I've wondered who he reminds me of

We were doing a computer room shutdown so some heavy duty electrical work could be done. Being the Solaris guy I had cronned a init 0 so when I got in all my babies were at the OK prompt. I got to the console on the first one and entered the command power-off just exactly as the facilities guy hit the big breaker. For a few seconds I had a blind panic that I had somehow managed to connect my sun box to something much more serious. The Windows guys were swearing copiously as they had only just got half way through their complicate and order shutdown process.
I staved off brown underpants but only just.
One of the main reasons I post on these Reg articles about the twit who liked anti social media so much he bought the company is for the downvotes from Musk Ox fans. It is also a bit of a compulsive car crash thing as well. I have had to stop sneering at my wife for obsessively following the fate of Elizabeth Holmes now.
I may have told this before - apologies to fellow veteran commentards if I have.
Some contractors had been brought in to do some work on the computer room. Their work involved some heavy hammering work. Some of this was quite close to the BRB and duly triggered it off. Cue the familiar sphincter tightening and loosening followed by lots of frenetic running around and shouting till everything had come back to a state resembling normal.
As a side observation, I do wonder if kit in those older days was more tolerant of such unexpected outages compared to now. Where I work now has all its hardware in a dedicated data centre with resilient this that and everything. Would the modern rackmount stuff come back with as little complaint as was experienced in those (not really) halcyon days?
I work in higher education where there is a current dispute. I imagine that an offer will be made which the onions will put to the membership. It will likely be less than current inflation so will be a de facto pay cut. Does this mean I should not complain about being fractionally less well off than I might have been?
Busniness Analyst: OK we need to replace our ageing ERP application. This meeting is to decide how to achieve this with minimum disruption and the most cost effective solution.
Sales Droid: There is this fantastic new technology where you can host it remotely and so save a fortune on your CAPEX budget. It also increases resilience and scaleability.
BA: Sounds great.
Systems Manager: What clout platform does this run on?
SD: This is a new integrated ERP package based around an established technology stack built on the best of breed Oracle products.
SM: Right, can I stop you there. There is no way that this will be affordable or efficient. We should look for another product.
BA: Great! When can we start implementation?
And the rest is history
I used to drive a taxi in Taunton in Somerset. Wages were a percentage of takings and I used to do insane hours. I think it was around 100. My longest day was Thursday where I would start at 0700 and finish at 0330 the following morning.
Nowadays I would fall asleep at the wheel and experience one of Musks RUDs
Don't Junior Doctors do those sorts of hours?
Were I to work for this antisocial media I would be heading for the door as others have said they should.
The trouble with any system (or desktop for that matter) support is that you are only noticed when things go wrong. I know that this is utterly unoriginal but it is still true. Back in the day, they noticed if the punch cards were not sorted properly. Now they notice if the auto-scale doesn't scale. Personally, I was too late to the party to experience punch cards and my current gig is not ready to step into the cloudy utopia. Plus ca change!
I am not sure what the solution is though I am already counting down to retirement.
And before anyone points it out, I know I am ignoring my own advice. I am just a slave to the commentardosphere here on El Reg!
First, every time someone posts a critical thing about the Chief Twi(a)t they get at least one downvote. Does the Musk Ox patrol these chats and punish anyone who says nasty things about him? Enquiring minds wish to know.
Secondly, can we have a hold on articles about this until he drives the antisocial into the ground - perhaps the same time the Zuck android kills facefail.
This seems to show that there is a bit of a single point of failure by having one (albeit very dedicated and thorough) person to have the ultimate say over something so important.
I hope that the kernel developers and Linus work to get a more resilient system without sacrificing the care with which the development is completed these days.
Markets are a lot more complicated than two curves representing supply and demand. Also a market is not a natural phenomenon, rather it is a human creation and so is subject to all the prejudices and preconceptions that us humans are full of. Thus, the price of sports bras and sanitary products is not determined by some invisible hand. For example, here in Blighty, sanitary products are not zero rated for VAT and so are more epxensive than they need to be. Essential products are not supposed to carry VAT.
</pedantic ranting>
Why do these types feel the need to impose such things. The whole debate about remote working seems to be seen in far too binary a manner. Speaking personally coming to the office once a month or so is what I want (and seem to have at present). Others, I know will far prefer to be clocking into an office most days. Why not allow for all scenarios?
