back to article Doctor Who to marry Doctor Who's daughter

Doctor Who the 10th, David Tennant, is planning to get hitched to his fictional daughter Georgia Moffett, who also happens to be the real daughter of his fictional fifth incarnation. Moffet is the real-life fruit of former Time Lord Peter Davison's loins, and played Who offspring Jenny in 2008's The Doctor's Daughter. Davison …

    Is marrying yourself legal? :)

Technically the 'Doctor's daughter' is a clone, so he's marrying himself (I know, I know, they do look a bit different). Surely that's not allowed..

I wonder how many other Who marriages there have been - there's already precedence for a 'Time Lord' marriage when Tom Baker (fourth Doctor) briefly married Lalla Ward (Time Lady Romana). Of course, Lalla then went off and married Dawkins, so they're obviously subverting the universe from within..

    1. Pen-y-gors

I think it probably IS legal...

The good old C of E 'Table of Kindred and Affinity' has a very clear list of who you can't marry:

A Man may not marry his

      mother

      daughter

      adopted daughter

      father's mother

      mother's mother

      son's daughter

      daughter's daughter

      sister

      wife's mother

      wife's daughter

      father's wife

      son's wife

      father's father's wife

      mother's father's wife

      wife's father's mother

      wife's mother's mother

      wife's daughter's daughter

      wife's son's daughter

      son's son's wife

      daughter's son's wife

      father's sister

      mother's sister

      brother's daughter

      sister's daughter

But it doesn't actually mention 'himself', so clones seem to be okay then. (although I think they would be rather against the spirit of the thing)

    2. The Indomitable Gall

      Which means that...

So let me get this straight: the fifth doctor begat the clone of his tenth incarnation.

But if a clone's a clone, then they are genetically identical, so the fifth doctor must have had relations with someone genetically identical. So far, none of the doctor's regenerations have been female, making the only candidate for mother... the clone herself.

So at some point in the future (or past) there will be (or will have been) a mammoth case where The Doctor divorced The Doctorclone for infidelitous relationship with... The Doctor.

In any divorce, it's the kids that suffer, which in this case is also the wife. I bet she was so desperate for therapy that she will have been inventing the whole profession in a few centuries ago.

Re: Is marrying yourself legal? :)

Sorry, you may well know this but I've seen it on too many forums not to comment! Jenny wasn't a clone - technically or otherwise. A clone is an exact genetic copy. For example, identical twins are, genetically speaking, clones. However, Jenny was made by making two haploid gametes from the Doctor (randomly picking which chromosome of the source pair should go into the gamete, and presumably doing a bit of recombination on the way), then fusing them into a viable diploid cell and finally accelerating its growth into an adult - the process resulting in genetically different offspring. Assuming that Time Lords have the same sex determination mechanism as mammals, the genetics of the story were actually correct - you could make a female starting from a male but you could not make a male starting from a female.

Sorry, couldn't stop myself and I'll shut up now ;-)

      1. Allan George Dyer
        Boffin

        But...

Assuming mammalian sex-determination genetics, a population of clones would be Male 25%, female 75%. If the cloning is repeated in the following generations, the ratio gets more skewed. This contradicts the observed sex ratio in the colonists in that episode.

There is also probably going to be an issue with detrimental recessives.

        1. Matt Siddall

          matthotm

          <pedant>

Surely after 1 generation, assuming that they were 50% M and 50% F to begin with, the ratios would be:

          62.5% F

          25% M

          12.5% other (YY)

          based on:

Females, XX x XX always gives XX

Males, XY x XY gives XX, XY, XY, YY in equal measures

so all of the Females would give rise to females (50%) plus 25% of the males would give rise to females (25% x 50% = 12.5%) - total 62.5%

50% of the males would give rise to males - total 25% (50% of 50%)

25% of the males would give rise to other (YY chromosome - perhaps the machine selectively omits this possibility?)

One way to keep things in balance is to let the men "clone" themselves four times as often as the women (or three times if YY is prevented).

          </pedant>

      Then my own little clone

With its Y chromosome changed to X.

      And when I'm alone

Are you sure? Do the individual hearts of a Time Lord beat separately or in unison? I seem to have misplaced my encyclopedia of fictional xenobiology. If they did beat in unsion, then there is a case for it being four hearts beating as one, rather than four as two. And that's assuming that the Doctor's own daughter is indeed a "pure-bred" Time Lord. For all we know, the Mother of the Bride at this wedding could very well be Peri, Nyssa or (goodness forbid) Tegan, and that's if you assume that the Doctor didn't use the TARDIS to diddle one of his past (or future) companions. Four hearts beating as one or two? Let's get a handle on how many hearts we're dealing with first.
