New submarine cable to link Japan, Europe, through famed Northwest Passage

Re: Who are the customers?

Its probably harder to shoot down an undersea cable, plus there is a possibility eventually of legislation limiting satellite constellations.

With billionaires willy waving their way into space plus others thinking to make money from connecting remote hunter/gatherers to tik tok, space will become too busy for sensible users.

I have never really understood bloke's need for sending selphallic (selphies) messages to women they fancy.

I prefer to save such viewing for those private moments so that I can share with the lady in question either gasps of admiration or laughter, depending on the impression given.

What makes so many blokes think they are going to make a favourable impression based on an anatomical photo?

Note: selphies was coined by a female friend of mine who had been on the receiving end of a series of dick pics from an admirer, she signed him up for every penis enlargement ad she could find. He desisted.

Re: Can you sue the government for incompetence?

When Bliar amalgamated HM Customs and Excise with the Inland Revenue in 2005 he practically gave them carte blanche power they seem to listen to no-one and consider themselves infallible.

Part of the problem is that oversight is not from the cabinet directly it is from a board of Commissioners appointed by the Queen ( as told by the PM of the day), so it is not easy to just tell the HMRC to change direction when they are effectively a crown agency.

Wi-Fi not working? It's time to consult the lovely people on those fine Linux forums

Chris G

Re: "first read the fine forum thread until the end"

Nowadays you need to buy an industrial washing machine if you want it to outweigh the manual (assuming you actually get a physical, dead tree manual).

Buying anything that has a battery in it, or was even once close to a battery or has any moving parts, will get you something where the first fifty pages are Elfin safety warnings and disclaimers in a couple of dozen languages.

Then when you actually find your language of choice, the instructions refer to numbered parts that are not included on the fly leaf drawing.

I almost always go to the website so that I can scream at the forum link that is 'under maintenance' for the first few tries and then has no reference at all to my problem.

Asus, I am looking at you.

Chris G

Re: I am here to help. What can I do for you today?

The majority of websites that have a chat function seem designed only to get you to 'chat' with the bot/entity that is usually at least as dysfunctional as the website.

Even when I am trying to spend my own money, sometimes I find it extremely difficult simply because there is no way to find the correct product and the means to buy it.

A case in point, recently I wanted a resin based cement to repair my rainwater deposit, the product I needed was one of three similar so I went to the company web site and determined the correct one, the company doesn't sell direct so I clicked on the 'suppliers near you' button which defaulted to anywhere in the World but Europe aside from giving the European head office postal address.

Went to the chat box who after a lengthy description of the product I wanted, told me to click on suppliers near you!

The chatter was obviously someone in a country far, far away and could give me no other answer.

Now my deposit is repaired with a system using lime that the Moors invented centuries ago, cheaper but only good for two seasons.

Self defence

I find the notion of offering self defence classes to women not only disgusting when it is the perpetrators who need education but also a sign of ignorance from the management who suggested it.

Aa a former instructor of martial arts, I have taught plenty of female students as well as running specific defence classes for girls and women. Many students I have spoken to have told me that learning the techniques is less difficult than overcoming an instinct to freeze when attacked or assaulted in a real situation.

I don't know if this is a defensive reaction to avoid aggravating an assailant or simply fear but it seems it does happen even to females with higher grades in their art, ultimately it is the assailant who is at fault and if a victim for whatever reason is unable to resist, it should mot reflect on them (as has happened more than omce in Spanish and probably other courts).

I have had my system about three and a half years, 12 panels and a 48v battery composed of reconditioned traction cells. I live in Spain, today was a bit cloudy so I only made 5.43KWh, yesterday was over 8KWh more than I use.

I have no choice as the nearest grid supply is over 3Km from me, running new poles and cable would approach six figures going by the conversation I had in the Eberdrola office.

I have few problems, just have to keep an eye on the electrolyte and keep a genny on standby in case of more than three days of solid overcast, something that has not happened so far.

My biggest problem was in the beginning, the idiot who made the panel frames was not remotely a welder so the first big blow ripped the lot apart, the supplier had to replace 4 panels and I made him pay me to reconstruct the frames. My belt and braces rebuild has so far withstood gusts that bent my neighbour's TV aerial mast.

Nobody I have spoken to who has a hybrid 'grid and panel system has gained by it, better to go off grid so that the power co's can't screw you.

A British launch capability for smaller items would be useful for many projects that don't require the energy output of a small country to get into space.

UK and USA seek new world order for cross-border data sharing and privacy

Chris G

“Of all the democracy-affirming technologies, we’re particularly interested in ones that can help us use personal or sensitive data responsibly,”

So they need organisations that have experience with this kind of data and who can cooperate, maybe the NSA and GCHQ would fill that bill since they have been doing it for years.

Though possibly not responibly.

I find it unlikely that any agreement between the UK and US will fit in with the EU's notions on data sharing.

Re: 'Legitimate purposes'

" But still miles better than some of those disgusting US sites with 120 tracking options, all on by default and must be clicked off one at a time."

There are plenty of UK and European sites that do the same, GDPR UK and European need to have a more easily accessible reporting system so that anyone can flag such sites, as things are, reporting a site to the Spanish DPA is difficult and I feel deliberately so to avoid the need to investigate what could be unmanageable levels of complaint.

Chris G

Re: And the rest too, please

I am curious as to how long it takes after landing on a page for the site to set cookies and/or start to harvest data, particularly those sites that deliberately seem to have convoluted opt out pages, when under the current law as I understand it, they need to receive your consent.

I also find the 'legitimate interests' that seem to always be set to on are for the most part not legal without specific consent even though it appears so because there is no explanation of what they are.

Here from the ICO:

"the term ‘legitimate purpose’ refers to facilitating the provision of an information society service – ie, a service the user explicitly requests. This does not include third parties such as analytics services or online advertising."

On most sites legitimate purpose or interest is used as a catch all to con the user into leaving a lot of undesirable data scraping live.
