Asus Eee Pad Slider SL101

Alex Walsh

Very true, I paid £149 for my Asus EEE 1215 a few months ago. Very pleased with it too.

Dixons rolls out cut-price 3D, smart TVs

Alex Walsh

Who makes the tellies for them? Presumably it's just a rebadge of an existing telly? I suppose they're looking to make a profit by selling massively expensive warranties?

The new touchy-feely Doctor Who trend: Worrying

Alex Walsh

Absolutely, my misspelling of Davison renders everything I said invalid. Cheers for that.

*stomps off to play with his Danbury Mint Doctor Who chess set whilst reading Targets Travels Beyond the Tardis*

Alex Walsh

I remember

Reading contemporary interviews about the perceived rivalry between star trek and dr who, the phrase that stuck in my mind was something along the lines of "they had the budget but by god we had the talented script writers". That's all gone now of course. There are no proper 4 parters, and the whole thing is being "Holbyised" (the process of spinning out another show from a drama like Casualty into a relationship based pseudo soap opera like Holby). Matt Smith is the first bearable Dr since Peter Davidson (although Peri did make some of the Colin Bakers bearable).

Motorola Razr Android smartphone

Alex Walsh

Samsung Galaxy SII?

This is free/£99 on a lot of contracts now and benchmarks pretty identically. Is the Motorola different enough to justify the extra cost?

Were Lavasoft's buyers once on its hit list?

Alex Walsh

Nice bit of investigative journalism there. Try not to let it happen again or we might get unrealistic expectations.

Nazi Star Trek episode finally broadcast in Germany

"For you Kirk, zee Trek is over."

*pistol whipping*

Although I imagine he managed to find a well dressed German Fräulein to get jiggy with first.

Ten... high-end Android tablets

Alex Walsh

Flex

I've had a play with a few of the tested tablets on the high street and the one thing that astonished me about most of them (HTC Flyer and Asus Transformer aside) was the lack of rigidity in them, especially compared to an iPad. Hand on each side, there's a good deal of twist in most of them, which on a £300+ product doesn't inspire confidence at all.

HTC prepares quad-core smartphone for 2012

Alex Walsh

Power consumption

There's no power hit on doubling the cores to 4, if I remember some slides from an ARM presentation correctly.

How much?

Moto rolls out Xoom 2 Android fondleslabs

Alex Walsh

My bad, since the article doesn't show on the same page as the comment box, and I didn't fancy multiple windows, I decided to go from memory.

The point still stands though, Honeycomb has been a complete balls up in terms of an OS, very little tablet specific support, so no clear price incentive (£20? Wow) isn't going to drive customers away from the iPad.

Alex Walsh

Price

When are these Android tablet makers going to learn that their devices need to be cheaper than the iPad2? If the smaller xoom2 is going to cost £344, I shudder to think what the full size one will cost.

They're making it very easy for Apple aren't they?

PlayStation 3 sales catch up with Xbox 360 total

Alex Walsh

heh

So the clear market leader for the past two generations with the strongest brand name in consoles with Playstation, has *almost* caught up with the upstart? I'm _sure_ that must have Sony rejoicing.

My love for Playstations has been on a steady decline since the original machine mind you.

Amazon’s shares slashed as profits drop 73%

Alex Walsh

Backend infastructure spend shouldn't affect profit, it's capital expenditure. So the figures are even worse than you've suggested. Unless they've written the cost off, which is even worse :)

Sony Tablet S

Alex Walsh

typical sony

They wait and wait and wait and then slavishly follow all the issues that have stopped Android tablets really competing with the iPad. Proprietary ports? A price scheme identical to the iPad? We all saw what that did to the Motorola Xoom didn't we?

*sigh*

Nokia to flood emerging markets with budget blowers

Nice to see you take me up on the headline I suggested via twitter, shame you forgot to credit me :)

Deep inside ARM's new Intel killer

Alex Walsh

Why?

ARM's business model means they make money, but not a mad amount of money. And the skill is obviously in the staff, not the company. Intel have probably spent more trying to compete than they'd need to spend buying either ARM or it's staff many times over.

Spotify 'sold soul' to boy king Zuckerberg

Alex Walsh

I understood Sony BMG Music, Universal Music, Warner Music, EMI and Merlin between them own around 18% of the share capital in spotify? Unless it's changed since the early issue back in 2008.

IMHO that alters things as little as Spotify should be seen more as a platform rather than an application in it's own right. It exists to stop punters paying their money to Apple or pirating, probably in that order :)

Spotify's rising revenues gobbled by royalties blackhole

Aren't Spotify's major shareholders the record labels? Dividends aren't tax deductable but inflated licenses are...

Old Napster guy’s fan letter to Spotify upstart

I'm using it and I've not got it linked to facebook. What are you doing wrong?

Panasonic HM-TA20 underwater camcorder

Alex Walsh

3m?

That's not underwater, that's splashproof. depth is sorted by pressure isn't it? Moving the thing underwater will generate more pressure than holding it still, so you'll be lucky with a puddle. Get an proper enclosure for your existing camera.

Apple snubs Samsung's Oz patent peace offering

Alex Walsh

Running scared

After the comical launch of the 4S yesterday, which is basically a fix version of the iPhone 4, fixing all the faults and bringing it up to spec with where other smartphones were a few months ago, Apple must be redoubling their efforts to stop better products reaching the market.

I laughed when I saw some apologists saying that £99/$99 for an iPhone 4 on a two year contract was a great deal now the 4S has been announced, tempting the 3GS owners (like me) to upgrade on the cheap. Why would I want an iPhone 4 though? It will be almost 3 iterations out of date by the time a 2 year contract runs out.

The iPhone 4S in depth: More than just a vestigial 'S'

Alex Walsh

"I think the more significant announcement was the iPhone 4 getting a huge price-cut: how many folks toting an ageing 3GS are going to take the opportunity to upgrade there?"

Not on a two year contract, the phone will be two, almost 3 iterations old by the that time.

Samsung shifts 10 millionth Galaxy SII

Alex Walsh
FAIL

"There's a reason Ferraris make Ferraris and Ford make Fords."

That'll be the same Ford that made the original GT40 to crush Ferrari's dominance at the Le Mans 24 hour race? The car that won it 4 times on the trot, ending a series of 6 back to back wins for Ferrari? Good metaphor :)

Acer insists fondleslab 'fever' is fading

Alex Walsh

possibly

because MS are putting a lot of effort porting their new OS to ARM?

Alex Walsh

No fever

The media and manufacturers have confused iPad fever with fondleslab fever. Look at the failures- the Xoom failed to sell, the Touchpad failed to sell, the Playbook failed to sell, the Transformer, whilst being innovative and all, has failed to sell in significant numbers. The general public don't want tablets, they want iPads

Sony ballyhoos budget PSP

Alex Walsh

wifi

The only thing I've ever used the wifi for involved using my hacked PSP as a XBMC remote :-)

Still too expensive IMHO. Needs to be £70-£80

Southwest One made overpayments of £4.6m

Alex Walsh

any payments not received back

should be reported to the police (Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA)) under the money laundering act. Overpayments where the recipient has been informed of the error are treated as handling of stolen goods/money laundering under UK law and have been for several years now.

Sony slashes PlayStation 3 prices

Alex Walsh

Hardly a bargain

You can pick a 4gig Xbox 360 up for around the £100 mark. If you don't do installs, that's just about adequate.

Chinese giant figures to muscle into UK mobe market

Alex Walsh

if the 3 mifi is anything to go by

then we could be in for some well made devices. I love my mifi, really well built imho.

TwitPic founder tries to pull rug from under Twitter

Alex Walsh

Heello

Signed up and had a play around after reading this. Lordy it's slow. They reckon 100,000 sign ups a day atm but the only way to find people is through search, the What's Happening tab is disabled (so you can't see what everyone is pinging) due to server load issues.

Feels very slow and lonely atm :)

Lester not Lewis?

I assume Lester wrote this because Lewis is sitting in the corner rocking backwards and forwards sobbing quietly to himself that something American & military isn't working properly?

Use found for Twitter and Liz Jones

NHS rant

I think it was the NHS rant she did the other week, where she complained bitterly that the local NHS doctors surgery wouldn't let her queue jump for Hep A and Hep B jabs the day before her trip to Somalia that bought the insane old harridan to the attention of those of us normal enough to never venture to the Daily Mail's website.

Good work though. I'm sure a lot of other celebs would see the joke and match the donations, so how about it Liz?

Acer turns to trains for imports

Alex Walsh

when

..is this glut of cheap Acer products due on our shores? I'm in need of a new lappy but have put off buying one until this fabled chalice of discount goodness comes our way...

Nintendo set to make a loss on every 3DS

Alex Walsh

Wising up

People no longer want to pay a couple of hundred pounds for a handheld and then 40 quid for a game on it.

It's the curse of the Apple 59p game. The number of kids I've seen playing stuff on iPod Touches recently when in the past it's been a Nintendo DS of some sort is frightening.

PlayStation Vita release leaked

Alex Walsh

RAM

I was reading on a dev's blog last week, that the RAM has already been cut on the Vita. If they've not started manufacturing yet, that doesn't leave them very long does it?

Dell Streak 7 Android tablet

Alex Walsh

"even if it costs more"

£180 more. That's a lot more. And that's before you look at the 3G version of the flyer. Lordy, did you buy a crap Dell desktop at some point or something?

Sunspot decline could mean decades of cold UK winters

Didn't you run this article a couple of weeks ago???

Sony to launch PlayStation 4 in 2012, say moles

Alex Walsh

Unlikely

Unless it's a new version of the PS3 with motion control, I doubt that Sony could actually afford to develop and release a new console at the moment. They've taken a massive hammering financially recently and it's always been the perceived wisdom that the way for MS to beat them at the console game would be to accelerate the life cycle.

Aussie retailer accuses UK shops of HDMI 'scam'

Alex Walsh

Monster!

It's always made me laugh. A digital signal is either received or not received, as I'm all too aware when it's pissing down on our exposed sat dish. paying £100+ for a HDMI cable is the modern equivalent of being gulled by a snake oil seller.

The only downside of cheapo cables are their propensity to fall to bits, which puts them in the not receiving category imho.

'Dirty' Hari defends radical interview mashup technique

Alex Walsh

from that article

Hari should not be writing interviews, he should be a feature writer, peppering his features with quotes from the subject.

Alex Walsh

difficult

Any journo who has every transcribed an audio interview will know what made perfect sense whilst being heard, can actually look completely incomprehensible in written form. Obviously some editing goes on to remove the self interruptions, tangents, stutters, nonsensical sentence construction etc but it looks very much like Hari went a lot further than this.

Who was it recently that got rumbled for pretending to be a life long friend of an ex president and writing lots of books with entirely fictitious quotes in it?

Thumb Down

I'm with Virgin on this one

I usually get 9.xx out of my 10meg line, and also get 976k out of the 1meg upload with Virgin. Considerably better than the upto's I got with F2S, Eclipse and BT.

To quote The Stark House motto

From Game of Thrones, which has just finished it's first series on HBO (and has a new book coming out next month):

"Winter is coming".

Time to re watch the training manual that is The Day After Tomorrow then.

Nintendo: no DVD, BD playback for Wii U

Alex Walsh

sorry to rock the boat but

my TV has 3 HDMI sockets. Currently my boxee box, xbox 360 and BD player take them all up. If I want to plug my HD camcorder in, I have to unplug one.

HDMI splitters are expensive and a lot of them don't autoswitch, meaning you have to fiddle with yet another tiny remote. Put more functionality into one box, and save me a HDMI slot dammit Nintendo!
