Why would potassium be more "alive" than nitrogen 

In Is it true my body is not entirely alive?

Maybe I'm too much of an engineer, but I can't understand on what basis some chemical substances would be considered more "alive" than others. A pile of carbon looks just as "dead" as a pile of calcium.
