Past time for Microsoft

Recently several companies in Canada were evaluating virtualization solution for their Cloud based applications integration and Microsoft sang praises of their Hyper-V over other more established solutions in regard reliability, security, scalability and flexibility, which , as this Patch Report and several security bulletins have shown to be totally rubbish sales propaganda.

KVM and Xen used for several high end virtualization projects in funded University projgrams and small Petroleum Trading corporations have consistently proven superior to Hyper-V in every case, so it seem ridiculous that any sane technology user would choose Hyper-V instead.

SQL Server 2017's first rc lands and – yes! – it runs on Linux

What about performance and security - on Linux?

All the talk from Microsoft and comments here at TheRegister do not address - in real world, factual technical terms - performance issues in comparison of running SQL Server on Windows versus running the product on Redhat Enterprise Linux or Suse Enterprise Linux as examples.

In the end, the proof of the pudding is in the eating!, and Microsoft products have shown a "fail" result in that regard.

IETF moves meeting from USA to Canada to dodge Trump travel ban

Canada is in America - North America

The article author has apparently fallen victim to the very popular mistake in his statement about hosting the IETF meeting "out of America" - in Canada, no less, as if the word "America" automatically means United States of America alone.

Over the past thirty plus years of residing here in good ole USA, I have found that most citizens who have never or rarely traveled abroad almost always are ignorant about the "correct" terminology with North America, Central America, South America, as if they do not exist, particularly - even in archaeology documentaries referring to America with any consideration what-so-ever for Canada or Mexico.

Richard Chirgwin and indeed most "Americans!! " need some serious, non-fake education in Geography.

Address the real software vulnerability

There should be no sympathy for companies, organizations, academia, governments or any other entity that continues to use Microsoft Windows Operating System (OS) Software that has been confirmed as the attack point for NotPetya, Petya, WannaCry and every other Ransomeware and attack Vector in last several years, including those against HomeDepot, Target, TJX and dozens of other victims.

Viruses and Ransomeware do not affect Apple MacOS, Linux or ChromeOS computing endpoints, so the continued use of Windows is a stupid and non-sensical decision in 2017, particularly for Business and governments.

Richard Clark, Cabinet level appointee as Cyber Czar to President George Bush administration, who was further retained by President Obama for a while, declared in his retirement speech in 2010 that one of the greatest threats to USA going forward was Cyber Terrorism, and Microsoft OS and other software were major contributors to that vulnerability.

Enough already about Microsoft poor security

In June 2017, all this idiocy of Microsoft Windows 10 poor default security should convince any and all computer uses to switch to either Apple or better yet Linux desktops and Notebooks. Linux Servers have already displaced most of Windows Server crapware.

Unfortunately Microsoft has such a psychological hold on so many millions of individuals, businesses and organizations, even governments, particularly for Americans - clinically described as Stockholm Syndrome - when hostages eventually support and love their captor, that the company's products users are unable to clearly or mentally consider superior and considerably more cost effective alternative software solutions.

It has become tiring and nauseating to incessantly hear and read about the distresses of Microsoft poor quality and poor performance software. Enough already!

Does Microsoft have what it takes to topple Google Docs?

W. Anderson

Why LibreOffice - product and Cloud services not included?

Why, in God's name, has not the article authors included for discussion the LibreOffice professional Office Suite now available as a Cloud service, much like Office365 and Google Docs.

Moreover, most of European countries, and nations in Asia, South America, as well as large entities in USA have standardized "officially" on the Open Document format based LibreOffice.

Technology reporting has become so crass and shallow, catering only to largest named and sales commercial products and companies that quality, comprehensive journalism is now almost extinct.

The Linux cloud swap that spells trouble for Microsoft and VMware

W. Anderson

unacceptable omission

While Linux is more "popular" in business and government use than the BSD UNIX-like and Solaris Operating Systems (OS), that is no good reason for the article author to omit even mentioning FreeBSD "Jails" and Solaris "containers", 2 mature and capable container technologies in same category and similar to Linux Docker, but never the less with like-wise excellent container features and functionality to Docker.

Popularity or quantity should never become the overriding factors in any one area of technology reporting, particularly if credible product technologies in that segment are side lined.

Reporting as done in USA on many topics should never be dependent on esoteric values of more or larger is better.

Linux, not Microsoft, the real winner of Windows Server on ARM

W. Anderson

Re: dream on...

Or ........converted to PostgreSQL/(commercial) EnterpriseDB for best performance, greater reliability and significantly better security.

An informal survey of enterprise Linux developers and companies has shown that only a few who are "contracted" for some Windows development are using SQLServer on Linux.

Furthermore, Linux SQLServer does not run natively - actually horribly, and is a total dud on Linux.

Michael Dell? More like Michael in-Dell-nial: No public cloud, no future

Dell benefitting signifintly from Microsoft Public Cloud

As long as Microsoft is closely supporting and using Dell infrastructure - with exception of VMWare.against which they use Hyper-V - for their Public Cloud Computing offering, it behooves Michael Dell to not spend exorbitant hundreds of millions $$dollars themselves, when the benefits of Public Cloud Computing accrue to the company via Microsoft investment, and in concert for Hybrid Cloud from which they gain directly.

One possible downside is IBM, Oracle, Gooble and other Microsoft Competitors not procuring Dell server hardware.

Don't stop me! Why Microsoft's inevitable browser irrelevance isn't

W. Anderson

A myopic and unrealistically narrow perspective on Microsoft IE.

Some admissions of reality have been excluded from Mr. Cartwright's musings.

One, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Edge browsers have suffered substantially more bugs and breakage than Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. At least if one goes by results of Browser reliability and security reports from credible organizations.

Two, the author keeps referring to the Microsoft world, which my understanding of his explanation refers almost exclusively to Office365 and onlineMicrosoft applications. This again is inaccurate, since - according to Microsoft, about one third and climbing of their Azure Cloud services are running some distribution of Linux or the FreeBSd operating system (OS) to support Docker Containerization and non-MS applications, that are equally accessible from Chrome, Firefox, Vivaldi, Safari or any other HTML5 browser.

The European Union, including soon exited Britian, many Asian, South American, a few African countries has "officially" adopted the Open Document Format document standard, via Office suites built to that technology specification (Office breaks that compliance) and available via Cloud based versions.

Microsoft, nor IE/Edge play any part in that equation, unless the writer's thinking is restricted to USA alone, that is usual position for many technology writers who extrapolate everything here in USA and from Microsoft as being automatically relevant or indispensible to the rest of the (real) world, which is not space between New York and California.

Apart from all the tongue-in-cheek comments, Canaduans have proven to be more civilized - as opposed to term barbarian than many of lf not most Americans.

Having lived in both countries, the differences to me are quite stark, and while Americans can and will incessantly spou mantra of USA being "Greatest nation in the world", and "Liberty and Justice for All" , the reality bespeaks a vast population that is ignorant abount most any topic not American - and even then they are without facts, arrogant in their ignorance and boasting about being better than anyone else, while losing a good quality of life even as the country implodes.

Microsoft loves Linux so much, its OneDrive web app runs like a dog on Windows OS rivals

Serve thn right! - for trusting Mcrsoft with good UNIX/Linux interoperability

Those using Linux end user computing with Microsoft OneDrive really deserve no sympathey or reprieve from the treatment they receive from Microsoft.

Only really stupid people would even think that they get equal treatment in linking their Linux based devices to any Microsoft service. Apache HTTP Server developers and PhP core developers have repeatedly indicated that these particular technologies run much better on an all UNIX/Linux (NIX) base than on or linked to a Microsoft Windows foundation.

Even naive technology users trying Microsoft SQL Server on Linux have gotter poor results.

The purpose is clear - Microsoft wants all non_Microsoft software users to ditch their wares and switch to an "all Microsoft" base, else suffer the consequences of terrible support of your NIX on Microsoft, who have reportedly broken non_Microsoft applications on purpose.

Microsoft, still in catch-up mode

This and seversl other articles about Microsoft's adoption of ARM based server technology always give "impression" that somehow Microsft is visionary in that regard.

In fact, not alternative-fact, Redhat, SuSE Enterprise Linux as well as several FreeBSD (UNIX-like) based projects have been successfully working on advanced ARM based servers for years, paving the way for Micrsoft.

At least Kudos to Microsoft for wishing to catch-up.

LG, Huawei unwrap 'Samsung Galaxy-killers'

W. Anderson

For years I used a Blackberry which had the requisite functionality for my technology profession needs, and just last year "finally" upgraded to Huawei P8 smartphone which was evaluated by several Mobile media as equal in quality, workmanship and features/functionality to Samsung Galaxy S7 and Apple iPhone7.

Not only did the phone live up to it's praise, but was approximately "half" cost of an iPhone7.

For first time un my life, I am keen to upgrade to new Huawei P10 - in act like many smartphone

lovers, since the choice of an excellent alternative to the 2 hegemony players' products that are ridiculously over priced is refreshing.

Dirty data, flogged cores: YES, Microsoft SQL Server R Services has its positives

W. Anderson

Not a new R language/Relational Database capability

Scientists , economists and others have reprted using R programming language in conjunction with PostgreSQL Object/Relational database as well, so I do not se this opportunity as specific or original to Microsoft SQL Server only, other than the company promoting this new found functionality as their own.

SQL Server on Linux? HELL YES! Linux on Windows 10? Meh

W. Anderson

purely propaganda push for Microsoft SQLServer

Scott Gilbertson obviously does noy perform any high level database programming, since he would be well aware that SQL Server has strict limitations on transaction throughput, reliability and flexibility that is mandatory for most Linux/BSD deployments, as compared to SQLServer used primarily in Windows corporate departmental scenarios.

Can anyone image SQLServer running NY or NASDAQ Stock exchange? The results would be an absolute disaster.

SQLServer does NOT work fluently with ZFS file system of choice in several GNU/Linux and BSD UNIX-like operating systems (OS) infrastructure systems, and the article author (purposely) omitted to mention that SQLServer does not "natively" on Linux - a major impediment for many administration functions.

Is Mr. Gilbertson a "paid" or voluntary shill for Microsoft, as he writing would surely indicate as much?

God save the Queen... from Donald Trump. So say 1 million Britons

Donald Trump may very well be amoung the most 10 deplorables who possibly meet the Queen, as he is probably one of the few widely reviled world leaders, especially one from a "developed nation that is the most poweful military country and a G20 nation, who has claimed to retain the loyalty of his voters/supporters even if he senselessly murdered someone on Fifth Avenure in NY City, has "never" retracted or aplogized for heinous public denigration and actions taken against Latinos and American blacks, and is determined to return torture to USA practice.

Britons, and populace of very many countries at least have intelligence and fortitude to publicly rebuke this man most indentify as an idiot and threat to world peace, and whom a significant proportion of US citizenry worship Trump just for being as out of touch with reality and "truth" as they are..

Netgear: Nothing to see here, please disperse. Just another really bad router security hole

W. Anderson

tech retailers just as dense as consumers on this Netgear security issue

The very sad and sick aspect of this Netgear Router firmware fiasco is that at least 2 large technology retailers in my area of Northern New jersey, USA, one Staples and the other a Bestbuy sneered when I showed them the CERT warning just after public disclosure, one totally ignorant of the issue, and the other indicating that they were aware, but since their corporate or distribution center had sent no action update, they would continue to sell the 3 or more affected Netgear routers, without even warning purchasers of probable critical firmware upgrade requirement soon thereafter

There is no wonder that it is neigh impossible to thwart Cyber intrusions in USA when technology sales companies and consumers are blaze and a bit dense about using common sense and prudence in addressing technology security issues.

China and Russia aren't ready to go it alone on tech, but their threats are worryingly plausible

W. Anderson

Article false statement

Simon Sharwood's statement that ..." Edward Snowden, whose SUGGESTIONS that American vendors were complicit in the United States' surveillance efforts..." is factually incorrect, and this reporting is no less egregious and faulty that the fake news that abounded in the recent US Presidential campaigns.

Edward Snowden "released" actual US government documents to credible UK, US, French and other journals, which categorically showed the illegal snooping action of the US National Security Agency (NSA) in collaboration/cooperation with US technology companies, which is not Mt. Snowden's opinions.

This put Mr. Sharwood's whole article in question, as it thus difficult to tell how much else of the article is Sharwood's unfounded "opinion or Suggestion", rather than fact.

Microsoft refuses to join the Zero Outage brigade, Google and AWS keep mum

Furtherance of Microsoft dystopia.

The excuse syndrome for Microsoft has set in, since none of the companies in the Zero Outage cooperative have ever claimed to guarantee 100% uptime, but work together to significantly reduce vulnerabilities with such program.

It is unlikely that much improvement can or will be made with Microsoft software for reliability and security, since tens of millions of their naive, ignorance and "fact" dis-believing supporters will go on buying such broken technology, and won't hold the company to any sane standard of quality in their products.

SQL Server on Linux: Runs well in spite of internal quirks. Why?

W. Anderson

Stupid project still propagandized

The fact that Tim Anderson would phrase SQLServer on Linux as ..."Some limitations but most things work" is poor recommendation for most all experienced Linux users who have for generations expected and received great performing SQL RDBMS that consistently outperformed Microsoft Windows and with SQLServer in every benchmark - Reliability, Scalability, Flexibility, Security, Return-on-Investment (ROI), and particularly "multi-platform" support - for Linux, UNIX, Mac OS X, BSD UNIX-like and even Windows.

Most senior technologists from several large technology firms, organizations and Database groups have commented to me that (paraphrasing) .."SQLServer on Linux is a complete waste of time since it does not compete well with stronger SQL databases, e.g. EnterpriseDB/PostgreSQL, and actually "does not run natively" under Linux for maximum configurability and performance.

How pathetic a situation is that for this "SQLServer on Linux" weird project, even for Microsoft Windows and applications users.

Kaspersky Mocking Windows protection

Nice socks gimmick by Eugene Kaspersky, "... who sadly wasn't present last night) said next year will feature lots of malware and business will be good."

He was not referring to Apple MacOS, Linux, ChromeOS, but Microsoft which every day seems to entangle their software into more and more malware, and is a total morass.

Good that at least Kaspersky, Sophos, Symantec and others can still enjoy significant income - from Microsoft software disaster, even though "PC" tales are tanking each and every year.

Lenovo: If you value your server, block Microsoft's November security update

W. Anderson

Stupidity of Lenovo for *NIX consideration

Even after all the previous recent software disasters and now this from Microsoft server software, Lenovo remains abnormally committed to Microsoft - to the extreme degree of dissing configuration requests for Redhat or SuSE Enterprise Linux on their servers and being embroiled in dispute over Linux install on their Yoga tablet.

Any person, business, organization or government interested in deploying the far superior Linux or BSD UNIX-Like operating systems (OS) for their reliability, performance or security needs should never consider Lenovo, unless they too, are like Lenovo have Redmonds finger up their anus.

Microsoft update servers left all Azure RHEL instances hackable

W. Anderson

Mirosoft shenanigans again

Microsoft supporters need to take note - seriously, that the vulnerabilities referenced are for Redhat Enterprise Servers running "under" Microsoft Azure Cloud Services, which do not exist in Amazon AWS or OpenStack Cloud Computing Services from Redhat. Oracle, AT&T, Cisco, Intel, IBM, Ericsson, Citrix, Fujitsu, HPE, NEC or any of the other one hundred plus largest Cloud computing services based on Redhat Linux.

There is no level of stupidity to which Microsoft clowns will not sink in attempting to make case for Microsoft, when even Microsoft has concluded and admitted "publicly" it's strong, albeit almost total dependence on Linux and Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) for all it's networking infrastructure.

Microsoft ❤️ Linux? Microsoft ❤️ running its Windows' SQL Server software on Linux

W. Anderson

Windows DB a waste of time on Linux

These actions from Microsoft - in porting, or rather running virtualized Windows based SQL Server on Linux do not answer some fundamental questions.

What are the Performance,Reliability, Scalability, Flexibility and especially Security functionality differences between running SQLServer on Linux versus running enterprise PostGreSQL as EnterpriseDB, OracleDB or IBM Enterprise Informix?

While these competitors all excel over SQLServer in categories mentioned above, only PostgreSQL/EnterpriseDB offers a significantly better Return on Investment (ROI) over SQLServer, both initially and in long term cost and support service outlays.

Besides which, all SQLServer competitors run on many more Operating Sytems and hardware platforms, including Linux and Windows than SQLServer ever will.

Re: You're seeing conspiracies where they don't exist

It appears that BinkyTheMagicPaperclip does not understand the English language, particularly in regard my comment.

IBM sold" many thousands" of their X86 servers with Redhat Enterprise Linux pre-installed, and that particular Server line had been "certified" for Linux support if purchaser wished ti deploy their own Linux via subscription, e.g. for SuSE Linux enterprise.

There are many large enterprises, and small ones that run "banks" of X86 servers - for Website hosting, Large database farms and for several other functions. Lenovo are in conspiracy with Microsoft to prevent this type deployment/purchase, since large sales volumes/$$$dollars are involved, which nullifies the excuse.

W. Anderson

Lenovo Redmond lapdog

Even 12 months ago several former IBM systems Integrators has issues with Lenovo on the x86 Server business they bought from Big Blue.

Every request for Redhat Enterprise Linux pre-install - a popular and almost standard fare for IBM, was turned down, with Lenovo even disavowing whether RH Linux was tested satisfactorily nor was certified on newly acquired X86 Server line.

American idiocy on race

It has been shown - unequivocally - in several very credible, USA/International studies that the USA has progressed significantly less in racial "equality", not tolerance, than either Germany after Nazism or South Africa after Apartheid.

Before the loonies descend on the post, none of these studies, by US Universities, WHO, Social research institutions said that Germany, South Africa or any other country had racial nirvana, only that they had made more progress toward racial equality ideal.

The USA however, in on another planet - denial of facts, reality and a nut-case Presidential candidate.

Linus Torvalds says ARM just doesn't look like beating Intel

W. Anderson

What about Powr architecture

It would have been very interesting and informative to hear Linus Torvald's opinion about the IBM Powr CPU based architecture, especially because IBM has invested tens of hundreds of millions $$dollars in optimizing Linux for that architecture, which has been "openly" license to any organization/corporations and or governments - now dozens - without previous licensing/royalty restrictions.

Maybe Torvalds has very little direct hands-on experience with the Linux/Powr architecture, and therefore feels left out.

Lenovo denies claims it plotted with Microsoft to block Linux installs

W. Anderson

Lenovo division of Microsoft

Lenovo have even proven deceitful in sales persons attitude and statements to me recently in regard installing 'Redhat Enterprise Linux' on one of their Servers, for which the Free/Open Source Software (OS) was readily available on same servers under IBM Server.

When I challenged this position through an IBM Partner/System Integrator, the company indicated allowing Linux install, but could not provide any credible Website link at that time, to confirm such OS support. Fellow small business consultants have indicated Lenovo being hostile and uncooperative to any Linux support on Lenovo/IBM x86 servers.

Ever since Lenovo acquired both the PC business and then X86 Server business from IBM, who always allowed and even supported Linux installs on their ThinkPad Notebooks, desktops and Servers, Lenovo has been accused by numerous long time systems Integrators of having Microsoft's finger up their rear end, which is why the company has been so acquiescent to Redmond.

When the Chinese government "mandated" Linux for all government computer systems procurement going forward in near future, Levono strongly protested and fought this decision in favour of and backed by Microsoft.

Levovo is nothing more than a crass Microsoft lackey.

Microsoft's Service Fabric for Linux hits public preview

W. Anderson

Upside Down solution

Any knowledgeable business owner, meaning not those who know and accept only Microsoft speak or lame solutions, would be insane to chose Microsoft for hosting Linux based Cloud Services with Linux applications under Microsoft Azure Cloud services.

It has been reported dozens of times by eminent Linux and Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) core developers and organizations that pure Linux/FOSS platforms supporting Windows client services performs significantly faster, more reliably and more securely than the lame concept of running Linux Operating System (OS) base and applications as guests on wobbly Microsoft foundation.

Dozens of credible, (reasonably) objective real world case studies and live projects in USA and several European and Asian nations clearly corroborate such findings.

There are however, probably many Microsoft loyal customers, who are disgruntled with their heroine's technology and are aware of benefits in FOSS, but are at least somewhat pacified by Microsoft second tier offerings.

The world is awash, mostly in USA, with Microsoft Stockholm Syndrome.

Rackspace finds its $4.3bn sugar daddy

Trojan Horse move?

Rumour - from fairly credible sources - has it that Apollo Global Resources has been funded by Microsoft to purchase Rackspace so that the resulting private firm can then be easily acquired by Redmond facility itself.

It has been reported on more than one occasion that several of largest proprietary companies "code contributors" to Linux want Linus Torvalds out of the way in regard control of kernel development, so that Linux foundation initially and then these commercial entities will ultimately gain ful control, especially as said before Microsoft that Zemlin basically worships.

Ditch your Macs, Dell tells EMC staff

W. Anderson

Dell's Microsoft dilemma

No matter the power of Dells being offered to EMC staff, these alternative computing devices cannot honestly be considered as " nice replacement kit" when they still run Microsoft Windows operating System (OS) software, which is probably the reason these EMC folk chose Apple in first place.

The fact that Dell has placed it's complete being and soul in the hands of Microsoft, for Server OS, Mobile (Wow!) and most likely storage software shows that they have no regard for the most advanced, efficient/high performance , reliable and secure EMC solutions based on Linux, and for Apple iOS/Android Mobile platforms.

Denial is not a river in Egypt, it is the disconnect from reality being exhibited by Dell in their servile relations with Redmond.

Assinine business plan for many years

For many years I was a regular Mail-order customer of Systemex's retail unit - Tigerdirect, for various hardware but discontinued using the company as a viable source, particularly Servers and networking equipment due to their rabbit faith of only supporting and selling Microsoft Windows and networking. when the world was moving to more mobile (Apple iOS and Android) and Linux for advanced servers and networking.

If Microsoft was financially supporting the depressed PC marketplace at Tigerdirect/Systemex (proven in many FTC reports) , then the company was negligent, in not adopting popular mobile technology mentioned above - representing about 95% of all mobile, and/or not contracting "perpetual" support from Microsoft - even to the death of PC generation.

Entities that enter into these convoluted marriages with Microsoft never learn, even after losing their shirt, pants and shoes, while Microsoft pushes on.

We ain't in 1996 anymore, Dorothy: SQL Server 2016 proves it

Microsoft cheap propanda article

This article possesses no technical information or detail as to how "new" SQLServer offers superior or even equivalent functionality including for Cloud Computing, compared to prominent databases of Oracle, Google Cloud/SpammerDB, MariaDB, latest PostgreSQL/EnterpriseDB or even advanced NoSQL object/cum relational databases and others.

Is this reason Microsoft is partially porting SQLServer to Linux. so that the "close integration" of Redhat Enterprise Linux and FreeBSD, into Azure Cloud Computing Services - official and public announcements, so that SQLServer will offer at least some measure of viable SQL database choice?

To-date SQLServer does not process the massive amounts of "spatial data" - as in NASA/weather forecasting , a standard capability of PostgreSQL/EnterpriseDB.

It is also noted that no author was indicated for the aticle. A sick and crass propaganda move.

Furthermore the British Film Board, nor any other entity in the UK (or elsewhere) has the know-how or expertise to rate Websites for example - on climate change, Astronomy (NASA), technology in it's myriad categories, Sports related Websites, healthcare websites, and so on.

Apple quietly launches next-gen encrypted file system

W. Anderson

perpetual catch for Apple

It is a matter of record that Apple attempted to 'license' the ZFS File System from Oracle Corp., but could not legally meet the Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) licensing terms and conditions.

Any bets that the new APFS File System will (try) cloning many of the features and functionality of ZFS, btrfs and maybe venerable XFS File Systems that are compulsory for supporting fast Internet traffic, security checking, advanced encryption, live snapshots, etc., but without functionality for massive data centre support, Cloud Computing, Docker and Jails type Containerization/virtualization and other traits of enterprise and high end scientifc computing for which Apple has absolutely no interest or competence.

Maybe Apple should license their new File System to Microsoft which cannot seem to create a viable File system to save it's life. They too, are attempting, with very limited good results to emulate advanced File System noted above, which is possibly reason Microsoft integrated Linux and FreeBSS into their Cloud Computing and other technologies, maybe for access to the superior File Systems.

Oh, Red Hat. Contain yourself and your 'new innovations' talk

W. Anderson

Once it was Microsoft "only" announcements and propaganda

Is Chris Mellor that concerned because all this innovation and advanced technology announcements, particularly regarding Cloud Computing is from Redhat and not Microsoft, the darling and heroine of many The Register pundits.

What is so ironic is that a significant amount of Free/Open Source Software (FOSS), including RedHat Enterprise, Ubuntu and Debian Linux, as well as FreeBSD, Apache Hadoop, Spark and other indispensable FOSS is now being closely integrated into most Microsoft technologies, especially Cloud Computing services.

It was only a short time ago that Steve Ballmer and Bil Gates declared that Linux was Communist, a cancer, that the GPL- under which Linux is licensed is stupid, and that most other innovative FOSS software was crap and could never compete with Windows and rest of Microsoft's portfolio, that the company now "dubiously" embraces.

A sea change in technology progress.

Dell close to selling software division for $2bn – reports

W. Anderson

Dell's confused state of mind

Dell's success is due almost entirely to their Desktop and laptop sales with Microsoft Window. They also experienced a blip with small server sales with Windows, but now that these 2 categories are on down swing. along with that of Lenovo for same reasons, which all other periphery business cannot make up for in such negative trends.

Two possible reasons can be pointed to as reasons for this dilemma. Dell was never a networking or enterprise service company at heart, and recent. rapid global technology moves to Mobile computing – where Dell is non-existent - and Cloud Domputing/Docker virtualization/containerization amoung other related developments has caught the company out completely, with outdated networking architectures (no software Defined Networking) and partnering with Microsoft exclusively for Cloud Computing/virtualization when Amazon AWS and Openstack based products were eating Microsoft's lunch.

The other significant reason is technology industry, enterprise and governments adoption of Linux for all infrastructure requirements against the Windows preferred and pushed from Dell.

A recent very credible study of technology needs going forward showed that 85% of the Fortune 1000 corporations, US government departments and especially international governments declared their intent of making Linux and other Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) the foundation of their technology use.

Dell and Quest software division has very little experience and no expertise in non-Microsoft technologies, and SonicWall was initially a Linux structured product, so it makes perfect sense for the company to ditch these technologies.

The really difficult choice comes however, when Dell's Microsoft obligations and commitments, not to mention their inseparable bonding, come in direct conflict to strongly competitive solutions from EMC and especially VMWare that Microsoft has been furiously attempting to destroy for several years.

Confirmed: Dell software sell-off

Non-US encryption is 'theoretical,' claims CIA chief in backdoor debate

W. Anderson

encryption technologies now moreinternally developed

There are many aspects of John Brennan's testimony, and the technical background to encryption that need to clarified in more detail to know the veracity of his claims, since I am aware of world class encryption technology not developed in USA or owned/controlled by US entity, and there are dominant Operating Systems (OS) and Networking software - not from Microsoft or US companies that included capability for extremely strong encryption for data transmission and storage.

Unfortunately in 2016, the technology environment for security, especially regarding encryption has substantially more internationally development and innovation base, so there very little "fact" than can be attributed to Mr. Brennan's wishful thinking.

basic technology education needs substantial improvement first

A recent critical report from the (USA/International) Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) found that computer science education and training in USA are sub-standard in quality curriculum and results for preparing those targeting careers in technology field.

These 10,000 scholarships offered by Cisco for Cyber Security training would therefore have to be set on foundation that is significantly more substantive in curriculum content and testing results that meet the expectation and requirement the technology industry indicates as mandatory.

There should not be a world of difference in quality of technology education between that which is offered by MIT, Stanford and UCB - as only 3 examples, and popular but weak training programs provided by hundreds if not thousands of Community and 4 year colleges, as well as prohibitively expensive technology training institutes proliferating the national landscape.

The USA is already falling behind. Poor quality education does not help.

Products and services moved to Microsoft preferred use again

In the same way that Microsoft screwed effective use of Skype and Hotmail by Linux users, offering sub-par and/or broken products as compared to services for Windows users, one can expect that any Linked-In user - in Linux/FreeBSD only end-user and Server environments like myself wil be eventually, if not almost immediately blocked out.

Are there any other professional contact/collaboration organizations out there where subscribers are not jerked around by large corporate marketing interest only?

Re: Microsost Azure cloud services now more UNIX/Linux (*NIX) than Windows.

ZFS and btrfs file systems for FreeBSD and linux respectively - world better in performance, reliability than Microsoft ResFS file system. Docker "only came to Windows" as native technology in last 10 months, and docker developers themselves state that containerization works significantly better on Linux base than Windows base. Cloud and networking Administration tools for UNIX/Linux do not work well or at all under Microsoft;s tools or Active directory and specific docker container admin tools.

Check CoreOS business , a major core contributor to Docker for details on how lame Docker is on Windows, or check information sources from Cisco.

Why not pick Docker on UNIX/Linux base to begin with?

Since Docker Containerization has become almost indespensible in the Cloud Computing arena, Why would any knowledgeable Cloud purchaser go with Microsoft when most all of the Docker development community indicate significant performance and reliability advantages of Docker under Linux and UNIX-like operating systems" (OS) clouds than on Hyper-V, or Azure.
