Can Windows Phone 7 help Microsoft come from behind?

i must disagree with the author

imo the usability/interface is terrible :( to me in general it feels rushed and half-thought out with only limited customisation possible. tends to happen when there no vision driving it.

Meego goes 3D

David Pickering
Alert

2d in 3d

htc sense ui is 3d (andriod and winmo) - uses opengl/lua - has been around for ages

and no, imo a 3d interface for phones is a stupid idea if they expect you to navigate it with just your finger - i have yet to see a compelling 3d interface for any operating system tbh - the HCI (input mostly) just isnt there.

i do like meego though.

iPhone 4 developers get software update, but will it fix death grip?

David Pickering

hmm

if the code that draws the bars is also responsible for managing the phones network state i would be shocked. that is horrific software design. the system would already know the percentage left in the battery, the code that draws the bars should just draw the bars and nothing else. if the update is just changing how the bars are drawn this is entirely cosmetic and wont affect calls being dropped etc at all.

if the update adds specific logic to the system that turnsoff the antennas etc given certain situation, that might alleviate the problem but not eliminate it.

Jobs Horns

MS just need some decent ui ppl

oh dear - if lack of customisability is what microsoft sees as a good thing in apple products then the future will be very bland and monotone.

this is just my take but do they think customisability hampers adoption because people are too stupid to correctly use customisation tools? or is it just a quick corner-cutter in terms of development time.

i cant seriously beleive for a second they think less is more? what sort of reality distortion feilds is being felt at redmond?

i have actually used this icon workshop thing in the past and tbh i found it a bit clunky - i have since moved on to using the gimp to make all of my icons - its a very powerful tool that can read/write icon files - by far the best overlooked option imo.

Mozilla plots Firefox interface overhaul

David Pickering
FAIL

ui might look old but it is functionally sound imo

gotta disagree strongly on one point - firefox has a "tall and bulky UI footprint" - what a load of crap.

firefoxes ui is fantastically customisable - it knocks spots off everything else in terms of flexibility imo. just look at internot exploders foolbar - you cant change the size of the buttons or where theyre placed on the toolbar - you cant have the address bar or the menu bar share their 'bands' with anything else, resulting in needlessly wasted screen space (which is made worse the wider your monitor is). and what the hell is with not being able to put the menu bar (file, edit etc) _above_ the navigation bar? utter rubbish.

i only mention this because in windows7 they have only gone and put this hideous unconfigurable toolbar interface thing into the bloody windows file explorer. and you cant get rid of it.

ill take firefoxes ui over anything else any day TBQFH.

(p.s. sorry this turned into an internot exploder bash :))

wintards vs crapple fanbois - the clashses in the comments section are getting a little predictable now tbh! (hehe though i have in the past contributed to the nonsense with a rather malevolent intent ;)

at the end of the day i dont think these companies and the crap they produce can really be compared - neither is better than the other - as their target audiences, at least to me, seem to be at either end of some sort of tard spectrum.

get over it, move on - imo if you place any personal investment/interest in either company then you are a mug. get a life.

Windows Mobile 7 feature details mined

David Pickering

ja

ive been using 6.5 on my raphael for over a month now - imo its not much different than 6.1 - only its got a new home screen and you can drag the contents of certain window controls around with your finger instead of having to try and pick at those crappy scrollbars. a few tab-based dialogs look a bit different too - other than that i cant think of much else that has changed from 6.1 - however, 6.5 is still a big improvement, even though ive got htcs manilla2.1 plastered all over my device so i rarely have to interface with windows directly anyway, though titanium (the new home screen) does look rather nice.

as for video calling though - wtf? ive been able to hold video calls on this device ever sice i got it - even on wm6.0 - so im not quite getting that part of the article.. unless you mean its just baked into the OS rather than as a third party app or smt (in which case that to me isnt exactly profound).

anyway - mines the one with the huge scorch mark where the pocket used to be

HTC smartphones vulnerable to Bluetooth file sniffing

David Pickering
Thumb Down

suprised?

don't expect to hear anything useful back from htc ever on this tbh (well, maybe some lip service) - existing devices with this problem will _never_ be fixed - only devices that haven't yet come out will have the required patch - this is how htc work - once you've bought one of their f*ck-off expensive handsets they stick 2 fingers up at you and tell you to go swivel (if they bother responding at all) when you ask for some support (or they'll lie to you about graphics drivers etc).

BOO.
