Jobsian drones shackle gamer with 'lifetime' iPad ban

Tom Kelsall
Thumb Down

I bought an iPhone...

...but after seeing the hoops I have to jump through to make it work the way I like it best, and after seeing the ONLY product which Jobs allows it to properly synchronise with, and after realising that the only way to fill it with music is NOT drag and drop, it's synchronising....

He can go fuck his i<insert natty name here>. I want nothing more to do with iPads, iPhones, iPods, iMacs... you name it. Steve Jobs gets more headscrewed with each and every day and I will not buy another one of his Apple branded products. My "Upgrade" comes up on the 20th May - and I will be getting myself a Desire (anti-google privacy people PLEASE forgive me). Bring on the dragging and MP3 dropping. Bring on the wealth of calendar and email synchronisation options. Bring on the storage of documents and Other Files on my phone. Bring on the upgrading of my device with more memory when I feel like it. Bring on customising the display to my own desires. Bring on the choosing of literally billions of ringtones/SMS tones by simply selecting a sound file from the memory card. Bring on being able to buy as many or as few as I choose.

Apple (forgive the overdramatisation) are DEAD to me.

Android on an iPhone? There's an app for that

Tom Kelsall

I'm impressed with the work...

But what will it be able to do? Also, why can't we wipe apple's OS Install altogether and just have Android?

Omegle invites you to show world+Facebook your bewbs

I don't get how CEOP are helping...

...because most teenagers doing this are either (a) ENJOYING their "inappropriate interactions" online, or (b) naive enough to believe the identity of the person on the other end absolutely. A Panic Button would do NOTHING, because most teenagers won't see themselves as at risk even in the grossest of online chats/camconferences. If they didn't like it they would click the "X". What we need is for parents to take responsibility for what their kids do online and EDUCATE THEM.

eBayer sued for leaving negative feedback

Tom Kelsall

Just stick to the facts...

Say what happened, not what you think about it. People CAN read and there's nothing big or clever about making stuff up about someone. Instead of saying "has the ethics of a used car salesman" he should have said "Clock arrived in pieces and did not work. Refund very difficult to get. Unhappy experience for me overall." All factual or experienced by the buyer, who could have no possible way of knowing the seller's ethics.

I thought we weren't allowed to leave negative feedback for sellers any more anyway? I pulled my account ages ago when they stopped being a flea market and went all commercial.

Tories may scrap IR35 tax rules for contractors

Tom Kelsall
FAIL

Stopped?

How much tax avoidance did it stop? It brought in a grand total of £9.2m over ten years. Less than a million a year on average. The country spends more than that on coffee per DAY.

It's clearly a nonentity as far as raising money or stopping tax avoidance goes... all it's done is make life more difficult for hundredsof thousands of hard working families. I'm all for stopping tax avoidance; but let's have rules which are sensibly and thoughtfully written instead of this bureaucratic mess!

'Perpetual' software licence doesn't last forever, rules court

Tom Kelsall
WTF?

What I don't get is...

...that everyone above seems to be in broad agreement with my first post, and yet someone silently "disliked" it. Don't hide - come out and tell us what you found so objectionable about what I wrote.

Tom Kelsall

The Law needs...

very specific interpretation of EVERY WORD in a Contract - but every clause needs to be read in light of every other clause. Because they didn't set out new "Termination Clauses", the old ones were in effect.

So - it's nothing to do with using fancy words, it's to do with Lawyers writing a sloppy contract variation agreement. They should have specified that because Clause 11 said that this was a perpetual agreement it was not capable of being terminated by either party. (Had it only specified one party it would have been an unfair clause and therefore unenforceable).

@Ken Hagan

Yeah. But we're not talking about a single particle, are we? We're talking about several billion of them in a stream travelling at nearly the speed of light. I don't, therefore, think you're being entirely fair.

RE: aircraft carriers - at 8-12 knots an aircraft carrier takes several football-pitch lengths to stop using its own engines. If one hit something solid at that speed the damage would be very, very serious.

We all KNEW this. But try to tell it to Facebook... it's like talking to a particularly unresponsive wall. I would kill for an app-vetting process in their system... I don't use apps AT ALL but I still get bombarded with shit on my wall from apps which other people think I might like. FFS.

Exiled iPhone Wi-Fi apps move to Cydia

Tom Kelsall
Stop

@seandiggity

with one BIG proviso - I've been told that the Mobile Substrate stuff isn't available on RockApp and will never be... which makes it far less useful. I'll give you that it's quicker and nicer to use.

Tom Kelsall
FAIL

Banning developers...

Banning developers from using Apple Tools to develop Apps for Cydia is like punishing a habitual unlicensed driver from driving... it has absolutely no effect on those peoples' activities. It's effectively an underground movement which will continue WHATEVER edicts, decrees, proscriptions and iLaws Apple issue.

Apple is suing HTC

Tom Kelsall

I've said it before...

Similar problems will end up with similar solutions. Humans' design won't be changing anytime soon, and the same HCI factors will influence GUI design. That being the case, Apple's patents on things like "MultiTouch" should be rescinded as a development of publicly available science rather than commercial innovation. The science of Human/Computer Interaction is pretty well understood and developing all the time - from lots of different directions.

OpenOffice 3.2 - now with less Microsoft envy

Tom Kelsall
Unhappy

Errrm.... hold on a second...

Have I missed something here? Didn't Microsoft, through some dodgy dealings or other, get their XML document format voted in as the international document format standard? In which case why hasn't the format been released into the wild so that people like OOO don't HAVE to reverse engineer it? Weren't they up against OOO's ODF format which is already open?

I'm confused.

New music file aims to sink piracy using blogs and Twitter

Tom Kelsall
Thumb Down

No title required.

All that has to be done, is to convince the artists to step outside the vicious chain of promotor/distributor control. Incentivise the artists to produce music for themselves and publicise/sell it themselves and the likes of Louis Walsh/Simon Cowell will be no more... Artists will make money from their music and mere humans like you and I will have access to what we want at sensible prices.

Let's remember - the promotor/distributor geeks who actually bring the lawsuits (with the exception of f**kwit Bono) are NOT trying to protect artist copyright... they're trying to protect their own profits...

Microsoft re-org hints at Windows and Mobile merge

Tom Kelsall
FAIL

It's not about...

..."roadmap" and "direction" and other Management Speak/Bullshit Bingo nonsense. It's about an interface that wasn't designed for a phone and a bloody awful OS. It's about companies having to overlay an interface on Windows Mobile to make it palatable to phone lovers. (Thanks HtC) and it's about the fact that Microsoft should stick to what they're good at.

Microsoft should make kernals for mobiles and let others design the front end around it.

US music royalties' collector sues T-Mobile over ringback tones

Tom Kelsall
Stop

Yet another reason...

for a radical review of global music licensing laws and processes. The artists don't benefit from these suits HALF as much as labels, distributors and so on. The time is right to put the power back in the artist's hands and to sell music directly from artist to consumer - I'd be a lot happier paying an artist directly for his stuff than paying some faceless corporation! And, of course, if I needed a CD version I'd burn one. But I'd be far more likely to carry my music around on my MP3 player of choice and broadcast it direct to my car/home stereo as required...

UK air-traffic offers flying-car-style safety gizmo

Tom Kelsall
Coat

I would like to see....

an on-board system which artificially overlays "3d" heads-up pictures of controlled airspace onto the canopy/windscreen/etc. You'd have your traditional HUD information, plus shaded areas on the display in different colours according to the type of airspace in front and to either side of the nose. Only "free" airspace would have no colour. Finally, the display would show a particularly noticeable flag when you entered controlled airspace to ensure you either got the hell out or took the appropriate action.

I think the technology exists already for this kind of display; all we need now is the back-end infrastructure to support it.

Ferry giant refuses ID card

Tom Kelsall

Passport?

EU Citizens don't NEED a passport to travel in the EU. They need a "Recognised form of photo ID" which includes the EU-designed UK Driving Licence. If they didn't accept his ID card they SHOULD have accepted his driving licence. The man's NOT an idiot for believing what the government told him - that his ID card is a valid form of travel ID. It is. The people who screwed up and P&O who failed to adequately disseminate publicly available information about travle ID changes to their gate control staff.

"...extradition treaties are not solely intended for terrorists."

You miss the point entirely. He has been charged in the US with offences under their anti-terrorist legislation. The application for extradition was made with reference to those charges.

"being suicidal is not a defence against extradition."

Extradition is a process whereby someone accused of a crime in a co-committed country can be sent to that country and tried there. "Defence" is a process whereby you deny a crime and poresent evidence which you hope will prove your innocence. They are two separate processes. You may influence the decision in an extradition application by presenting mitigating information or evidence which may have an impact on the thinking of the authorities; I would think that mental health would fall into this category.

I really don't understand what your argument is; perhaps you should read up on the involved processes and become better informed prior to commenting again?

Corel Holdings scoops up cash-strapped Corel Corp

Tom Kelsall

Why is it that...

the three products you mention as Corel products were in fact invented and written by other companies, and you don't even mention the ONE product they wrote themselves, their Flagship Suite "Corel Draw!"?

Aside from that what you're basically saying is the equivalent of Bill Gates buying out Microsoft... it's a meaningless paper exercise.

Microsoft admits Mac was Windows 7 muse

Tom Kelsall

@AC @21:33

Jesus dude you just need to calm the hell down. Take some prozac or something eh? So you're not going to use Windows and don't like the interface which you feel is too simplistic for you. SO WHAT?! Your use or non-use of Windows doesn't affect me AT ALL. What does affect me is offensive language, confrontational posturing and aggressive online behaviour which you're too scared to put your name to.

Thank you and good night.

Tom Kelsall
WTF?

@AC 13:43

All your post (rabid and flecked with angry spittle as it is) has convinced me of, is that YOU'RE a "fanboi". (Whatever TF that actually means).

There are different OSs available. Use the one on your own computer that you like using. Use the one at work you're told to use. Simple enough isn't it? I like W7 - it's faster on the same hardware than XP was. I tried Vista once and didn't try it again. I haven't used a modern Mac but I'm OK cos I'm happy where I am. I tried Ubuntu 7.10 and decided it wasn't "mature enough" as an OS for me - I haven't been back there yet.

If more people just used what they liked using and let others do the same the world would be a much nicer place.

Tom Kelsall
WTF?

This is a stupid argument...

With the same Human/Computer Interaction problems to solve, and similar enough architecture that you need a feeler gauge to get between them, OF COURSE interfaces are going to end up being similar... even on ostensibly different systems.

If Microsoft copies Apple's interface ideas, so what? Apple have some great interface ideas. I don't have the capacity to get angry over something so.... BANAL. I like using my computer. Whatever interface it uses.

Tom Kelsall
Thumb Down

It's an unworkable model...

It's been working for a while now, but I just don't see how "You are licensed to use it but you don't own it" is a sustainable model. When I upgrade my PC to a shiny new one with shiny new software, I don't WANT to put my old software back on it, but SOMEONE could benefit from it... a sale is a sensible and logical way to pass the "right to use" onto someone else without them having to fork out for another copy, probably of a version which won't run on their old system.

If it's a bogus caller of course they will never write to you...

Pub toilet todger tiff ends in bloodbath

Tom Kelsall

Defence?!

How is the word "Defence" relevant in reference to firearms? "Defence" would be a bullet-proof vest or some other thing capable of blocking high velocity projectiles. When faced with a gun (attack weapon) having a gun yourself simply doubles the number of attack weapons present; it does not allow you to DEFEND yourself, it allow you to attack first.

Guns are not, never have been and never will be a defensive device; they are a WEAPON of OFFENSE. They can be used to attack. Their presence alone might be a deterrent to attack from another quarter; however when two opposing parties each have one firearm, the deterrent effect is neutralised.

Hi-tech cops lose their website

Tom Kelsall

I don't get it...

Why should they re-register it when it's (a) a discontinued department name and (b) an inappropriate TLD anyway?

Has anyone thought that they might have let it lapse DELIBERATELY because it wasn't what they were called any more?! The press might like to have a laugh at them, having received a press release from Klaus Winkelhacker - but really it's entirely possible that this was deliberate and the only stupid people are the ones NOT linking to the CURRENT URL!

Now Hollywood is chasing UK downloaders

Tom Kelsall

Errr...

For those of you tempted to "let it go to court and then present your cancellation notice"... FORGET IT. You have a legal duty as the Defendant OR the Plaintiff to make any information available which may make the visit to Court unnecessary - Civil Procedure Rules (the legally binding process for Civil Court Action) make clear that a Court hearing is an absolute last resort and every effort MUST be made to avoid it.

If you did this, you may lose the case and you may also be found in contempt. Now - if you told them a few times in writing FIRST, and put it in your Defence, and THEN attended Court and waved the bit of paper about... that's a different matter.

@AC RE: Installing FF to get Bus Apps working

Do we work for the same company??? We've had to do that too - specifically for our helpdesk app!!

A way to manage FF3 via Group Policy would be amazing; and as we use SMS to deploy packages, we could easily fit FF3 into a package and send it out. Patching is managed by the app - and if we had a GPO to do it with, we could simply ensure that all updates were downloaded and installed instantly.

San Francisco's 'rogue' sysadmin still being paid while in jail

@Greg Fleming - was that directed at me? I've just explained my position on that and I extend my "greeting" to Gianni and Louis to you too. If it was not directed at me then please accept my apologies and move along please, nothing to see here.

Tom Kelsall

Trying to be nice myself, and failing.

When I posted my earlier comment, I had misread the article. I made a mistake based upon that misreading. I make no apology for that because I'm fucking human.
