ph34r the hacker dog ;)"

My old Barrysworld chums will be full of stories of his great prickery.

Easily explained.

Because the galaxy is both a long long time ago AND far far away, a message sent via non-relativistic means then and there would reach us here here and now now.

Just requires some Force precognition to look into the future to know to send it.

(I can't believe I typed that to be honest.)

Amazon-bashed HMV calls in administrators, seeks buyer

Richard Wharram

Browsing

The USP HMV had over supermarkets and the like was a large back-catalogue to browse through. Unfortunately that's been completely undermined by online retailers where you don't have to browse, you can search. From home.

A pincer movement of market developments has left HMV with nothing to offer.

Brazilian slammer guards nab mobe-smuggling CAT

Richard Wharram

It makes no sense

How do you persuade a cat to enter a prison?

Presumably only by standing in front of the gate and giving it a boot at the right moment. If you're going to do that you might as well just chuck it over the wall.

(The contraband, not the cat.)

Test: ARIAL SUCKS !!!!!!!!

Richard Wharram

Re: If it gets rid of Arial and Times New Roman...

Arial is boring and was overused in the 90s. Get some imagination and pick something different :)

Personally I'd go for Ubuntu web-font for websites and Verdana for Windows but there's plenty of decent choices that don't make you look like a bank 20 years ago.

Richard Wharram
Stop

Re: I'm sold

There are more than 3 fonts on Windows!

Calibri/Cambria is OK. Much better than the pre-2007 Word defaults of Arial and TNR.

Verdana is more readable though.

Comic Sans is not an option except for dicks.

Richard Wharram

I'm sold

If it gets rid of Arial and Times New Roman then this is the best patch ever!

It's the same as my 24" monitor too but you can have higher dpi than that. See fruity retina displays for example.

Same as in every western country. French tummy-sticks are emptied nightly due to the availability of Le Pron Internetique. Hence Les Boules are somewhat reduced in potency compared to the 80s days of relying on les magazines or le bush de pron.
