Beastie Boys settle with toy maker over Girls copyright dispute

asdf

>Creativity declining? one of your band members dead? no need to worry, just sue everyone off the face of the earth.

Yeah too bad the surviving members of the band have made more off royalties this year than you will make in your entire life probably. The last thing they need is cash as evidenced by the fact they refuse to allow their music in commercials. Besides as the article shows they didn't sue they countersued and won.

Re: @Busby

Just to clarify something for the UK readers who maybe haven't been to the US. We (the US public) really aren't as protective of our supposedly national companies such as Apple as say many in Europe are of theirs. Companies like Apple outsource most of their business anyway. The North American market is fairly open and our nationalism seems to rarely extend to our corporate masters. I have heard the same argument made about the Xbox (last generation) and I think it has a lot less to do with nationalism and more to do with better marketing in the market. We also quit buying American when it largely became impossible to do so anymore for most things (you can still get plenty of American made financial derivatives but I digress). The only time really nationalism comes up with brands is with some obvious Chinese brands for geopolitical reasons. This also speaks to how poorly Chinese branding still is as much as American jingoism.

GRAV WAVE TSUNAMI boffinry BONANZA – the aftershock of the universe's Big Bang

asdf

Re: "detected"

Yep this would seem to be more indirect evidence of gravity waves (which we have plenty) but I guess measuring a change in the CMB is as good as measuring a change in matter to some. Also it is largely confirming the Big Bang which is pretty much been accepted for quite some time now. Its good to make it official and to add more evidence but a breakthrough (except perhaps for the neat measuring technology) is a bridge too far imho.

Roku flashes $50 HDMI TV web dongle at anyone sick of Google's stick

asdf

>The thing about the Chromecast dongle is that there will be apps for it, there's Plex for Chromecast already

FYI not to shill for Roku but they have a Plex channel along with like 1000+ other channels (with Roku think channels instead of apps but basically the same thing). Although admittedly most people will probably use single digit channels/apps regularly.

asdf

Good points. Being as antisocial as I am though I tend to watch the vast majority of my movies at my own house or else I go to the theaters lol.

asdf

Re: Doh figures

Yep long live internet TV even if the media studios hate it.

asdf

>Not sure why you wouldn't have your phone/tablet to hand in your own house.

Was thinking more of Grandma who might not have either in the house (though even that is changing these days). As for the dongle at someone else's house hopefully they have a guest network or else you have to futz with wifi passwords. I agree in general though the dongle is a cool idea and the cost alone is why I went with the Chromecast. I do think in a family setting with multi TVs it is great for all but the primary TV. Perhaps its just me being a typical American and having to have the traditional remote instead of a phone. Also Roku having its own interface and channels makes it perhaps more friendly than having to have an app on your phone for each channel. Roku also allows you to search all channels for what you are looking for. Like I said I like both and think they complement each other well.

asdf

Re: Local content?

>On my Roku 1 you can do local streaming with the Allcast Android app or with the Twonky Beam channel (is pretty flaky though). I believe that is true for this dongle as well.

What I meant to say is Twonky is a bit flaky but Allcast works right out of box no problems. I did some more research at home and found these two are great for playing media off an phone or tablet but if you just want to play stuff off a dlna compliant server than the way to go with Roku 1 (and probably this dongle as well) is with the Roku Media Player channel in the channel store. Its free. Basically install on your Roku and with no fuss it will play your movies, songs, images, etc no problems.

asdf

Doh figures

Recently (last few weeks) bought a Roku 1 when I cut the cord (triple digit cable bills fug that) and would have probably held out for this just for the dual band capability. Oh well waiting until April probably wouldn't have been an option. Once again instead of being on the bleeding edge I tend to be on the dumbass edge where I buy products a few weeks before the next big thing comes out.

asdf

The remote alone will make it worth the extra $15 for many people. Not everyone always carries their smart phone or keeps a tablet always charged and around (which you need to start playing netflix/hulu etc movies on the Chromecast unless you cast through Chrome Browser on a computer). I own a Roku 1 and a Chromecast and think they do compliment each other well on separate tvs in the same house.

asdf

Re: Local content?

On my Roku 1 you can do local streaming with the Allcast Android app or with the Twonky Beam channel (is pretty flaky though). I believe that is true for this dongle as well.

NASA could have averted near DROWNING TERROR in SPACE

asdf

Re: Luca Parmitano's calm demeanour in a terrifying situation

Yep they can be pretty picky about who they send into space and people who panic tend not to make the cut I assume. I heard an interview where an astronaut says the way they think in space is constantly asking themselves what's the next thing that can kill me and how do I deal with it now. He also said they test if you are claustrophobic by zipping you up in a little ball thing without telling you how long you will be in there and leaving you in there for awhile. I imagine claustrophobia is one thing an astronaut can never have.

I guess the one advantage to most Americans staying in America is they don't have to deal with this. You can drive 3000 miles and still be on the same network (unless your on a GSM network like T-Mobile or AT&T and then you do have to watch roaming). Yes yes I know the disadvantages quite well and am glad I spent time working in Europe (seeing in many ways how backwards some things we do/have) but damn is it nice to be home.

http://ec.europa.eu/justice/data-protection/

JDX once again show how many Americans think only their laws apply and their culture matters (Disclosure: am born and bred Merkin). Not every country out there only lets corporations make the laws. The EU has some serious data privacy laws which US companies tend to really hate because they cost money to implement.

asdf

The markets not really arguing. Many people don't want to pay be forced to pay $100 more for a device that makes them wave their arms around like they are pitching a fit when they just want to game. Apple pushes back release date for 'dustbin chic' Mac Pro

asdf

>Ok, I'll bite. What kind of major legal action are you opening yourself up to, and why?

You are breaking the EULA on Mac OS by running the software on non Apple hardware. As mentioned above yes this a real grey area and may not hold up in court in many jurisdictions for users. However Apple has been quite successful going after companies that tried to sell Hackintoshes like Psystar. Personally I probably wouldn't bet my business on a Hackintosh even with legal uncertainty aside. Also personally I think Apple are bunch of wankers on this and I am tired of their crap software so am running Mint Linux on my home Mac Pro (windoze at work for me unfortunately).

This link discusses.

>Then Hackintosh. There are some bonkers crazy Hackintoshs running well over Pro spec's for well under Pro money. All you sacrifice is the nice looking case and if you choose a non-intel board dubious thunderport.

Which is fine until you actually use it for commercial work (using Mac OS X) and open yourself up for some major legal action.

Re: hmm

Granted I am far from some economics professor but long term liquidity matters especially for a currency I would assume. This really seems to be a reoccuring Achilles heel for BitCoin.

asdf

hmm

What would worry me if I actually owned any BitCoins is not this exchange implementation issue per say but the fact that it caused the currency to fall more than %20 in a just a few hours. First world currencies don't do this. The volatility is hurting BitCoin probably more than anything else right now. Having to check the exchange rate minute by minute to keep from getting screwed is not something most merchants and people want to deal with.

asdf

Re: This t-mo CEO is rude and unprofessional

Of course once voice over LTE becomes commonly available in the US then Verizon will be GSMy as well. That will be nice especially when the handsets that can do LTE well without heating up and burning down the battery are cheap on Ebay lol.

asdf

Re: This t-mo CEO is rude and unprofessional

Yes yes I have heard it all before about GSM being equal but the fact is at work I get four bars from Verizon's network (long live resellers so I don't have to sign Verizon contract and pay their ridiculous fees) but when I tried to go with either AT&T or T-Mobile I would go hours without being able to even send SMSs. I also work in the middle of metro area of millions of people near a very large university so its not like I am in BFE Oklahoma or something. GSM from a customer standpoint is inherently better as you are not tied to the carrier necessarily (plus phones from Google directly only come in GSM) and I loved it when I lived in Europe but it works much better in densely populated areas. The American west is all spread out to hell (even the large cities are very very spread out by western Europe standards) and it requires a lot more GSM base stations for the same coverage quality.

asdf

Re: This t-mo CEO is rude and unprofessional

Yeah if GSM coverage wasn't garbage (especially indoors) in my city (and from my experience many other cities in the western US away at least away from the coast) I would be a t-mo customer as well.
