@Shagbag Re: beyond a joke
No wants this OS??
"making Windows Phone the fastest growing OS sequentially."

Re: So Fugly it's mother would feed it with a catapult
except for: http://blogs.wsj.com/tech-europe/2013/03/21/windows-phone-8-nominated-for-design-of-the-year/
and other design awards it has won.
You can keep you vanilla anti-Ms crap to yourself. Its quite boring.
@James O'Shea
because they are doing well through other channels... Samsun is doing a great job without having Samsung stores...
Re: Translation from BS to normal speech...
did anyone read how WP market share has doubled?

Re: oh good
What exactly makes it shit? I hear a lot of negative stuff about it, but what does it not do that is should do? What is the bar for mediocre and what is missing from the surface RT to hit that bar?
So far a lot of smoke but no fire.
Can you cite a source?
I haven't heard response times for iDevices quoted before. Do you have a link to a credible source?
Re: chalk one for the good guys
"if Microsofts OS were more resilient" how do you prevent uneducated users from installing malware? You can go the walled garden approach such as the surface RT but then people complain that it is not an open platform....
Re: Not so bad
Not to mention screen specs, wireless charging, NFC, camera, OS.
What I don't get is why in reviews it is never mentioned how it takes less time to do everyday tasks in WP than in android or iOS. Reviews are always just a feature set comparison. the Smoked by windows phone series seems to be a pretty good indication that the things you do most are easier on WP.
Re: Not so bad
I agree. the 920 has a lot of good stuff
Re: No, this phone is WP8
@hplasm
how is it obsolete? How did you measure obsolescence?
Re: 7.x?
@jemna
How is it a featureless wasteland?
What does it say it can do and does not?
So much bad info out there.
Re: A bargain
@Manu: How did the boycott go?
Re: You all keep forgetting.
what Dana said...
Also remember that your own individual experiences will always be anecdotal. Meaning you should stop extrapolating the needs of an entire country off of your single data point of an experience.
Re: Shine going off your business?
*cough* surface pro *cough*
Look at her burn!!
oh wait... looks like windows and ms are doing fine..
Re: The Surface is an excellent tablet
Same here. The search and share charm make it sooo much easier to do common tasks. I can't for the life of me understand why MS marketing doesn't focus on how the common stuff is easier. The shit you do all day every day takes less effort.
Re: True innovation - and laziness?
you are just talkin' mess.
Why would you spend the resources to take it out especially is the actual server and desktop OS still need that code? Why would you spend the time and money to remove a scenario that you can only get to by screwing with the boot loader? What % of smart phone owners do that?
You my friend would make a terrible dev manager and or PM.
At some point
all this negativity towards MS will wind down.
MS is now one of the most ethical companies : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/17/microsoft-most-ethical-company_n_837003.html
And the make good kit like WP8 in the 920:http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/12/31/12-awards-the-nokia-lumia-920-won-in-2012/
and the surface / surface pro.
I don't like iPads but I don't run my mouth about how they suck because they are a well built device.
retina
Does this out do the iPad with the retina display?
Re: 200 percent
I get the sense that you don't have a lot of experience developing on WPF or WinRT. It scales just fine. Go create a winRT app and deploy to the simulator to test on different resolutions. I think you'll see that most win 8 apps will probably work just fine.
buzz word bingo
what the hell does that even mean. You just jammed a bunch of tech words you head one time to make it sounds like you had a legit idea.
"heat mapping with analytics "???? please create a working prototype
I like how you make this generalization about the one software company that patches its software faster and more regularly than any other software shop.
admit it. It's just hip to be negative and cynical about everything with the Reg community.
Re: Ms hate
I didn't mean to imply that its not ok to direct some hate. It was a genuine question as to why. I realize that genuine questions on the interWebz are hard to come by so I understand the confusion.
However I do have more genuine questions regarding some of your comments.
How exactly do the bamboozle "us" and why should I think their licensing is purposely misleading?
Data please...
Ms hate
Its weird that there is all this hate towards MS still. The anti trust stuff is long over. There is plenty of choice in the tech world. Why is it so vogue to hate that company?
@AnotherNetNarcissist Re: Yeah, I've got an issue with Android...
How so? are you referring to windows phone 7.5? It is still supported. you are getting 7.8. Why does "supported" mean to you?
Any the negativity continues
The El Reg crowd is a rather negative bunch. I can't recall an single article that's been met with positivity or enthusiasm or intellectual honesty.
Re: ballmer has to walk
that doesn't reconcile with Server and Tools division have double digit growth year over year
Re: ballmer has to walk
ballmer is actually fixing the mess gates created. He is kicking out the old guard such as Sinofsky. Read "breaking windows"
up vote for you sir.
From my surface RT
Don't be a troll
That typing lag issue was fixed ages ago. The update was already out by launch. I have a surface and its really fast and smooth. And my Lumia 920 is just as pleasant to use. You clearly are just like the HP exec. Just regurgitating crap you have skimmed from the equally uninform tech blog community.
Down votes for being positve
seems like negativity is the only currency worth using in this community.
no fake queues
that was a made up story based on assumption and bad info. The dude that wrote that article noticed that MS employees were inline to buy stuff as actual customers with their own money and assumed that they were paid to stand there. That's retarded just like your snarky comment :)
OMG!!
How did anyone discover Ctrl+V, Ctrl+C, Window+P, Alt+Tab?
Relax everything will be ok.
Re: wat
Good point. My thumb is pretty good at reversing direction. Not really that hard.
Metro version of visual studio anyone???
Just though of having to use Visual Studio with a touch based Metro UI.... The though of it made me punch 3 kittens in the face.
Re: He is right.
it is. But with such a legacy base I can't think of a way for that company to really do something different and also not ditch the massive ecosystem of normal windows products and code.
This is called the innovators dilemma I believe. I will be an interesting Christmas season to watch the tech industry fight it out.
Bought a surface...
And I find that on a tablet win 8 is really good. The learning curve is significant. But the consistency that you get within all Win8 apps is awesome. The contract approach to search / settings / sharing is very fluid and very fast. There are features that you can't get on other OSes. But it took me a while to start to become familiar with these feature and to get to a point where Win8 was a net benefit.
On my desktop with 4 monitors.... meh.
Re: ...always-on Skype...
How about:
New Poll Says 22% of Respondents will get a Windows Phone 8 device, tied with iPhone interest
http://www.mobilemag.com/2012/11/09/windows-phone8-and-iphone-interest-tied/
You can run VS2012 on win 7 just fine. Are you saying you want to develop Metro apps for win 7? that would not be possible with out a back port of WinRT
Re: Relevant to what?
yup...
an up vote for you sir.
Builds are important
In any agile shop Continuous Integration is going to critical to maintaining a healthy codebase. So the build it self is very critical. To do CI you need to build on every check-in and run all unit tests so you can reject the check in on any test failure. Effectively making broken builds a thing of the past. This reduces a huge amount of churn and expense. Any seasoned dev will know that the later you find a bug in the process the more expensive it gets.
If you're still doing old-style water-fall this won't be as important as you're probably still suffering through broken builds and regression test passes.
Re: Sexiest nun
yhatzee!
I'm buying a surface.
Quite excited to get it actually.
Flame suit on.
DELL 27" all in one
I played with one of those for a while. Seemed quite nice.
Re: It gets worse
@AC that article is crap. all conjecture no actual proof. And of course stores by MS are going to be busy. Home field advantage.
Re: In 12 months time
Probably one of the most reasonable comments leveled against the surface to date on the reg forums.
Has the author used one?
Sounds like the author has one and is speaking from a place of authority on the subject...
or maybe its just conjecture.
Re: surface shmurface
glad to know you're not speaking from a place of ignorance.
All ready on back order ;)
http://www.neowin.net/news/499-32-gb-surface-sells-out-backordered-for-three-weeks
I'm getting one.
Maybe two. I've used an RT and they are nice.
