UK.gov eyes up virtual currencies, fingers red tape dispenser

Instead of seeking new things to regulate...

maybe they should first stick to actually regulating the financial sector we already have, and then when they have show competency at doing 'their job', then they can go on to f@#% up something that appears to work completely well without them..

MPs: Ancient UK Border Force systems let GANGSTERS into Blighty

ooFie
FAIL

With HollyHopDrive on this..

It'll be nothing but a money spending exercise which will fail in almost every conceivable way.. except in the realm of filling someone's pockets down the golf course.

I'm not sure I want the government shoring up our borders, when the national debt gets to the point of making the pound worthless then we might need to get out, and there's enough pointless red tape in the way already.

Just out of interest..

Have we had any more information on the Steambox by any chance?

Just thinking if M$ is draconian as it sounds and $ony fail to wow the disenchanted xbox masses not willing to put up with M$ all new licencing screw, might be the opening Valve or others may need to get a good foot hold..

Yeah.. I'm kind of with you on this..

Firstly I dont know what all the fuss is about the name, honestly people are just going to call it 'xbox' anyway I dont know anyone who currently referes to as a 360..

And all the additonal functions, M$ you dont seem to realise your trying to compete with my Smart-TV.

You need a TV to provide the functions, and my tv provides most of the stuff without having to turn on yet another box..

Kinect - nope dont want one, not sure why it needs it. and the fact its always on...

[M$] but we give you options to turn it disable the features

[ME] So I could just unplug it if need be..

[M$] No, the xbox wont work if you do

[ME] Why? Why does it even 'NEED' it in?

[M$] er.. because..

[ME] Looking forward to the first bit of hacker tech then to tell the system its there then aint I.

Yeah and the requires internet access, okay technically not 'Always Online' but if it REQUIRES it then it may of well be, so looking at throwing away about a 3rd of you customer base already M$ (but we need to see what this 'requirement' is, they cant be that dumb..can they?)

Then there the installs too hdd, but then the game is tied to the account and if someone sells/borrows the disk then a fee has to be paid.. er what?

Am begining to think M$ have lost the plot, at least a third of their customers are children who buy games 'second hand' what the hell to they think this will do to that market?! But frankly I think that is the point.

They want to treat their customers that corporate entites where we have to pay licences for everything.. sorry M$ the real world isnt like that.. And if this is what your aiming for.. then why are you even selling disks? especially since we dont need them to play the games? surely you could provide downloads for your 'may-as-well-be always online' machines and provide the games at a 3rd of the price since the overhead would be tiny?

It appears M$ is trying to pull alot of stuff people really dont want, but slip it under the radar and they need to be pulled up about it, rather than skip over it like in the vast majority of the reviews I've read so far..

okay rant over, I'll get my jacket..

Microsoft Xbox gaffe reveals cloudy arrogance

ooFie
Coat

One thing you could do to help send a message..

A lot of people have simply suggested that you dont buy the game which has DRM on it.

And thats fair enough, but what if its a game you do want to play.

Well publishers generally are only really intrested in the first two weeks of sales to give them some sort of indication of how well the game is going to sell (and hence how much money they are going to make).

So simply dont buy the game on release, wait two weeks.. frankly if simcity and other examples are to go by your not really going to be able to play YOUR game anyway.

So you can still support your delevolpers while telling the publishers to stick it (also helps if you bitch & whine like a 5 year old on the games forums in the meantime - plenty of examples in this post :p )

then get to play your game anyway..

*\. okay getting my coat, no need to shove me out the door..

Apple shares take biggest one-day hammering in 4 years

ooFie
Mushroom

Re: Very poor analysis.

"Apple shares peaked in late September and have been on the way down since, baring some volatility on the way.

If that had anything to do with the company's performance.."

In this case its to do with business model.

"then why does the plot for Google shares have pretty much the same shape??"

Its a Bear Market, lots of things are going to 'look' the same, however a bit of a differece between a 2% drop & a 7%

"Indeed, even the gold spot price has been on the wane since then."

Yeah you may want to speak to the lads over at GATA about that one.

"There is a reason…"

Quantitative Easing or QE? - the massive amount of tax payer backed money lent to gamblers er.. sorry banks at 0% interest so they could go out and buy buy buy with no risk to themselfs to help pump up the stock markets of the world while at the same time cause inflation.

"All these asset classes are "safe haven" instruments and with the financials in doubt since 2008 thanks to the crisis and now sovereigns in crisis thanks to the financials these "blue chip asset parks" have been more important than ever."

When has any stock ever been refered to as a Safe Haven?

Safe Haven are normally Gold & other precious metals, and the Guilts & Bonds of nations who generally have sound money management (Switzerland, US etc [you at the back stop laughing]), And the system being what it is these Bond markets are now at historic highs, shouldnt be long till we start to see some of these babies pop.

"So why the big sell-off now you may ask?"

Well turn downs after QE is frankly common, it wont be long till one or more governments decide they need to do something to 'help the markets'

"Something wicked this way comes."

More QE, more Inflation.. rejoice peasants the end is nigh!

I find that reading investors & analysts blogs more helpful in understanding why a share price is falling that on a technology site... just saying!

Don't touch Sony, Panasonic's junk, says credit agency

Coat

"No, which is why junk-level mortgages re-packaged by banks were rated as AAA by ratings agencies... one of the big factors leading to the original meltdown. Of course the ratings agencies do not take responsability for this"

The Banks themselves & the Government Oversight Agencies didnt take any either, so why would you expect the Credit Agencies to be different swimming in this sea of corruption?

And as bad as some of these multi-nationals maybe, just about every country in the world is in a much much worse place, these companies are just a symptom of a major issue that no one is addressing (say they are, but in reality arent)

as AC points out this aint over yet!

Lancs shale to yield '15 years' of gas for UK

ooFie
Gimp

er..

"and regulatory regime are designed to make cheap fossil fuel innovation much much more expensive than it need be."

Well if you think this is going to be priced down from market value anyway, well enjoy that dream while you can..

And the kicker is that the price is only driven up by futures not by what is being demanded now.

And the futures is driven by 'peak theory' despite the fact that more resources have been found to fill the gap than are currently being tapped. And if we could ever get governments to regulate more energy sources into place (hydrogen) - rather than just taxing everyone not to use the harmful ones we could possibly never get round to using them. But still all fun and games, where the fun on making fun new markets & industry when you can bleed the people dry using the old ones..

Yes, there's a Tech Bubble. But that's OK

ooFie

Bubbles...

Thing about market bubbles... is they NEVER see them coming untill its to late.

If they are talking about bubbles and the industry isnt about to fall around their ears then it probably isnt.

And as for taking a dip.. its a little more serious than a dip!

And thats mainly down the Bubble of all Bubbles called the "U.S Dollar" but hey their going to be printing that into infinity, and just to make sure it works the BOE, BOJ, SNB & ECB (if they can get away with it) will try and do the same but hey the tax-payer pockets are never ending, so what if we're stealing money from ours childrens children, those bankers deserve that money so they can continue to make risks to futher profits - profits which are private, the debt on the other hand is very much a tax-payer issue not theirs!

Nobody has any idea about new pension thing happening

ooFie
Gimp

@Lee

"However, £9k in today's cash would need to be £18k in 20 years time. To achieve that, and starting now, I would need to put away somewhere in the region of £600 per month to meet that, which is an amount I can justify (I already put £600 a month away and I have been paying into various pensions for the last 15 years) - I know my maths don't include any spending money, but I am assuming the reductions in current spending will make up for that, particularly the car running costs"

I like the sound of you Lee you sound like a chap with his head screwed on and sleeves rolled up (which is alot more than I can say about some of my own peers these days)

However you've managed to do fairly well for yourself, However £9k a year is more than most people make in this country, the government has used the figure £7,475 because it believes that is the optimal earnings for the largest population grab without it causing too much uproar.

Now £7,475 / 12 = £622.91 - so £622.91 per month might be enough to have your happy future retirement but they just may just starve before they get there. ;-)

But seriously, rent (which is what most people do) or depending on mortgage rates your looking at between £300 and £450 per month then food heating and travel costs, your average person isnt going to put very much into this at all.

You took in inflation but you didnt put in devaluation, I dont know if you are aware of the race to the bottom at the moment going on in most of the major currencys in the world but if it keeps up at this rate come 20 years from now your notes could have extra zero's on the end of them but yet buy less than a pound coin does now. (your right you can use any figure you like in there but in my opinion your being far to conservative, almost generous in fact)

And most governments around the world are already dipping their fingers into public sector pension funds and moving the figures around, put that together with the fact that most banks only hold 7% of the funds they lend out, then there is a good chance the company you have your pension with will no longer exist by the time you come to collect.

The issue isnt simply with pensions, its the whole entire monetary system that is at fault.

For too long it has rested on Greed and Fraud and its getting to the point where its going to fail (and fail it will because that is the only logical out come) it may not fail this time or the next but each time the problem gets bigger and the results of which become more devastating.

The "pension crises" is just one small area of a much much larger monster, a monster everyone is ignoring because they dare not look under the bed and face it.

For the government go to out and spend before going "sorry! was that yours!?, guess we'll have to raise taxes to get it back" or "ah well though luck! you should of prepared yourself!".

And all the money going in is next to pointless anyway, with the amout of inflation and devaluation at work you'd be lucky to afford to put a roof over your head by the time some of us get to retire (if ever).

Sunspot decline could mean decades of cold UK winters

ooFie

@some begger

Well done.. well done for just repeating what I've already been saying.. bravo!

"The seasons are caused by the axial tilt of the earth: the angle between the plane of our annual orbit around the sun and the axis of our daily rotation of the planet."

"while we're spinning on this little rock and the rocking tilt in which it spins making parts of the planet point a few degrees closer or way from the sun doesnt do anything."

And at what point did I call the "Climate Scientists" fascists.. sounds like your reading what you want to read, Not what I'm actually writing.

I refered to the "Eco-fascists" which is a correct and apt description, zealot would also be another label.

I would suggest reading what they are putting into writing (thats the policy makers (who arent necessarily politicians, rather more political elites who use they money and power to not only twist opinion but help put 'their' policies in place) and well as what drops out of their mouths during interviews. Because if they did care about true green policies, then regulation on large industries would be what they should be purposing. Not taxation on small bussinesses and the individual. And no amount of money should allow anyone to pollute more than anyone else.

I may not believe in "man-made" climate change, but I do believe in climate change, and the best way to safe guard against this. Because the main difference between "man-made" and natural. Is they make you believe it can be solved (through laughable projects) - it cant. Its a natural product of the Earths present around our sun - get used to it.

So it would be more worth while to clean our industries, so they dont pollute our lands and water.

While sorting out other regions of the planet like Africa so they can grow and provide food incase there ever is a shortage. And things like money shouldnt be applied to nations that are starving, there is no reason why any person on this planet should go hungary, and yet through the fraud (and yes that is not only apt but correct) that is our monetary system, millions die.

So you go ahead and support "political bodies" such as the IPCC, just dont be suprised if nothing gets done.

@ Some Begger

Hate to tell you but the 'Consesus' is a fallacy.

Just about anyone who spoke out against or even simply questioned the Sanctification of the doctrine, either lost their job (if lucky) or got not only demonised but ridiculed. Yeah sounds like a good way of getting 'consesus' to me.

"Feel free to believe that there is some global trillion-dollar conspiracy that has somehow managed to corrupt the work of hundreds of scientific institutions and publications over the course of the last forty years. It has as much credibility as a Bush-done-9/11 conspiracy theory."

Yeah nice argument there tosspot look at this and then believe, oh no dont question, dont look at it and say well this is inconclusive this can be taken either way and this out right says the opposite, its enough that its there now believe!!. and if you dont look flying sauces and little green men. heres a tin-foil hat. how dare you question the religon [insert other pathtic insult]

"Is it any wonder there are concerns about our education system if people manage to survive to adulthood while believing that this is why we have summer and winter."

..Right!?...So!... We dont get Summer / Winter due to our position on the Earth.. okay.. I'm sat down.. what man made magic spell is causing us to have seasons then?

Maybe its some fat American who keeps jogging then stopping and all the excess heat is causing the planet to get warm.. throw us a bone we obvisouly need educating here..

Meh

pfh!

@Some Beggar - Er.. no retard! I Believe in Global Climate Change, just that there isnt any real proof to say its man-made, and the people who are saying its man-made have to flip-flop their position ever few decades so "their data" support "their hypothesis".

But lets just use childish words like Denialist instead of seeing it for what it really is a scam.

Instead of just taxing the poor of the world, but hey you live in a western nation shouldnt effect you to much.

@AC "What you'er desribing their to support your "hypothesis" is a variation in the earth. Do you see ?"

Oh really.. glad you pointed that out I may of missed that, I also didnt know that grass is green!

What I was try to point across but obviously fail by the looks of it, is that when we're (on the earth surface) are closer to the sun its warmer and when we're futher away its cold... surely not that hard of a concept to grasp!? So.. when the sun is 'active' it is throwing out MORE heat than when it is 'inactive'.. as indicated by the global warming and cooling of all the inner and some of the out planets of our solar system.

And as for some of these scientist having a vested interests. well some of them do, but I'm more concerned by what the zealot politians do with the information they are paying for.

I suggest you do your own research in this area. Because I dont have anything against being green, I do have issue with it when the powerful of the world use such tools to use as excuses to stand on the back of the poor.

Big Brother

Fingers in ears now...

"However many professional climate scientists do not believe that variations in the Sun have any significant effect on the Earth's climate, and there is intense hostility to the idea from the green movement as it could de-emphasise the importance of human-driven carbon emissions."

Yeah, dont let simple logic stand in the way of a good scam, especially if its tax payer funded.

I alway love when they turn round and say that the sun has nothing to do with global temperatures.

Yeah because while we're spinning on this little rock and the rocking tilt in which it spins making parts of the planet point a few degrees closer or way from the sun doesnt do anything.. you know that whole summer / winter thing would happen anyway!? right?!

As someone pointed out first it was global cooling, for the next what 20 - 30 years it was global warming, and now its global cooling again, who whats to bet that in the next 20 - 30 years we'll be back to global warming again.. you know its almost like something on a cycle is causing this (no not your mother-in-law)..

Well we're just going to have to wait to see what the eco fascists say next to convince us that we need to pay the extra taxes so they can give the money to their friends.. er .. sorry I mean the capitains of eco industry so they can take their cut of the pie while giving it to another bunch of eco scammers in another country because 'they have more trees'?!?. And in return they give us 'credits' (whatever the f@#k that means) usually printed on paper (no they dont see the irony) so those who can afford to, can carry on polluting, while the rest of us who cant get fined.

No no your right it doesnt sound like those with the 'have more' screwing over those will little.

Well just another example..

of people not understanding the word "theory".

Just because you have a "belief" (and yes we all have them) in one theory doesnt make it correct or wrong.

The reason its called a theory is because either the information is unavailable, or contradictory and can not be "proven" one way or another.

But to simply point and laugh is frankly pathetic, because its usually made by people who dont understand the arguement and dont want to understand the arguement.

Mummy, mummy, there's a nuclear monster!

Really.. more of this...

More propaganda form the nuclear lobby..

Seriously its getting funny now, the way that some of this BS is being put across (other than that of a child who simply resorts to name calling) is almost like there saying "nuclear radiation is GOOD for you" and very loud voices all of a sudden appearing that we need to build MORE nuclear plants as if its the ONLY logical step.

Its just like the fracking bankers, they totally screw up and what do we do, I know lets give them more opportunity to frack us over some more.. And this is exactly what they are saying..

Hey I know we used weapons grade material in our power plants (a gram of which is usually enough to kill anyone in a matter of minutes - why do you think it was used in weapons?) and that this happened to get damaged in an earth quake (not to meantion that alot of these types of plants are bulit on fault lines) and then it leaked. But can we build some more? I'm sure all of you are just dying to move in next to your nearest nuclear power plant being that radiation is suddenly 'good' for you. Here gargle some fukushima seawater. hmmm tasty!

European parliament loves the Tobin tax

ooFie

I can pretty much guess the only ones who will be up for this are bankers.

My guess is not only will they pass the cost on to each of us.

I'm pretty much guessing they will add a sur-charge each and every time they do it, so in effect making a pile money from it - and hey not their fault if its law they need to cover their 'operating costs'.

The problem doesnt just lay with the bankers (though they arent helpping any!) but the whole entire monetary system as well as our own attitudes to bussiness and life!

Money is produced into our system with debt (called 'interest') and adding this debt when its produced is stupid. Because the only way you can pay back the debt is to produce more money, which as soon as it is produced has debt attached to it - Is it any wonder that national debts are running out of control?!

So the only way to stop running away debt econnomys is to stop producing debt at the creation level. (and no this should be left in the hands of the bankers)

Also each and every company is obsessed with make more and more profit each and every year. So end up eatting more and more reasources, producing more and more polution because they seem to be under the impression that we live on a planet with infinite resources, which we dont!

And we're just as bad, drawn to every new shiney thing put in front of our faces, made from the new 'liquidmetal' or other highly toxic material made by some 5 year old in some sweatshop in the 3rd world, just so you can be charged 500% more than it cost to make. Just so you can show your friends some retarded video on youtube for that one instance that you can go "yeah! that was well worth ruining the lives of some brown people living in some dirt hole!"

Google contradicts own counsel in face of antitrust probe

ooFie

What a NSA backed company is telling your lies.. ! your suprised?

Google has been blocking or at least divirting traffic for sometime now.

They have been targetting news-farms (like the grudge report (though not the grudge report itself)) that have been critical or exposing the corruption of the US government (and others) at the request of the US government.

I flicked over to one of the US news (propaganda) channels a while back to see Mrs Clinton say that they were loosing the "info war", and was asking for more money to fight it.

Funny really, if you just told the truth you wouldnt need lies apon lies and maybe the population may believe what their would-be masters were telling them.

Then you wouldnt need a war (yet another one, how many are they loosing now?) on information.

Is there anything they wont have a 'war' with?

Assange bailed again

ooFie

Same S*@£ diffrent day!

Still seeing the same old rhetoric from the mainstream U.S media, with the 'out-rage' in this guy posting "unclassified and freely available" -but yet somehow still private (by which they mean they dont want the little people to now about them) information on how the U.S government (& others) is using some very nasty tactics not just some 3rd world tinpot nation but also on democratic western nations - also known as their allies.

But yet its Assange whos the bad guy, because it may get someone, somewhere killed (even though there is no evidence to support that - still doesnt stop the ongoing mantra) But all the underhanded and in some cases illegal actions of your 'officals' is perfectly okay?!

But hey when your 'officals' are above the law - what could go wrong!

But dont think I like Assange, from what I can tell this monkey is just in it for the money and fame.

From all the donations that go into supporting Wikileaks (which adds up to millions every year) for 'running costs' - he pays himself most of it!

And from people who originally helpped setup the site up, say he was more interested in setting up the bank transfers than anything else and how much he could make! - Yeah! sounds like a up-standing guy to me.

To be honest it just all sounds like a big excuse to start putting more regulation on the web. - Which if you hadnt noticed has been gathering support since this started up - And no its nothing to do with this case as most of this was being put forward before it all started, its just that it was being thrown out because it was against freedom of speech etc etc.. - but hey you dont need that now do you?

After all the government wants you to have Freedom of Speech - just (not by the looks of it) when your critising the government itself, in which case your a TERRORist!

No more books on Ireland's banned book list

ooFie

Such is the world we live in...

I've never seen the point of banning anything.

Making age limits!? okay fair enough! but banning!

If your going to Ban the free expressions and ideas of our species then you may of well ban evolution (yes! yes! certain areas of the world)

Anything you ban goes underground! then you really do get the sickos!

IMO Really is better that everything be on the table, That way at least you cant say you didnt know what you were getting into!

'Porn lock' heralds death of WikiLeaks, internet, democracy, universe

ooFie

And the ongoing tread continue....

No one else think it all rather convenience, that in the past few months that laws in countries here and there have been trying to push through laws dealing with 'policing the internet' for whatever reasons, but the vast majority of which have appeared to of failed. Mainly down to freedom of speech etc etc.

Then all of a sudden we get this wikileaks crap all over our screen, most of which is of very little interest to anyone!, and the really bad stuff we were already aware of, or at least had our own suspicions about.

But now its all we can do to stop corrupt fat leech... sorry politicians, coming at us from all angles telling us that we need to 'police the internet', again for 'whatever reason' appears to be most exaggerated for there own populations, and we're now getting the easily persuded thinking that this is a good thing?

Giving governments (regardless who's) the ability to shutdown any platform for free speech is a bad idea!

And this is what this would be all about, anything else they say is just to panda to your own populus fears.

Txt tax would wipe out half UK deficit, claims union baron

ooFie

*lol*

@Whomever

Why would government need to borrow money from whomever at intrest when it has the right to make law, collect taxes and produce money.. in fact they kind of do the last one now, but they are called government bonds and they are simply a promise to pay but are still perfectly legal, because really that is all money is..

So why would we continue to pay interest to private banks for money they didnt really put into the system when our governments could simply produce the money interest free?

Have you ever wondered by your local bank was called a branch?

Also look up fiat currency and fractional reserve banking.

A cloud of deadly Teddy Bears! - your kids wouldnt sleep unless there was a monster under the bed!

Does anyone else feel that this technology could be far better used by putting objects into orbit?

And by 'objects' I dont mean warheads! Would be far better than using rockets to get large parts off the ground!

US man slips into perv scanner-busting undies

ooFie

Er..

@GrahamT

"Opting out of being scanned means opting out of flying."

No it doesnt! Its just the impression they like to give. There is NO legal base to refuse the service and anyone who does so could end up in court.

There is no law saying they have to be scanned and plenty of laws already in place as to why you shouldnt/couldnt, ranging from privacy laws, health and safety & human rights.

Er...

Far as I am aware cant you just 'opt out' of being scanned!?

It was never a law that you HAD to be scanned!

Though from what I've heard, if you dare try to stand up for your rights they make a big fuss about it and makes sures everyone else knows by shouting and making a scene.

- You are free!.. to do as we tell you.
