O2 buckles under 3G iPhone demand

Rob

Pboro

I think Mr Otway is a just bit peeved he didn't get in the queue earlier

O2 shop in peterborough were doing the paperwork and leave with it unactivated thing, i was only 4th in line so it didn't take long (although that little midget git off harry potter turned up when there was about 20 odd people in the queue and was let in before the shop even opened - and they let him buy 2!!!!)

Something about their network did crash as it was only about 5 minutes after the first lot of us had entered the shop before everyone was like o noes the gateway is down! queue lots of huffing and puffing and use of the word 'contingency' like it made them clever

Though I had to say they were all very pleasant, they brought us all orange juice, coffee and a bacon roll thing as we queued

Yes it's only an upgrade, but it you don't get one now you'll be waiting god knows how long, so I'm quite happy to get up an hour or so early to pick up a shiny new phone on my way to work, albeit one virtually identical to one i already have, plus the sooner I can sell my old one the better,

Rob

@ Mark Oswell

Man, that's utter rubbish you've been lied to, they don't give you a new SIM when you upgrade from a 2g iPhone, they give you an empty sim pack booklet thing, i don't know what's in it but i assume it's useless, you just swap you old sim over

iPhone apps hit the racks at the iTunes store

Rob

Yummy

hurrah I have a shiny new boxed sealed iPhone 3g in my pocket, now I just have to spend a da at work before I can go home and activate the thing, o2s network, quite predictably, crashed within minutes of opening, they were doing everything on paper

iPhone 3G to be in 'very short supply for weeks' - carrier

Rob

@Af

Yeah, but we all paid full price for the first one!! then we continued paying tariffs which wouldn't have looked out of place alongside a SUBSIDISED handset, we've done nothing but line o2's pockets, a free upgrade's the least they could do

Leak reveals Xbox 360 Pro debut due

Rob

Pro

Yep, Pro, it's a premium with HDMI.

Pro is used everywhere in equally ridiculous places, especially hardware, IE, I had a radeon 9800 pro, a 'professional' pc graphics card, they certainly exist, but the 9800 wasnt one, obviously, it was primarily for gaming

Rob

Play Doh Pro

that sounds good!

waiting for pro lego

O2 starts 3G iPhone stampede - and runs away

Rob

@Jasper

Tak and skoll are also the only swedish I know, I will have to visit norway next

Rob

No doubt the underlying OS has moved on, but my point is that isn't visible to the end user - so why bother, my n93 would complain about running out of memory or something equally stupid on a tri-daily basis, far more than the 6600 ever did, yet this is a revised version or the same OS, and they certainly haven't bothered with working on the UI so what HAVE they done??, this is aimed more at nokia than symbian, as symbian have done the work to improve the underlying OS (either not doing very good job, or nokia not doing a good job making it work on their hardware)

Rob

all you haters

stop with your hating, the iphone rocks, in case you didn't know, I certainly won't be bothering with another nokia until they try something new, n95 has same ui as the nokia 6600 i had years ago! what are they changing other than the plastic the thing's in?

Rob

great

I was on that crap site at 8.20 this morning, i got their stupid codes and put them in but would always just end up back at the first form, I have no 'order' codes, just 'upgrade' codes,

the woman on the phone told me that if I put the upgrade code in then it should be fine, that's obviously crap and now people ordering at 1 have got confirmations, yet someone who has filled everything out at half 8 this morning hasn't

first come first served my colon, o2 once again prove they're a shambles, and if this doesn't get sorted out I'll just jailbreak my 2g iphone and go elsewhere, I'm sick of this sort of $h!7 from o2 as it is

Rob

great

that should be 'unlock' and not 'jailbreak' im so annoyed I've even screwed something as simple as that up.

Boozers rejoice - it's the USB wine tap!

Rob
Paris Hilton

DOH

There was me thinking you attached a bottle of wine to it, and it served as a somewhat pointless powered pump, but it's actually even more useless

serves about as much a purpose as paris

Google a broken hell for five-year-olds

Rob

thing is

we're expected to pay for MS stuff, generally not so for google, I can put up with some random bugs in a FREE service, but MS apps are well expensive, yet always revised, and still full of bugs

Xbox 360 owners tougher than PS3 fans - survey

Rob

Rent

wouldn't be as expensive if you had a friend to split it with..!

just a suggestion.

I live with my mate, have a 360, ps3, and a wii, use the 360 the most by far, sony need to get some games out soon or i'm gonna sell the thing (just like im doing with the wii as soon as I can be bothered)

Nokia grabs control of Symbian - then gives it away

Rob

Android

how is android easier to program for when it isn't even finished yet? I'll be sticking with my iphone, nokias UI has been naff for years, i doubt this'll change anything

MS bashes Gay(wood) Xbox Live gamer

Rob

My mate

had "yougay sodd" as his gamertag for ages and never heard anything, he's not online now though so I don't know if they expire or anything,

Rob

names

also, a girl at our college (a few years ago now) was called Jenny Taylor, many people took a lot longer to get it than i did,

Nokia says no plan to switch phones to Linux

Rob

fair enough

Yeah I take your point,, I just assumed that the GUI is part and parcel with s60,, I've only seen it on various nokias, always looking the same, I certainly would have expected nokia to have put a bit more effort into refining it (or preferably a complete overhaul or a few)

Rob

symbian

symbian is my main problem with nokias, i've had a fair few over the years but they don't really seem to have changed as they still run crappy old symbian, fair enough, im sure there have been some changes to it but using my girlfriends N95 or my old N93, seemed to be exactly the same as the nokia 6600 i had years ago! i dont pay or "upgrade" to have a different shaped plastic case and the same stuff underneath,

got an iphone now which poos in symbians face, you might not agree, pfft [shrugs]

PS3 update fails to fix Grand Theft Auto IV woes

Rob

loading....

I've had a problem with it staying on the loading screen (where it just says the mission name in the corner) it doesn't lock up exactly but it just looks like its loading .. .. forever, I assume this isn't the problem everyones moaning about as simply disconnecting from PSN or unplugging the ethernet cable fixes it

Supermarket goes hi-tech to stop kids buying booze and cigs

Rob
Thumb Down

so

does it actually try to tell the age by their facial features or does it just look them up on this database, because no under 18-year old could happen to know the cashier, who could then give them the thumbs up, marking them on the system as over 18, could they?

SMS costs more than using Hubble Space Telescope

Rob

sms

are a con, I have free email and data with my phone, why should I then have a limit or further charges for sending poxy little 160 char message? I can send emails of unlimited size with pictures attached for nothing?! how does sms cost them more to provide? its simply a rip off they know they can get away with over and over and over again because 10p seems like a fairly small amount to pay for a convenience

Son of 419 victim contacts El Reg

Rob
Happy

yep

either a 419 or really rather funny, seriously, who believes this crap, actually my mate fell for something considerably less serious, but just as blatently obvious, he was selling a phone on ebay and received an email from someone saying 'cancel the auction and we'll settle outside, this is normal ebay procedure' the idiot did just that

then he received an email which looked like it was from paypal, saying 'give us a tracking number to show its been posted and we'll release the funds'

being the utterly IT illiterate nonce-face he is, he didn't pay any attention to the actual address/server the message was from, and instead just looked at what was in the header / what the sender filled their name in as (i assume everyone on here knows the difference)

as soon as i looked at it i was like 'well thats not from pay pal you fool'

long story short, he sent his phone to NIGERIA!! before he'd received any money, obviously ebay didn't give a frig as they didn't sell it over ebay, I thought the whole thing was hilarious

Vista security credentials tarnished in malware survey

Rob

Win2k

Win2k was my favourite, it never mucked about like the others have, xp was alright but vista is just horrible I don't know why i ever bothered installing it, You do a dual boot with xp and all you end up with is an awful awful mess of access rights, great, so straight after a clean install I don't have priviledges to write a file to my own desktop?!? or to change ID3 tags of files in my music folder?!?!? when I only have a single, admin account ?! what a f**king state

Nvidia paid the right amount for 3dfx, court affirms

Rob
Happy

Damn right

I still clearly remember opening my voodoo1 that christmas, sticking it in the slot [har har har] and spending the rest of the day marvelling at the turok demo and how SMOOTH all the textures in tomb raider looked now, those were the days, I hate to think what it'd look like to me now, but im my memory it looked GREAT!!!

Dope-crazed Canadians sledgehammer iPhone

Rob

yeah!!

cos if you hate apple and the iphone, nothing says F*** YOU like going out and BUYING ONE, and then destroying it! So you don't even get any use out of the thing you've just PAID FOR, man, these guys must be getting some good shit

GTA IV PS3 fights off resolution woes in the UK

Rob

hmm

I didnt actually see any arguing..

Rob
Gates Horns

blurry

Looks lower res than 720 on my 360!! I've got a pretty big (50") but only 720p native tv, its glaringly obvious when games are scaled up (like cod4 halo3 pgr3) and this is the worst I've seen for it, stuff in the distance looks awfully aliased AND blurred!! Still a great game though

so long dude

cheers for the melting walls, malteaser headed monster, the meaning of life (I forgot to write it down) the temporary inability to understand a word of English, and being stuck in a park all frickin day walking round in circles wondering if I'll ever recover, (always did)

Radiohead diss freetards

Rob

indeed

higher bitrate would have been nice, I too paid for in rainbows, I think about 5 or 6 quid! I've only listened to it a few times, its no OK Computer is it? (Yes I know at least they're not sticking to the same formula but unfortunately their direction leaves me increasingly cold) I bought Ghosts too, which I was much more impressed with (higher quality, well produced, different pics embedded in the files, I thought was a nice touch, made the whole thing feel more cohesive, , £2.50!) unfortunately though the first few tracks were very promising, toward the end it starts to sound like they've been stuck in that studio for a bit too long and just want to get it over with, so they've just stuck any old loops with some distorted old arpeggiated synth through a vocoder

Spyware targets frustrated GTA IV gamers

Music biz proposes 'iPod tax' in return for format-shift freedom

Rob

utter crap

what a load of rubbish, I thought you were paying for a license for the music, not a licesnse for that specific cd, next they'll propose we're charged for every song we can remember as it's been duplicated within the neurons in our brains

The iPhone learns to read

Rob

mmm yes

such an important feature that no one mentioned it was missing until this guy made it, i can't say I lost any sleep over it, then again I don't whinge like a little bitch about it being too expensive not 3g and lacking a 100 megapixel camera I'd never use

Sony posts PS3 firmware 2.30

Rob

@ mark

no, you don't HAVE to install them to use the machine, but you do if you want to sign into psn and look at the store or play online, given that loads of people on here moan about things they actually don't really know much about (ahem, iPhone) I reserve the right to have a moan about a machine I spent >£400 quid on

Rob

@ ac

I assume as you call that guy a 360 fanboy you don't own one, if you did you'd probably be aware that the 360 handles media a hell of a lot better than the ps3 currently does, ps3 plays ~40% of my shared videos, whereas my 360 plays a good 90% of it

Rob

COD 4

hate to exacerbate the ps3 vs 360 undertones but actually cod4 is better on the 360, my mate brought it over for the ps3 and I loaded mine up on the 360, after switching between the two a couple of times it was glaringly obvious that the textures on the ps3 just didn't look as good as they did on the 360, especially along the ground where the ps3 reminded me of the good old days of bilinear filtering

Rob

updates

the frequency of these updates does my bloody head in, every time i turn the thing on i have to spend half an hour downloading and installing updates, by which time I can't really be bothered to play anything anymore

Hacker blasts Mac clone maker's licence 'violation'

Jango

Jango, have you ever used a mac or do you just spout your misinformed nonsense as some kind of justification for not understanding what they're all about

(New) dirt-cheap bots attack Hotmail Captchas

Rob

Captchas

I hate this frickin things, i have no problem with them if they are actually legible to a human being, but I recently went to post a comment on some site, I tried, unsuccessfully, about 30 times to get their stupid stupid stupid captchas right in order to post my single comment and eventually I gave up, it wasn't even that difficult to read, I don't see what other meaning could have possibly been hidden within there, but it certainly didn't want whatever my eyes and brain were reporting as being there, why can't there just be a simple logical question that anyone could answer but a machine couldn't,

Guitar maker Gibson thrashes out more robo-axes

Rob

Synth

Yeah, if you need to change tunings something along the lines of a VG8 and MIDI pickup are the way to go, then you can change tunings at the press of a pedal, with no waiting for strings to be re-tuned, no chance of them breaking through doing so and no differences in string tension (ever tuned a set of .8's down to drop c/b??, it doesn't work...)

Rob

sg

"Recent models of the Gibson SG Special represent a value oriented model in their product line-up. Typically, it does not include the stylized neck binding of other models, or mother-of-pearl, trapezoid fret inlays. The wraparound stoptail bridge has been replaced with Gibson's standard Tune-O-Matic arrangement on the Classic and Special reissues, while the reissue of the Junior retains the original one-piece bridge."

There isn't anything 'not proper' about an 'sg' ? what about an epiphone sg? yeah the pickups in that are gonna be hot as hell!! (perhaps when the wiring goes wrong?) Just because a guitar is a particular shape or is a 'strat' or an 'sg' or a 'les paul' doesn't mean anything, the more you pay, the better it is

Rob

tuning while playing

it seemed pretty bizarre to me for it to tune while you're playing it, but this bit seemed to indicate just that

"This ensures each string always hits the correct note – no matter how bad the guitarist’s playing is."

I've heard plenty of "guitarists" who can make their perfectly tuned guitars sound terrible, so this kind of mechanical autotune seemed to be the only way to guarantee a "correct" note, though that obviously depends what note they've fretted, and wont improve their timing, or intonation on another guitar, I think if it did do this it'd ultimately make you a far WORSE player,

Rob
Paris Hilton

£1k

£1k is about the starting price for a proper guitar

paris, she's sticking with a hohner rockwood

Rob

I should think

a piano would actually be easier to do as the strings don't change pitch, it sounds like this guitar adjusts the tuning as you play it, which I'd be very interested in giving a go, I'm very intrigued as to how it sounds when you bend a note, what if you want a little 1/4 tone bend?

Aussies to get 3G iPhone in June... and unlocked?

Nokia confirms 'iPhone killer' handset in pipeline

Rob

my old phone

was an n93, what a load of crap it was too, I certainly wouldn't subject myself to S60, not even for free, hence why I ended up just buying an iphone since I knew it would do what it says it does, and not claim every feature under the sun and deliver barely any of them

Now all we need

is some kind of facebook add-in thing which will automatically guage and make available ALL individuals 'sluttiness' ratings, list them all in order of sluttiness, then proximity to whoever is searching, and perhaps an instant map print out with directions to their house, providing they've clicked a button and accepted your request for a bit of a beasting. Maybe you could also be matched by the STDs you share too
