Open-source hardware group puts out vid system-on-a-chip

Shades

If you're running...

... a PC with enough oomph to run Win7 then you sure as hell should be able to get WinAmp+Milkdrop to do damn-near-as-realtime-as-makes-no-difference visuals! My XP Netbook has no problems DJing with video (thats two AVI video's playing at the same time!) with a USB hardware controller/soundcard... and of course, DJing with them it HAS to be realtime (well, a buffer of less than 25ms). I suggest you need to check your buffer settings.

That's odd...

... I'm pretty sure my Atom based NC10 Netbook is currently rendering a complex comp in After Effects while I'm listening to MP3s and typing this. Yes, I know its not as fast as a full blown desktop, I knew that when I got it, but its massively convenient and literally goes every I go.

The NC10 is also not below some pretty heavy online sessions of (the admittedly old, but still very much active) Unreal Tournament with everything turned up full and with TeamSpeak running... even when tethered wirelessly to my phone!

My netbook has even been used to DJ with in nightclubs/bars, with a hardware controller, controlling intelligent lighting rigs and providing video for the clubs/bars screens... sometimes all remotely controlled via VNC on my phone, great for when nature calls or you want a drink.

So what were you saying about the Atom?

I'm willing to bet the only Netbooks you've used are ones loaded with shedloads of cruft, dragging them down to the point of uselessness! I know someone with another Samsung netbook who has a ridiculous amount of unnecessary "helper" services running in the system tray and an (IE) browser window literally half filled with dodgy toolbar addons. You can imagine what the rest of the machine was like... I gave up trying to advise the owner of that particular machine!

Are you mad?

The Chrysler Magnum (or 300c as its called in Blighty) is a fantastic looking car. It may not be the best handling car in the world and it may be a big ol' lump, but, styled right, it looks completely badass. And the noise from the Hemi V8 version... wow!

I have to say I like the high/rising shoulder line and squished windows look, and its STILL very much in vogue... the latest Renault Megane (especially the lowered GT version which emphasises the high/rishing shoulder line) and the new VW Scirocco which, again styled right, is a beautiful machine.

Murdoch muscles BBC out of Formula One driving seat

Shades

Really?

BBC4 is a massive drain on the "Unique way the BBC is funded" and for what? Take for instance the week of the Canadian GP: The F1 race (alone) pulled 6.6m viewers, the ENTIRE TOP 10 of BBC4s programmes for that same week pulled in 3.2m viewers! BBC4s annual budget is £55.3m and their average weekly viewing figure is around 8m people.

And last time I skipped past BBC4 some dreary bloke was talking about a road in the middle of no-where having "lost its confidence" and how it unceremoniously ends before its final destination because another road merges with it. Okay, I admit I watched a few minutes of it but only to make sure I wasn't imagining such tripe having been "Uniquely funded"!

On this occasion...

...I was actually referring to Samsungs apparent borrowing of the tiles "look" from Windows Phone 7, rather than its physical appearance. Which is what lead me to say Apple might just have a point about Samsung and their photocopier.

I'm beginning to think, and I never thought I'd say this, that Apple just might have a point about Samsung being a bit too fast and loose with the ol' photocopier if that picture is anything to go by.

I'd rather have VMs idea of "up to"

VM have always used "up to" when referring to their fibre broadband offerings. However, as I've argued before, I guess VM use "up to" to cover their own butts in case of technical issues and such like, but at least they are generally in the right ball park pretty much most of the time.

On the other hand I have a friend* who pays BT for their >20Mb< service (because thats the smallest package they do), even though BT themselves, on their own website, acknowledge she can only theoretically receive a maximum of 15Mb, and even then, on a good day, she only gets between 6 and 11Mb.

I've got news for all of you...

...Its been available for Windows Mobile for at least the last 3 seasons, that I know of, with the exact same look and feel.

Its also been available for many other phones (even "dumb" phones) for the same amount of time, which is not surprising as it is, with the exception of the iOS version, actually a JAVA app.

Oddly the developers dropped the version for the HTC HD2 this season yet retained versions for other Windows Mobile devices. Bastards! Online Java version it is for me now... Thank god for Wi-Fi and mobile tethering!

I find...

...that as of late Samsung seem to be getting their EPG layout and menu systems pretty much spot on. Yes, there are still an few odd quirks but overall they're pretty good and quite attractive. I was also quite surprised by the amount of video formats one of their TVs would play from USB (HD MKV, MP4, AVI, DIVX, FLV and even 3GP!). The TV itself was one of their cheaper 40" models but I was very impressed with the features and thought that had gone into it for its price range.

Anyhoo, does this device support AnyNet+? I was also pleasantly surprised when the Samsung TV usurped command and control of a Panasonic Blu-Ray player over HDMI, dispensing the need for multiple remotes. Having never previously heard of AnyNet+ I think its a fantastic feature and certainly one that I'll be looking out for with any kit in the future, but it NEVER gets mentioned in ANY reviews here on El Reg or anywhere else for that matter.

Oh, and is 80% the new black here at El Reg? ;)
