Bradley Manning now in nicer Army prison

David Neil

That's the issue right there

"There was a time when Manning would have been shot after a quick and speedy trial for what he's accused of doing."

At the moment he is being denied even a trial, even serving members of the US military have constitutional protection

OCZ shares trashed by short seller's research note

David Neil

But that would have a bearing

People may be less inclined to invest in a company who have a former criminal at the helm, if there is less chance of investment then they may have a longer time to market on a new product.

Look at the brouhaha over Mr Jobs and the succession plan at Apple, when an individual is perceived to have such a bearing on a companies performance then they will be the focus on speculation as much as quarterly earnings forecasts.

Virgin Media says sorry over Superhub snafu

David Neil

Not sure that adds up

AFAIK the new superhubs are bonded to Docsis3, which uses a different part of the bandwidth to Docsis2 which your 10mb line would be on.

The problems with the old infrastructure have been going on for years, and it's simply the number of people they have on each UBR that causes the biggest amount of complaints.

I seem to recall something like this before

Broder TV used to have a "whats on locally" thing I caught a couple of times whilst visiting my parents on the Solway coast.

Was a real time trip to see a local gala day or village fete being advertised just after the news, made me yearn for a gentler time when all a 12 year old was exposed to was a copy of Look-In

Claiming expenses?

I wonder what the turn around for paying the staffs expenses is here, and are they allowed to claim ancillary costs like the fuel etc.?

I'd hate to be waiting 2 weeks for an expense claim to clear when the store have already sold the gizmo and have the cash in hand.

Radioactive Tokyo tapwater HARMS BABIES ... if drunk for a year

E11 card ftw

Few years back we took our first family holiday to Fuertaventura and my then 4 year old daughter slipped in the bath and split her chin open.

The hotel told us to go to the clinic over the street, they wanted 40 euro to even look at her. My GF whipped out the E11 card and said what about this?

Go to the Spanish hospital on the other side of town.

Into the taxi, get to the hospital and language barrier aside, it was without a doubt the best healthcare experience I have ever seen.

Waiting less than 5 minutes to be seen, some very neat stitching (I trained as a nurse so know a good job when I see one), a prescription for some paediatric painkillers for the little one and an appointment next day. They made follow up appointments for the rest of the holiday to check on her wound and were nothing but helpful. That and the weather had me wondering if I could wangle an in-company transfer to work out there...

Betfair promises problems are behind it

David Neil
FAIL

The site was donald ducked most of Saturday as well

Cricket, Rugby, Football, all buggered.

Barely a word out of them, markets being opened for a fwe minutes to allow you to take a position and then suspended for the next hour meaning you couldn't trade your way out of it.

If I wanted a plain bookie, I'd go use one, if I want to using an exchange I'm stuck using Betfair, for the moment. Looks like a lot of people decided to open accounts at Betdaq and use that for trading, the liquidity issues should disappear once people decide that Betfair is no longer reliable and head elsewhere.

Game offers pre-orders on pre-owned titles

David Neil

RRP

The RRP may be £50, but the number of games actually the shelves for that price point is pretty small.

A quick browse round my local Game shows the majority of newish releases are proced up at around the £39.99 mark, with pre-owned around £34. By the time you pay a load of MS points for the new game only content, you would end up paing more.

Council busts breast milk ice cream parlour

David Neil

Infections and such like

My youngest spent a while in hospital just after he was born, and they had a breast milk bank, where mothers could donate milk to assist other kids in the special care unit.

As I recall the milk was marked up, sent off for pasteurisation and some other tests, but was then fine to use. Why is this not acceptable outwith a hospital environment?

As an aside

The problem with Egypt is that while the cameras were facing the crowds of people in Tahir Square, you also couldn't help noticing the tanks around them, who were there on the orders of the Defence Minister, who has just stepped in as interim president.

Peel away the hope and change bullshit and it looks like a military coup.

Disabled dude demands EA improves gaming access

David Neil

Not quite that simple

Whilst a device could be configured to mimic various control options, not all games allow any flexibility in remapping controls or altering how sensitive the inputs are. Looking at the issue Gareth has he is asking for the ability to remap a basic character movement to a mouse button, and it seems this was raised as an issue in Dead Space 1, and a fix was implied, if not actually promosed, for Dead Space 2.

Going further, look at the hissy fit being thrown over the XIM3 device for the 360, that allows you to use keyboard and mouse devices to send input to the console.

The device itself will not allow you to send control inputs in excess of what a standard controller will allow, so turning in a game still takes the same amount of time for example, but it is still regarded as cheating by some. No doubt somewhere a whiny git will complain that Gareth is gaining an unfair advantage if he starts handing out regular arse whippings.

Android's on top – will Nokia and RIM let it in?

David Neil

Eh?

"And, the sales number is highly misleading. Android is not the number one, Apple's iOS is. To general public, a touch screen smart phone = iPhone, a tablet device = iPad, a portable music/media player = iPod."

So Android is not number one in units shipped because people think all touch phones are iPhones?

I suppose in your world people must get confused about hoovering the carpet with a Dyson.

Fifa to give goal-line tech a shot

David Neil

Nice try, but the real reason FIFA have been against it

They take the old fashioned view that the laws of the game are just that, and should be equally applicable to a sunday morning game in a park as to a World Cup final.

For once it's actually refreshing to hear of a sports governing body that doesn't forget the grass roots.

Steve Jobs takes 'medical leave of absence' from Apple

David Neil

On balance

Yes, he is ill, and that's a shame, however he is the CEO of a company which provides employment for thousands.

If his health is such an issue that he cannot continue to lead the company on an ongoing basis then it is understandable that people who own the company, and are employed by it, are concerned about what plans are in place if his health continues to deteriorate.

Sony sues PlayStation 3 'hackers'

David Neil

re. DCMA

It may be US law, but the original presentation was given in Berlin

David Neil

Breath in, breath out, now calm down

Let's step through this nice and slowly ok.

The root key is held on a non flashable hardware chip in the console. To revoke the key means replacing the hardware.

If they push the firmware onto some other chip in the console, they need to sign the code with the key, thats the key that has been compromised btw.

You then go and do your own thing, and guess what, the console accepts your input as legitimate as it's signed with the key that Sony cannot revoke, cause it's burnt into the ROM.

As for the seething about 12 year old spotty coders, I assume you haven't actually spent any time validating the credentials of the guys who performed the analysis?

Grand jury meets to decide fate of WikiLeaks founder

David Neil

Try reading up on the actual charges

There is a sliding scale of what is meant by the term rape in Sweden, with the upper end being a violent physical assault, and the lower end meaning sex by coercion - basically if you've ever lied your way into bed, or whined that it's your birthday and you are entitled to that little bit extra, you would be indictable under Swedish law.

The Swedish prosecutor wants to question him over an allegation made at the lower end of the spectrum, also the complainant didn't make a formal complaint initially but approached the police for 'guidance'.

Sure it would be great to just have a trial on the evidence and be done with it, but sure as a sure thing once he is in Sweden he will be rendered to the US.
