I love Apple products and design, but they are CROOKS

I love Apple products and design, but they are CROOKS, along with most other large corporations and super-rich asshats.

As long as the rich can steal from the American people, especially with tax breaks invested in our competitors oveseas, things will get worse and worse.

Stop the rot now.

The reality? How much storage do you really need?

Not counting OS, etc, how much personal storage do you really need? How many songs and videos do you really keep?

Personally, with Netflix etc online now, there is ever-declining need to actually save movies. Not to mention I can listen to songs again and again, but watching the same movies over and over is a drag. Perhaps 1 TB is more than enough?

I have an Apple Fusion drive (128 GB SSD plus 1TB disk) and it's about half full, mostly movies. The 128 GB SSD is mostly operating system, applications and work files - I don't bother to keep movies etc there.

Skateboard requires 2 hands to operate

As a tablet, it's fine. As a phone, it's terrible. When I am out shopping, biking, or otherwise need to use a phone, I usually only have one hand free.

I will never own a phone which requires 2 hands to operate. Tablet, yes. Phone, no.

Self-selecting surveys.. why bother?

How many of these people actually own those devices? How many for longer than a month? Self-selecting surveys are worthless, really.

Austerity Kills Demand

Austerity kills demand. Without demand, no company will invest.

Tories and Republicans are addicted to the rich.

Austerity only benefits the top 2-5% of society.

Android's problems

1) there are 25-50 versions out there, terrible for App makers (me). I make one iOS version and it always runs on all iPads and iPhones.

2) The number of detected mobile malware attacks continues to skyrocket. McAfee counts over 36,000 mobile malware threats—almost entirely targeting the Android OS [in 4th quarter 2012]. - PC World

3) Google Chrome has just been updated, and is still crap at HTML5 and does not offer a full-screen mode.

I hope Google gets it act together and stops allowing so many, many different incompatible versions of Android. They only hurt the brand.

Re: wtf ?

I have an iPhone and a brand new Nexus 7 with the new Chrome. Chrome is crap. Viewport tiny on 1280 x 800 screen, tabs permanently in place, URL bar too, no full screen mode.

I use Dolphin on the Nexus - 10x better than Chrome.

Hydrogen is a scam by oil companies to retain centralized control of energy

Hydrogen is a low energy-density fuel, hard to store safely.

Hydrogen is far more powerful greenhouse gas (if it leaks, and it will) than CO2.

No one ever considers the extraordinary resale value of Macs.

I sold an 8 year old Mac on eBay for $550, half the cost of a new MacMini.

Windows pain pain pain

Windows is such a total pain, people are just finally feeling like they own Windows 7, somewhat. Moving to Windows 8 is like asking people who haven't slept in 40 hours to wake up and get out of bed and into another bed which is only slightly better.

Feck Off, they will say.

Underfunded USPTO

The primary problem is funding. The USPTO does only a tiny fraction of searching for prior art when reviewing software patents. And god forbid they trust the applicants.

Several Apple patents are clearly shown to be prior art in videos from the 1970s Architecture Machine Group under Nicholas Negroponte, yet the USPTO appears to have ignored these. For example: page flipping as part of my Master's Thesis; The Spatial Data Management System (SDMS) 1978

Many other examples of current software patents can be seen to have appeared in the 1970s at MIT and other universities and research groups.

The USPTO gets pressed over and over by rich companies to award patents, and they "let the courts decide" with the results we see today.

The system is broken.

Steve Jobs' position would have been...

Steve Jobs' position would have been to never release such a crappy Apple Maps in the first place. Sure, he would still hate Google now, etc etc, but he never would allow the Apple name to appear on the iOS6 maps.

As I understand it, Apple felt they had to have a turn-by-turn navigator, and Google has point-blank refused to provide this. Apple felt boxed in, rightly so. But the decision to move ahead with iOS6 maps was based on arrogance, not clear-thinking.

I worked with the Nokia maps people closely for over 4 years, and I can tell you, maps are very, VERY hard to do well. Google are head-and-shoulders above all the rest, but Nokia is pretty good after 10 years of work (some done prior to the acquisition of the mapping division)

From Google's perspective, they want the end-user info they will get from a mapping app; Apple wants the same, or at least to deny it to Google.

We will see if Google's new map app includes turn-by-turn... If not, then we could wait for 3-4-5 years for Apple to catch up... and then where will Google be?

Clean, clear and well-documented = The Answer

As long as your code is clean, clear and well-documented (both inline documentation, as well as clear overall documentation), then it matters not how many return-points you use.

I like my code to be clear to someone looking at it for the first time, without 20 levels of indentation and brackets, etc.

Good, linear, carefully thought-out code means that you don't screw whichever poor bastard has to come along when you get hit by a bus!

Cheers!

Camera: Crappy over-compression still ?

Has anyone tested to see if the camera STILL over-compresses image?

Originally, you took a 5 MP picture = 15 MBytes or so, and Nokia steps on it hard: Resulting image size: 800 Kbytes, or about 20:1 compression.

Might as well use a 2 MP camera instead.

Thumb Up

I don't have one, but...

I think the best use of these jammers would be to switch one on just long enough to stop the arsehole's current call, and watch him swear, and look at the "Good signal" indicator...

THEN when he reconnects, jam him again just long enough to get a reaction, but again switch off the jammer before he looks at the signal strength indicator...

And so on, and again, and again, until he has a fit and tosses the phone out altogether!

William Donelson

Enabling technologies misused

Technology is and ACCELERATOR and MULTIPLIER of Human Behaviour and Aspirations.

If 1% of your population have bad or anti-social aspirations, then technology MULTIPLIES that !

History is rife with examples of enabling technologies being misused.

For example:

Handguns and small arms. The world is MUCH more dangerous now that these technologies are in widespread use. 14 year-olds in Africa with assault weapons? No wonder many place in Africa are so unstable.

Cellphones: Now used in controlling IEDs and to coordinate anti-social behaviour and terrorism.

Nuclear chemicals: too horrible to consider.

It's like that old saying, "Guns don't kill people. People kill people."

-- YES, it's just that guns make it So Much Easier !

WIthout education and social tolerance, society breaks down. And technology speeds that process up, for good or evil.

By "Classic", they mean "Old and Slow"

Just how Really Bad are the new Classics?

Here is my list so far -

/- VERY Slow menu switching response (up to SIX seconds)

/- Display of clock rather than song info when "Now Playing"

/- Inability to use existing LEGAL 3rd party dock products (including Apple-advertised)

/- Audio skipping during operation of menus

/- Slow connection to Mac/PC

/- Inability to disable "split-screen" menus

/- Lagging / Unresponsive click-wheel

/- Camera Connector not working

/- Inability to use EQ settings without skipping / distortion

( I will be buying a 5.5G model rather than this premature abomination )

William Donelson

You said: "Much to our surprise..."

Keep in mind, these are Americans, NOT British sheep who buy what they are told and then whimper silently when screwed.

Americans complain and sue at the drop of a hat.

Brits take their punishment and just buy what they're told, usually at near-double what Americans pay.

What's up with that, then?

William Donelson

See it on TV for free, and use (TiVo, Sky+, PVR) to skip the commercials

Why pay?

I have paid $1.99 for some shows to see them before release here in the UK, but at $1.99 per show (about £1), it's a nice convenience.

At $4.99, FORGET IT !!!
