Will all those fookers who forever find in necessary to moan about "rip-off Britain", ID cards, Missing CDs, IR35, Police, Royal Family, The Government, "erosion of freedom", RIPA, the EU, etc, etc, please sod off and live somewhere else ASAP.
session id precision?
i was working at a major uk retail bank when they first rolled out internet banking. An element of the session id was a time stamp and because the precision was too low, if two users logged on at more or less the same time they got the same session and saw the other's details. I think the incident actually made news at 10. Oh how we laughed!
... Work on the iphone?
... it should be a legal requirement for all PC hardware suppliers to supply the full range of their hardware without any OS installed at all. They should also have to supply them at a price = (hardware with OS price - OEM OS license cost).
Maybe this is something useful that the EU could enforce?
Then people would have the feedom to put whatever OS they wanted on their PCs without paying for a pre-installed OS they didn't want.
To make it fair for the hardware suppliers, they would only have to provide support for hardware faults, not OS / Driver issues.
PS. I put Ubuntu 7.10 on my Dell Latitude D820 and everything just works - including bluetooth which I actually do use :o)
tracking phones in UK
there's at least one service for remotely tracking phones over the web in the UK http://www.mobilelocate.co.uk
Phil doesn't say he reported the phone lost / stolen - just that the insurance "will pay the remainder of your contract off if you decide to cancel before the term is up" ie, it's a perk of the insurance that it gives you a contract get-out option.
Having said that, false reports of mobile phone thefts do skew the crime statistics quite significantly - even fueling the current "rampant Gun crime" statistics. A good proportion of the reported "gun crimes" are as a result of the following scenario...
Oik: Damn, this phone's 3 months old and it's well out of date, I wanna new one. I know, I'll say it's been nicked.
(on phone to insurance provider fonefarm monkey)
Oik: Me phone's bin nicked, can I have a new one?
Monkey: Oh, your phone's been nicked has it? What's your crime reference number from the police?
(Oik hangs up on monkey)
Oik: Damn, gotta report it to the cops. Oh well, I'll spin 'em a line...
(at the cop-shop)
Oik: I need to report my phone's bin nicked.
PC: I need to take some details. How did it happen?
Oik: erm, this bloke mugged me in the street.
PC: Oh, I see, did he threaten you or anything?
Oik: err, yeah, he pulled a gun on me, I had to hand it over otherwise he'd have killed me.
Next thing you know, Daily Mail headline: Gun Crime Out Of Control
you obviously aint seen a bunch of mechanics having a punch-up over Stanley vs Snapon spanners. Gets very messy, blood and snot flying everywhere...
Can your code monkies...
... deploy this as a handy WebApp for my iPhone please?
Yep, come to think of it, you're right - we're all doomed.
Everyone's chip and pin cards have been cloned and we're all getting ripped off every day of the week.
Same thing will happen with the ID cards, we'll all end up in prison when our identities have been stolen.
Note to self: Stop posting on El Reg, it's a waste of time.
