Doesn't fly at WROK PALCE.

NO C level twat (hmmm, perhaps I should use another term, since the majority of the C levels here are female) twit can over rule what the CIO decides the rules should be. End of discussion. The owner has her back on that one. "C" levels that do not abide are promoted to a position at another company.

I view the use of WindblowZE as the difference between doing oxy-acetylene welding in a concrete building as compared to doing it in a wood frame structure. All it takes is one spark to bring the building down in flames. Now how many times have we seen WindblowZE go up in flames???

Re: You have a contract of employment,

NO, sorry, I don't. I live in one of those USA "at will" states. Which simply means that if your employer says "Goodbye", then you are out. Unless you are in a sensitive role, most douche bag employers do not want a contract, as it could be used against them. Now, when dealing with a more reputable employer, things may be different.

Note in my comment, I used the term: douche bag employer. for me this has a special connotation - one who is sleazy, underhanded, and cares only on how much they can shaft you. I spoke to my brother who has a douche bag boss. They want him on salary, so they do not have to pay the overtime. A little math will quickly tell if that "pay raise" doesn't amount to a pay cut once you figure in the compulsory overtime.

Try again.

Fatman

Re: Quitting a job

It has been my experience that when you are working for a douche bag employer, and you are leaving to accept another position, you must do the following:

1) hand over any and all keys to the premises,

2) in front of the douche bag, and in the presence of witnesses, force the douche bag to change your password immediately,

3) inform the douche bag that you want your final paychecks sent to your residence,

4) inform the douche bag that they are NOT to contact you for ANY reason, what ever problems they were having are no longer your problem,

5) collect your possessions and leave immediately, and if the relationship is that strained, have a police officer present to insure a peaceful departure.

Then be very glad to be rid of those douche bags. Refuse to help in any way former colleagues from that place. You do not know if you are being "set up". The fact that you left under adverse conditions is fair warning that they can not be trusted. Lastly, do not bother with "exit interviews", they don't give a fuck as to why you left, and they are probably looking for some excuse to disparage you.

You know that is the real reason behind the DOJ's clumsy raid on Megaupload.

Shit, it doesn't take a fucking rocket scientist to see that if artists could completely bypass the pigs at the trough the record labels; and sell directly to consumers, who the fuck needs the labels any more???? What value do they add to the equation??? I can easily see what they subtract from the equation. Talk about a monumental shift in the game. But, the fucking labels, run by the dinosaurs that can not appreciate new technologies, are facing being left behind.

What to do with 110,000 Magstar tapes and 11PB of data

Fatman

Re: tape media are nearing the end of their working lifespan

Back some years ago, I encountered a reel of acetate based magnetic recording tape that probably was made in the 1950's.

That stuff did not even survive being played at a slow speed of 3-3/4 inches per second.

The binder was so badly dried out that the oxide coating literally flaked off on the playback head. The transport deck was just coated with oxide. Fortunately, this particular reel did not contain anything of importance; but it made it clear that any attempt to recover material stored on other tapes must be done by people skilled in the art.

The motion picture industry has the same problems with old film masters.

US appeal dismissed in Dotcom case

Fatman

Re: Interesting...disclosures...

I would suggest that the MAFIAA leadership is probably shitting bricks over that requirement.

Ponder this possibility:

The MAFIAA, unable to use civil courts and remedies to smack down Megaupload, convinces the US DOJ, to engage in this clumsy operation solely for the purpose of smacking Megaupload down. There is documentary evidence to that effect, and now, according to the NZ courts, must be disclosed. Now what the fuck does the MAFIAA do? If this documentation does get released, it could result in a shit storm for the MAFIAA; while if it doesn't, then the NZ courts are not likely to play ball.

Here is the interesting aspect, if the docs get released, and the suspected smoking gun is found; would the MAFIAA members face the possibility of civil suits from DotCom. The prospect of seeing varied MAFIAA leaders (metaphorically speaking) hung by the balls in public, is just too delicious.

BTW, is `hangthembytheballs.com` available???

Fatman

Re: Good

From the article:

As noted by NZ’s LawGeekNZ blog, the disclosure would cover communications between US authorities and the MPAA and RIAA on behalf of copyright owners..

That alone would make for some interesting, and potentially embarrassing reading. Could it be that the MAFIAA doesn't want the rest of the world to know that they `own` the US Government.

YouTube video has NOT killed radio's star

Fatman

Re: radio sucks

In the 1970's I had considered getting into radio, and quickly dismissed that idea as misguided.

I quickly found out all about having to kiss the asses of advertisers, and why, commercial radio is incapable of anything better than Top 40.

It was pointed out to me that commercial radio is a business that exists solely for the purpose of serving up an audience to advertisers. Any deviation from the "approved" Top 40 hitshit list would be grounds for termination. Consequently, commercial radio, is incapable of innovation.

I was fortunate to find that in my area was a non commercial station, where the hosts were given the freedom to pick what music genre they wanted to explore, and the depth to which they could explore it.

I remember speaking to my uncle about this "experiment", and as a commercial broadcaster, he said it would never work. Funny, they have been on the air for over 30 years. I wonder if the AM station he worked for is still around?

3) a lesbian?

Get creative.

Arrange for a generator accident. (i.e. NEVER manually switch the power to the generator from the utility; with the front of the transfer switch OPEN.)

Arrange for him to perform an elevator inspection (I believe you Brits call it a 'lift'?); with a faulty upper limit switch. He will experience how it feels to have his head jammed between the top of the cab and the top of the shaft. If that can't be done, and you are in one of those old building with a motor-generator set for the elevator power, then tell him to check the belt tension. Pray that his tie gets yanked into the pulley grooves.

Arrange for the fool to perform a test of the Halon system. And make sure that the doors close quickly, so he gets trapped inside.

Tell him that there is some water trapped in the refrigerant lines between the air handler and the outside compressor. Hand him a hacksaw, and tell him that he needs to cut a slot in the copper tubing to let the water out.

I mean, shit, get creative; and rid yourself of such a clusterfuck mangler.

Her reply was:

I'd do a "Ballmer" and make damn sure his ass was in the chair as it sailed out of the top (fifth) floor window. I would make sure that his employment contact had a clause in it that would allow me to get rid of him without severance pay or benefit in the event of such a serious clusterfuck.

Re: ...many still think that IT is an optional extra

And it is these Luddites that often cause so dammed many problems for IT because they fail to understand how IT impacts their business.

Imagine a wholesale distributor who (IMHO, stupidly) migrates core billing services to a `cloud provider`, and has to deal with the aftermath of the cloud provider fucking up. Can you say insolvency??

Yet there are those members of damagement who only look at the spreadsheet, and see the line item cost for IT, and think: "We have to cut that, or else we won't get our quarterly bonus". I have seen it happen. My employer bought up such a company, and the first thing we did was to kick the asses of the entire `C` level suite out the door. The morale there was in the pits, as the employees did not give a shit about damagement, because damagement did not give a shit about anyone else but themselves.

One of the first questions we were posed with was: "What is going to happen to the remaining IT staff"? A lot of jangled nerves were soothed when they were told that the cloud was being ditched, and the outsourced IT functions were being brought back in house.

"Cloud??? We don't do stupid shit like that for core billing services." We don't want to put a core business function in the hands of a third party, whose only risk is having to refund a portion of your monthly bill for failure to live up to its SLA; while for the business, the risk has no limits. Bad proposition, IMHO.
