Let's not forget that Britain, as well as the rest of Europe, basically operated under the feudal system for about a thousand years. Old systems of control die hard; we just like to change the titles of the Dukes and Earls periodically so people will feel like progress is being made.

America is totally feudalistic at this point, as well, so don't feel like you're alone in this.
