multi-core architecture

The Inmos transputer was probably the first microprocessor design for large scale multi-core systems: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INMOS_Transputer and this quote: "In fact, the most powerful supercomputers in the world, based on designs from Columbia University and marketed as IBM BlueGene, are nothing less or more than real-world incarnations of the transputer dream."

We are still waiting for a real world incarnation of the Inmos concurrent programming language Occam: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam_programming_language
