Biting?
Well the thing is the register is supposed to be biting the hand that feeds IT. I cannot remember reading any other its-not-so-bad articles here?
Which makes this article seem a rather biased towards apple.

True. Writing XAML by hand is no better than writing code.
But the xaml makes it possible for tools like Expression Blend to use. Skilled designers using Blend really can make you app look good. I guess you didn't work on a very big app or on a very good looking app.
I bought and now enjoy a samsung wave because the galaxy was quite a bit more expensive.
True, I bought the phone for the hardware, fast CPU, excellent audio, 720p video and a SAMOLED screen and not for all the apps. It's true there are not a lot off great apps for it but then again I didn't see anything must have in the android app store either
I was a bit worried about pentile too, especially after the nexus one controversy that was raised by arstechnica. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2010/03/secrets-of-the-nexus-ones-screen-science-color-and-hacks.ars/
But apparently this is not an issue with all pentile screens since some things can be tweaked by the driver.
I bought this phone for my wife for 150 euro and she loves it. Name me one other phone with a nice capacitive AMOLED screen and wifi for that price?
Off course this phone cannot compete with a high end smartphone that costs twice as much. Probably you get the phones for free and don't worry about price.
What I'd like to suggest is that you take pricing into account when rating phones, or list superior alternatives in the same price range.
In one day? You didn't learn it very well then. And about the VS vs Eclipse remark that's a pretty subjective since I love to work with VS and hate to switch to Eclipse for Java or PHP development. If I was serious about these languages I'd really look for an alternative first before settling on Eclipse. But that's just my opinion.
Expression Blend really helps us to create nice and beautiful UI's in what would otherwise have been boring functional UI's.
And it's more than that, because you can prototype UI's you can play with more ideas and come up with richer and better tuned UI's.
At this moment our programmers are programming and we have designers and analysts working on the UI. I hope that the days were programmers are spending months on trying something are gone.
BTW we're making windows only desktop clients.
It's also hard for most developers who are used to OO. Also it's not as if most developers are bored, doing nothing, waiting for a new language.
So what I guess will happen is that some devs play with it during free time write some .NET assemblies and incorporate those in bigger programs.
Programming languages should not be pushed by marketing, they need to be adopted by developers.
Ouch!
Imagine Microsoft making a similar move. No Java, no python nothing but C++ or a .NET language.
Why would they want to do this? Performance? Stability? Money?
I guess what adobe can do is write a compiler that outputs C++ code that then can be compiled to target Jobs API's directly.
Is easy these days. I like to think that both sides BIG Enterprise and lean and mean script kiddies learn from each other.
Hence the dynamic keyword in .NET 4. and the rise of ASP.NET MVC as an alternative of ASP.NET.
While I applaud standards they are notoriously slow in their inception and I fear there will always be room for cutting edge non standard implementations.
Apart from HTML 5 I am then thinking about the new C++ standard. Or about how DirectX always seems to be more feature complete than OpenGL these days.
As long as there is respect for your fellow developers and you can appreciate what they are doing you can really enjoy programming and learning.
Loved this article because it tapped so many sources.
When I read this article I thought. Ouch bad for silverlight then I looked up the what's new in silverlight 4 document.
In total there are 5 pages of a 38 page document are about 'trusted applications' that contain features that are handy for some applications. It doesn't make silverlight windows only.
Ooh well I guess an article about a better and improved Silverlight doesn't get you a lot of hits.
But then I expect more from the reg than from slashdot.
Note: I use firefox and I like, before I used IE and liked it. I even used Chrome and liked it. Reason I now stick to firefox is firebug.
That having said. I am growing tired of Google pushing chrome through others throat. Ever visited youtube with firefox lately or google with IE? Download chrome everywhere. Everyone is entitled to some publicity but does it really need a yellow background?
I thought Google was a cool company.
Now I think Google is a big company as 'evil' as MS.
Having said that I think it's time for some new reg icons.
If they really want to sell that many they will have to do something on their price:
http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4-/10674553/Apple-iPhone-3G-S-32GB-Sim-Free-Unlocked-3-0-Megapixel-Mobile-Phone/Product.html
Me myself I won't pay more than spend more than 200 euro, maybe 300 if it's real nice, on a mobile.
I also have 10+ years experience in C++, quite a bit harder than Java, and saw some pretty horrible code. Making a language harder doesn't prevent programmers to abuse it. Where did you get that notion? Ever heard of COM?
I played with PHP for a few months and saw as much clean code as ugly code.
It's just different. One's a scripting language the other's strongly typed language. You can create shite with both.
"Have you actually used it? And used a decent PHP framework like Zend Framework.
If you've used both in anger as I have I think you'll find that .NET is bloated, unmaintainable and non-portable."
Well I did. And I like them both.If I had to chose I'd choose .NET cause it's strongly typed. But that's just me. I am not arrogant enough to say that what works best for me works best for everybody.
And I do marvel at certain PHP based applications like facebook and Drupal etc...
Of course both matter. Expert reviews are definitely necessary for expensive purchases. Opinions of friends counts too. User reviews are also helpful esp. if you want to see how fast stuff breaks down.
I found that a lot of experts don't take into account price. eg. the more expensive phones generally score higher even if you pay relatively way to much for what you get.
Oh and I never listen to the guy in the shop and never trust a single site. Sorry.
" DON'T BUY A HOUSE NEAR AN AIRPORT."
So naive. We bought a house near work, so we don't have to commute too far.
When we bought it there was no air traffic over our house but one year later there was due to an increased number of planes and a spreading the noise action plan of the government.
I think this reaction is more demonstrative of the problem.
" I don't think it's for the individual on the ground to 'shut up' and have their health damaged because increasing numbers of people want a long weekend in Valencia 12 times a year."
"No! I strenuously object to the godawful concept that more people automatically means more pollution. Modernity and technology are the drivers. New York with eight million people in it is FAR cleaner (and with less crowded living conditions) than New York when it had one million people. "
Valid point but that's a long term effect. Short term effect is that if you buy a baby you pollute more. Pampers anyone.
Now don't get me wrong It would be godawful to not save lives or allow people to have kids I just think that it doesn't hurt to give more incentive to the industry to come up with cleaner technology. But best to sign out here before someone mentions the war in Iraq. ;)
I also value modernity and technology but I fear that it's the industry, or some rich capitalists that hold the strings.
