The problem with the xbox , is that its made by microsoft. They do not like competition in any area. You dont see Sony having a price war with Samsung over tvs.

Whilst a price drop may seem good in the short term. Long term when m$ have total control over everything electronic, things wont be so cheap then.

(Note not that Sony are that much better - but M$ are as bad as news corp)

Sparking the ps3/xbox/wii debate. This is why I hate xbots. MS are far far far more evil than sony. MS are halliburton part 2. Regardless of how good/bad the box is - I hate M$. My friend at work used to think like this , he was an apple fan. Now he has an xbox he is converted to a Bill Gates fan.

iphone without itunes

I run linux - Im tempted to buy an 2G iphone from a friend (i like the screen) as he is getting 3G (typical apple fanboy - anything made by jobs he has to have).

Anyway - Im looking forwards to trying to get it work without iTunes.....

Safety increase

Is simple.

It is due to the increased price of petrol. People do not drive as much or as fast.

Apart from the upgrade side (which you can do with the HDD and rumors for RAM) - you can always install linux on a ps3 and have office programs - or in my case mythtv frontend.

Films are for blu ray. They will stay that way. (until piracy/downloads take over in 5-10 yrs).

What you are proposing is just a data disk. With cheap memory and HDD - mainline consumers dont need it - just another confusing tech for them. For the geeks - there may be a niche.

I bought a PS3 just so I didn't buy a MS product. Got burned when I bought a pocket pc thinking it didn't need a desktop computer running windows.

Was thinking of getting a PSP - but this has just made it a no no.

I run linux - not windows. It will stay that way.

Higher price and still a crap screen

My little eeePC is pretty neat. The only thing bad about it is the small screen. I was hoping the new version would be 1024x768 min , but no.

Some people see ubuntu and linux/open source as being inferior because it is free. They think the more you pay for something the better it is.

Worried about your applications? They wont run on new versions of windows at some point in the future either vista, 7 or the next.

Worried about your users? They will have to get used to new windows.

Worried about upgrade cost? Why - existing PCs will be fine.

Worried about exoctic hardware? Yes , this is a serious issue. By some cheap chineese stuff to replace it. Not ideal, but nothing ever is.

Worried about future upgrades? No, you should be excited. Windows upgrades bring nothing. Linux upgrades usually bring better software.

According to a computer games site - there is a rumor flying round that MS are releasing a new xbox in 2009.

This features a quad core cpu , 1TB hdd , new cpu/gpu combo die and BLU RAY - all in a fat wii shaped box.

@Stewart - XBox has a std 1 year warranty and a 3 year warranty for certain general hardware failures which are indicated by three flashing red lights on the console.

So a firmware update which breaks your hard drive is not covered.

As long as the underlying system is stable and secure, for me it is all about the applications.

If android can use even 10% the linux / open source apps out there today - then we will be in for some fun. (This is not 1998 when open source apps were crap).

DVD runs faster on the edge of the disk , and slower in center.

BR - runs the SAME speed all the way through (CLV).

But remember , there is only going to be a couple of gig that runs faster than 50g of BR.
