Re: Look at the profit...
What you seem to forget is, that gamers on Xbox Live are used to pay for 27-33 quid for "Gold" (anyone that pays more needs to learn how to use the internet).
For all of the previous generation, Sony fanboys spent their time trowing the fact that online multiplayer gaming was free on the PS3. It isn't now. The cheapest I could find is £42.99. PS+ is still better value than Gold, but many people I know that have PS3s only had it for the free multiplayer. These are the kind of people that Sony will struggle to make money out of them.
I know at least three people that got a nice nasty surprise with their PS4s when they found out about the paid multiplayer.
Microsoft in the long run will maintain their user base, and Sony will struggle to keep theirs. This generation is Microsoft's to lose.
Nokia and WP7.
This review is going to make many people quite upset. Are you actually saying that a Nokia with WP7 is a good idea? What about all the doomsayers that predicted a quick and swift death to both?
I have been a WP7 user since December, I don't believe that I have seen more than 10 people with one, most people I know with one are people on Xbox Live but, this time, I believe it is going to explode. Give it an year or so, and the platform will become mainstream.
Well done to Nokia and Microsoft for the gamble

"On the PS3 front, my wife and I both have PS3's in our bedrooms"...
Not only you have different bedrooms, you play PS3 separatelly... Dude, you and your missus need some serious counselling.
Do you even know what you are talking about?
When you download a Xbox Live Arcade or DLC, any account on that console can use that content. Buy or loan an xbox before you comment about something that you don't know.
... you people could just find a job that paid well (mine does, hehe) and cough up the subscription. Last time I checked, most jobs in IT paid just about enough for a person to live well. If you are in IT and yours doesn't, then you are working for the wrong company. So, stop moaning about Sky's subscriptions, which are value for money in these capitalistic times, or go watch Freeview/Freesat or bugger off.
I have played both games already. You call Blur bland, cheap, etc. No, it is more fun. The AI in S/S is extremely cheap, the helicopter races are just downright stupid and most races you'll be playing over and over again hoping for a lucky break. Now Blur: Career mode is excellent and challenging without being cheap, when you win a race is because you are good and not because you caught a lucky break after 20 or so tries and the only, not only is well populated but the ranking system is just right and experience is absolutely brilliant.
Here, that is my two cents.
Missing the whole point of gamerscore.
I can see that most of the comments are from people who seem to despise both gamerscore and people that play for gamerscore.
Of course they do, that is their right.
Now, I am 33, I have a family and a life, a job, I am not a fan-tard but I like playing for achievements. Does this fact make me a bad person? Of course not, but some some of you see gamerscore whores and start insulting.
I have manged to get to 91,000 and yes, I will go to the end of the world to protect my XBL login details. I found this article very informative and interesting. Thank you, Register.
P.S. Is it required for people that insult gamerscore whores to have poor spelling and grammatical skills?
I love my xbox but...
This really is taking things a bit too far. It is just giving people a reason not to buy their hardware and move to PS3. Surely a bad business move?
It will not affect me but there are 1000's of people that use "unauthorized" 2GB memory sticks that will be affected and they will be forced to pay over the odds for and official, extremely expensive, 512mb which is useless.
Those people that have Arcades are being told: Buy our expensive HDD's or move. Guess some, if not most, will move.
Clearly you are a fanboy. Now go and play with your PS3 and download free HD movies which I bet there are plenty of them on PS network.
I still think that the whole point of a games console is to play games, if I want a BR player, I'll buy a BR player. Bet you don't play many games, do you Mark? Do you, Mark?
The movies at £5 a pop as you say are there as a convenience, no one's forced to buy them.
The £40 (£30 on eBay or even cheaper if you are wise) are money very well spent as the on-line experience is second to none, after all you get what you pay for.
£80 for a HDD? Once again you are wrong my friend. Go on ebay and 50-60 quid is what you are looking at.
An Elite with a 120GB costs £200 nowadays which is excellent value as a games console with all the trimmings. Don't give me your wi-fi bullshit please as I don't care as many people's consoles are not far away from the router. ISP didn't give you a free router? Idiot, learn to shop around.
I have a cheap Vista H. Premium running 2GB ram. As soon as I bought it, I formated the whole of the HDD, reinstaled Vista off the DVD and installed only the software I need, no dodgy stuff for me...
That was almost 2 years ago. Never had any problems with it as there are no crapware programs, no AV shit, only use AVG free and it works like a dream, even better than XP.
For all the Linux apologists, you may be asble to work with it but, for the general public, it is a pain in the ass to work with.
<leaves the room quietly>
... I am selling my PS3 on ebay (no link, don't want to get banned) at the moment and my 360 gets used every day! lol
If I want to watch movies, I buy a dvd player, if I want to play games, I buy a 360. Simple.
I would never buy a 250 quid console because of one game, doesn't mather how much money I have.
The King is dead...
... long live the King!
Twice as good as the the PS2 with games twice as good, it really never fulfilled its potential.
Still, it was a good springboard for the 360 and generation leadership. No, the Wii is not current generation, is a Cube with fancy controllers, it belongs to the last generation.
Downloaded it, played a few games already, no lag whatsoever (other than the ones on certain games, which I know are there), no problems so far *knock knock knock* and I quite like how it looks.
Those that had problems are either lying PS3 fanboys or idiots that tried to remove the HDD while the update was installing/downloading. For them, I have no simpathy at all.
Xbox 360 = Gaming satisfaction. PS3 = Film lover wannabe gamer...
P.S. NFS Undercover actually better on the 360 than on PS3, just don't tell them.
What is the big deal?
It is an ID card, just like your Driver's License or your Passport. Many many countries use ID cards and people there aren't complaining all the time, they just take it as a mather of fact.
Mine's the one with yellowish portuguese one.
What about Gateway?
I've got a Tesco bought Gateway running Vista H Premium and it is the most reliable of all the laptops I've had. Compaq? A joke, kept going back to PC World. Dell? Luckily was a compny one, otherwise I'd have broken it myself. Ee? Lasted a week then had to return it, the bloke at PC World didn't know what was wrong with it.
So my opinion is: Buy a cheap laptop at Tesco's and it will last forever.
/better run away now...
I am a Xbox 360 fanboy but...
... even I realize this is BS. Unless they only sent a few thousand over to Japan, I can't see them selling enough to actually run out.
Is MS now using Nintendo's tactic? Pretendind there's a shortage to boost sales deep into PS3 territory? They will be lucky!
/walks out in disgust...
A fool and...
... its money are easily parted.
/laughs so hard it hurts
@AC (14:48 GMT)
Format the HDD??? Lose all your save games? You have to be joking, otherwise you just gave the best ever reason NOT to own a PS3. Just imagine, all those hours on Forza2 and GTA IV down the drain. I'd rather have a RRoD every couple of months (more time with the missus, hehe).
Mine's the one with the proprietary, expensive, easily deatachable hard drive.
Street machines (yes, they are on the street, and no, no yobs try to break them down) in Germany can only sell if you insert an authorised debit/credit card and from what I hear, the system actually works.
Surely this is a ploy by the El Reg to get as many comments as possible on a article?
BTW, I am an Xbox 360 owner and I wouldn't swap it with a PS3 even if Sony paid me (ok, maybe I would take the money and put it on eBay...).
Paid Xbox Live, "free" PSN...
I'd rather pay for Xbox Live and have a proper, advertisement-free in-game experience (hear me, EA and Codemasters?) than to have a so-called free PSN where you'll be bombarded with ads... Xbox Live 1, PSN 0.
I've been playing violent games since what? 1987 (I was 10 then, my parents didn't know...) and yet, I haven't had the need to kill, maim, dismember, head-shoot, etc anyone.
Another useless study for the PC brigade.
Mine's the one with the GTA IV copy inside.
Clearly you are a PS3 fan boy and or you are an idiot. I have a 360 and it has RRoD'ed on me, bloody incovenience, but it was free deliveries all around from UPS to and from Havant, and it came back without me paying a cent, with an extra Live month thrown in (4 quid) and a nice sorry letter. I agree that having it away for about two weeks is not good and unacceptable, but when I bought my Xbox I was aware of its problems but all I wanted was a good games' machine with reasonably good games to go with, not a do-it-all thing that will play blu-ray or access the internet (there are PC's, remember?) and Blu-ray discs are just too expensive (I'm still building a DVD library, no way I'm going to change to another format now).
PS3? Never for me, s***e controller, worst games. Wii? For the kids. Xbox 360? All night sessions. Thanks.
Mine's the one with the GTA IV copy in it.
The controller side of it, seems to be a neglected area, the PS3's absolutly crap and useless and it is the single reason why I chose the 360, but the rest holds true any time.
Ok, we have a RRoD issue, it is a bloody inconvenience being without it for a week (or two) while it is on holiday in Havant, but, for some reason, it always feels good to have it back and get it going again!
Sue me because I love the 360.
@ Sean Charles
Sorry to be out of topic, but you are an idiot.
UK politicians corrupt?
Any African, Latin-American, Asian country will beat UK politicians hands down in the corruption stakes. UK politicians are quite good, even compared with the rest of Europe.
Here, got it out of my chest.
The Wi-Fi on my N95 is fine, thank you, and the battery life (after the software update, I admit) is more than adequate, 2-3 says between charges, with a 4GB memory card, I have more than enough space for a few albums, picture takem with my, ahem, 5 megapixel camera, maps for my GPS (works like a dream, you should try sometime)...
