Facebook T&Cs vote falls 299.5 million short of quorum

Fancy a laugh...

... check out the nigh on 90,000 FB users all posting the same brainless statement on this Governance page http://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-site-governance/responding-to-your-feedback/10152321231735301

There's one good reason to stay away from the low intelligence sheep attractor that is Facebook.

Re: Google worries me

If the threat is that they will use that data to corner and assassinate you, then yes they are a threat. If it's using that data to build a marketable profile of you as an individual to push more adverts your way and sell that data to other businesses for the sake of free services on the internet then probably not so much. Although I would keep an eye on what Google is tracking and maybe have a clean-up once in awhile using the dashboard.

Apple shares take biggest one-day hammering in 4 years

Rob

More likely...

... the drop is reflecting that the market/investors probably don't have confidence in the current management structure and the current CE.

Apple products still get made and still get sold, Android market share has been higher than Apple's in the phone biz for awhile now so I doubt it has anything to do with that. Windows Phone 8 still hasn't proved to be a threat (yet?) so I doubt competition is that much of a driving factor for the ever so minor drop.

I don't know the building that well...

... but doesn't it have a roof, most buildings with four walls that are being used tend to have a roof, I would assume it probably has a flat roof as well being in a very built up area.

Or is he that paranoid that a sniper might take him out or snatched by a helicopter.

Everything aside, guilty or not, this boils down to the guy just being a plain twat.

After moving house a couple of months back we been quite ruthless at clearing out stuff. I finally decided to bite the bullet and get rid of all my old Windows smartphones going right back to the Orange SPV.

Packaged up 7 of them to Asda Tech recycle and got £20 in total for a few of them. The only phone I kept was the old breeze block phone circa 1992 with a rubber aerial so big you could whip someone with it.

Re: Contempt

I'm not sure if it's different from court to court and maybe partly dependant on the court staff, but everything you said is exactly what I expected when I did my service. But thanks to the Court staff it actually turned out to be a very comfortable experience. The chap running the jurors was a funny guy and very reasonable, he cut the self employed folk a lot more slack and seemed to consider all jurors employment situations.

It definitely didn't end up being like the experience I imagined it would be from reading the documentation sent through, but as I mentioned earlier does it vary from court to court.

Android users: More of them than fanbois, but they don't use the web

Rob

Re: Apps vs Browser?

I'm glad someone mentioned it.

All of these stats talk about browsers. I do a lot of surfing on my Android phone and tablet, but when it comes to shopping, like most customers I have a few stores that I use on a regular basis as I know they will provide what I want at a price I'm comfortable with. Those regular shop brands all have an app and I do my purchases through them.

El Reg, do you collect stats on which devices use your app? When I'm at work I use the browser for this site, if I'm out and about or at home I use the app.

Pirate cops bust LITTLE GIRL, take her Winnie-the-Pooh laptop

Rob
FAIL

Re: Sad

As stated in the article, she was searching for the song and stumbling across the Pirate Bay whilst using her Pooh laptop, she probably doesn't have a clue what Bittorrent is or even what a bittorrent client is, hence the failure to get a copy of the tune.

There are some clues which help paint a picture here, she was 9yrs old with a Winnie the Pooh Laptop and was downloading some pop artist popular with young girls, this doesn't smack of a serial copyright infringing pirate (although in this day an age all of that could be completely wrong).

Please let there be an international out pour of disgust at the Finnish Police and their copyright mafia.

Apple to settle with Samsung? Korean honcho: 'Fuggedaboutit'

Rob

Re: 'I reckon Samsung are in a much riskier position than Apple.'

They might not have a Samsung cloud service but they are very friendly with Dropbox for their Galaxy range of phones as my free 50GB of space after getting a new phone is testament too. And there lies another issue with cloud services, there are too many being offered now. I have the opportunity for 5 other accounts with other providers of tech kit, it's now getting to the point where I don't want to sign in too multiple cloud services for a bunch of my fragmented content, which is where it will lead too.

As it is I use Dropbox for my media content (seeing as I have so much space now) and Google drive for my documents/paperwork, they have specific jobs and having only 2 works well for me.

Rob

Re: 'I reckon Samsung are in a much riskier position than Apple.'

I wouldn't say it's a definite NO, Samsung do have a strategy, not very pronounced mind, but it is there. In their media equipment they embed their AllShare tech which when you sell a product to an average Joe on the street who would like to share their phone content on the big HD TV or pump out some tunes via your home entertainment equipment the AllShare tech is a USP that could quite easily foster some loyalty. Ironically that's a bit similar to Apple as well, with their proprietary formats and protocols that allows iOS to easily share between other iOS devices and you can't say that hasn't helped towards Apple customer loyalty.

Now crank that up a notch and embed a similar vein in your fridge and washing machine and you have a Samsung built app that tells you your running low on a certain fridge item or the washing machine has finished don't forget to empty it. Granted they aren't there yet but I bet it's on the roadmap and that sort of home tech will definitely foster brand loyalty.

EE 4G LTE review

Rob
FAIL

Lots more problems afoot

I went into one of the new re-branded T-Mobile shops yesterday and it was complete chaos, none of the staff seemed to have been briefed properly about EE's offerings and they were pulling staff from their Orange shop to help out, who also didn't have a clue what was going on. I did feel for them as it looks and feels like EE have rolled out this new brand with hardly any organisation or training for staff.

They also seem to be changing offers last minute. Before the launch they had on their website an offer of reduced tariffs for T-Mob and Orange customers which is why I went to sign up to EE in the first place as it was a good offer and slightly better than my current tariff, that's gone though and the best they can offer existing customers is 25% of your remaining contract price to switch to EE. Shame as I'm now thinking of jumping ship and getting a standard 3G tariff and a non LTE phone at a much more reasonable price.

Even as an early adopter there isn't enough in terms of price or LTE reliability to make me want to adopt early. Such a good head start on the competition but they seem to have dropped the ball.

Facebook's stock rally may be shortlived: Small advertisers enraged

Re: Distributed networks...

Eventually though it all comes back to money, they will start off free but eventually overheads for running them will need to be paid and as soon as they start looking at business models the whole thing starts to degrade. There are certain types of content that need to be paid for one way or the other and a lot of businesses are starting to realise it, unfortunately users aren't.

Why is 4G so expensive? Answer: The Post-Voice Era is coming

Rob

Because...

... that's the company that now owns all the infrastructure. Orange and T-Mobile are just sub-brands now which will eventually be wound down as they move their customer base over to EE (granted it will take them a number of years).

Everything Everywhere prices up UK 4G

Rob

Re: ouch

Those prices quoted are for new users, if you are already a T-Mob or Orange customer you can transfer over with your 4G phone and get 1GB allowance for £26 a month. I'm due an upgrade on T-Mob at the end of the month so going to get the Note II LTE and then transfer across giving me a better package than I currently have on T-Mob. Obviously an effort to get all their customers off Orange and T-Mob brand so they can wind them down.
