Re: Moan, moan, moan
People are not moaning about the VPN - they're moaning because this ad is disguised as NEWS!
If El Reg stated it was an ad, or even pushed as a "Hey guys, heres a service you might try for X, Y and Z reasons". Then they would be getting a pat on the back, not nagging readers... but the problem is they don't
Lets do the time warp AGAIN....
How the f*ck is this news? this article stinks of "sponsored news" (aka paid advertisement).. must be the 5th or 6th occurance in the past week.
Keep this up... then watch all your long-term loyal readers gradually dwindle away.
HP are always behind the curve on this.
I'm in the market for some new arrays, budget is not such a concern, and I've evaluated the Dell EQL, HP Left Hand and EMC VNX. We've decided to run with the VNX simple because of the functionality it offers such as the SSD Caching and Tiering.. Dell offer tiering on their high end EQL, but AFAIK HP have no such functionality for arrays in this price bracket.
Quick quick... Clouds not your bag, but get a load of this Big Data...
Another overhyped fad that is being shovelled down business leaders throats.
El Reg - News might be slow, but please stop publishing these "press release" ad's, or at least create a new corner of the site, I'd personally recommend "Odds and Sods -> Drivel"
Given the current trends of Windows releases i.e. Success and Flop, Windows 9 will be f*cking awesome!
Roll on 2014!
42k IOPS and 52k IOPS...
I just don't believe these types of stats anymore!
EMC tell me each SSD drive in my nice new shiny VNX 5300 does approx 3000 IOPs? How can a £150 consumer drive outperform a drive that EMC charge £1000 (guestimate) for..
Pfffttt .. should have built their Data Centre's in the UK, at least the weather is predictable...
Monday - Rain
Tuesday - Rain
Saturday - Rain..
Its all a ruse to prepare for the 2nd coming..
Its all a ruse so that Billy Gates can do a "Steve Jobs's" and have a 2nd coming, he'll return as the saviour of in 2014..
Looking into my Crystal ball, I see that Windows 8 is going to flop, Sinofsky will be thrown to the wolves as the architect of the failure. Ballmer will go shortly after. Billy will state "he feels people frustration and pain, and promise to fix the mistakes", Windows 9 will then be released and praised as the true successor to Windows 7 (As Windows 7 is to XP).
Windows requires an update, 1000 updates to apply... click Here to proceed.. Time left, 15 days, 7 hours and 25 minutes!
They honestly expect companies to ditch XP when they have essentially told the "Sys Admin's" who make the decisions to go f*ck themselves... FAIL!
Long "working" hours, unhealthy conditions, disgusting dorms
Sounds like a Butlin's holiday camp to me..
The movie business is shrinking
Duh! WTF do you expect when it costs £30 to take me and my partner to see a film - Thats twice as much as it cost 10 years ago..
Pico-projectors ..... haven't caught on in any measurable way.
Thats because the resolutions suck.. give me something that does 720p for less than £200 and I'll by it!
I recently got a smallish projector from China, 720p cost about £140.. bargain :)
You sir are a whinge bag!
If you want to use your own device, do your own f*cking research on how to secure it, then demonstrate to me its sufficient... Chances are your company supplies adequate hardware for you to do your job in a productive secure manner, just because your a FANBOI, doesn't give you the right to scream and stomp.
WAHHHH WAAHHHHH WAHHH BABY WANTS HIS IPHONE!!
Field of dreams
Build it yourself, and they will surely come... Get a case with Hotswap drives, 6TB (4x1.5TB), 16Gb RAM, i3 CPU.. for the marvellous price of £300-£350. Take your pick of OS, personally I went for ESX then slapped on a couple of VMs, but you could just as easily go for FreeNAS etc.
If you don't want to get your hands dirty, buy yourself a HP MicroServer for £150..
Its about centralisation and easier management, if you have a large Virtualised enviroment with 50+ Switches from various manufacturers, it means you can manage and make changes from 1 central location. At present you may to add a new global VLAN you many need to log into each and every switch individual which could take hours..With things like OpenFlow, such a change can be made within seconds..
Was this a press release that you just republished... it reminds of
1) SaaS wouild put all IT Departments out of work
2) Virtualisation would lead to mass lay offs because servers would be so consolidated
3) Cloud would remove the need for businesses to have their own servers
4) Tape was dead and D2D would rule the world
Do you honestly believe this drivel? Please if you want to print it, at least put some reality into it!
Not being a storage expert
I do wonder what the difference between these guys and the Hybrid SAN's offered by existing "Tier 1" vendors..
All I know is they cost about 2x more, I'm currently in the process of purchasing an EMC VNX5300 with 2TB SSD and 12TB 10k SAS with all the FastCache and FastTier features for about £28k.. When I enquired with these vendors, they wanted closer to £50k.
So do we get 2 years in the UK?
I always thought we got 12 months warranty on electronic products...
MILF... that is all!
You also found 1 in a xmas cracker?
"Obstacles preventing biz customers "
Is that the CEO and Compliance position?
Now please get HP ask the IT Teams who would have to manage it.. you can then add
As the person who controls the IT purse..
Unless they drop be £450, or they become more innovative with the displays etc..
Can't see this working..
IBM just does not cut the mustard when it comes to features - their support will be 10x better than Amazon, but bang for buck, they just don't have the product for it!
Smart chip for "dishwashers"
Great description, stop the girls getting suspicious... now does it also make them perform over favours?
Sponsors should be made to prove proof of concept..
Hence his parachute should be be replaced with a can of Redbull, after all it does give you wings..
It's an attack against what we stand for, for free elections.
Calm down dear.... its only a penguin!

Re: Stop perpetuating myths...DELL - Fine but come clean on your costs..
I won't dispute what you say regarding performance.
But they are way over priced, I approached nimble and told them my budget and basically got laughed at, so I phoned Dell, who sold me a PS6100XS for £26k.. if your unfamiliar with this box, it has 7x400Gb SSD and 17x600Gb 10K SAS HDD... so I got the Daddy of the EqualLogic for half the price Nimble and Tintri wanted for their entry level boxes..
Re: Sir - That is BULLSH*T
This is crap!
I recently brought a £250k house with a £12k deposit..
Some banks will offer a mortgage with 5% deposit, on top of that there are literally dozens and dozens of schemes to help first time buyers. Either government backed, or actually assistance provided by the housing developers.
Umm wheres the IT Angle?
Have they also found some ancient alien computing technology? Was the mosaic printer on some early Dot-Matrix printer?..
Give it a few weeks, somebody over at XDA will hack RT to run on the Transformer hardware...
