Libre Office - tick
You say, "or abandon both entirely in favour of something like LibreOffice."
What an excellent suggestion!

You say, "Microsoft confessed yesterday that over 2,000 well-known websites still remained incompatible with Internet Explorer 8"
Shouldn't that be "Microsoft confessed yesterday that Internet Explorer 8 still remains incompatible with over 2,000 well-known websites."?
MS needs to conform with web standards, not vice-versa.
El Reg says, "If you can live with the price, relatively fragile hard drive and Windows then the Samsung NC10 is, without doubt, one of the best netbooks currently available."
I've been running a full install of Ubuntu 8.04 on my terrific NC10 since I got it. And as I bought it - brand new - for £280, fully a 100 quid cheaper than the N120 price you cite, I don't think this over-priced, Windows-only offering from Samsung comes anywhere near the NC10, or the GNU/Linux-toting alternatives from Asus, etc.
Back to the drawing board, Samsung.
Congratulations to John Ozimek on a temperate, thoughtful and shapely piece of journalism. A joy to read, and full of good sense. We need this sort of intelligent writing, when so much written and broadcast journalism is currently playing to the gallery, and getting dangerously overheated.
Educating kids in schools that use only proprietary software will prevent many talented young people from really understanding IT. Schools should give children and young people access to software that they can study, investigate, modify and improve. GNU/Linux is really their (and our) only hope - it makes early educational experience with real systems possible.

"The huge task of developing driver updates to accommodate the many changes in the Vista operating system and the extensive testing required, including the lengthy Vista certification requirements for audio, makes it very difficult for Creative to develop updates for all past products."
Mmm... Clearly the business model is creaking! Does this mean they are going to GPL3 their drivers, and let the community help??? They might even recommend to M$ that it should GPL Vista!

Mmm... does this mean they are going to adopt FOSS methods, and GPL their drivers???
