back to article What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Homes and offices are awash with electromagnetic radiation these days, right across the dial, but do you know what frequencies the gadgets on your desk - and in your home - are spewing out? It's been a year or two since we tested your knowledge of radio. Last time we asked you to take a look at some street furniture and decide …

All of them are consumer items that you can buy in the high street,

what even the: "all shown in situ except one - for reasons which will be obvious if you recognise what it is" exception?? I have to confess not seeing that at pc world or boots for that matter..

    erm

Can I just point you in the direction of the grey egg with three buttons and a small LCD:

    <p><input type="radio" value="1. 24KHz" name="f6">14KHz

    <br><input type="radio" value="2. 433.9MHz" name="f6">344MHz

    <br><input type="radio" value="3. 650MHz" name="f6">344MHz

    <br><input type="radio" value="4. 6GHz" name="f6">6GHz

    <br></p>

I spotted the deliberate mistake(s), do I get a prize?

    Hmmm

If the listed options are correct, then some of those are illegal imports.

    Legal licence free (excluding RFID)

    27MHz

    49MHz

    433MHz

446MHz (only FM walkie talkies and one AMBE digital Codec model)

    866 to 870MHZ (868MHZ)

    2.4GHz ISM band

5.8GHz ISM band (WiFi and Registered Outdoor PMP only in some countries)

    RFID http://www.rfid-handbook.de/rfid/frequencies.html

Satellite is mostly Ku for DTH, but Tooway VSAT uses Ka band

So some of the stuff is illegal if the questions are correct.

Other stuff has used DIFFERENT bands at different times... Legally. Such as Mice and Keyboard have variously used 27MHz, 49MHz, 433MHz, 868MHz and 2.4GHz. MS has used 27MHz and 2.4GHz for similar models.

Note that 2.4GHz is not always Bluetooth or WiFi, even if it's digital.

    Some licensed gear uses 1.4GHz

Ireland has 10.450GHz for licence free Movement detectors

3.6GHz and 10.5GHz. FWALA (Licensed Fixed Wireless).

I think the quiz is flawed.

    418 & 915MHz is USA

      Awww. Don't spoil it!

I was having fun trying - and probably failing miserably - to guess.

Re: "418 & 915MHz is USA". Don't they have 'High Streets' as well? Or is Wal-Mart built on a farm?

Oh, re. the 'goodie-bag' I shall surely receive*, when you're tidying the office, pop the Moderatrix in there. On second thoughts, I'm too old. Plus, Finland's bloody cold right now, and the "old fellah's" hibernating.

And, Al Reg needs the Moderatrix far more than I.

*Yeah, right. Got as much chance as having a few pints with the pope.

    WTF?

    WTF?

Some of those were pure guesses for me, as I don't know what some of them are.

What is that thing that looks like a coil in a glass tube? The thing with two buttons that looks like it's plugged into a TV?

I've just noticed the Vodafone logo on that white router-thing, so I'm guessing that's a femto-cell not a WiFi router.

    You know you're getting old

When you can't even identify pieces of electronic apparatus.

Sic transit gloria monday and all that.

    This was a tough one

Used some wild guesses. Please update us with explanations and full answers after closing the entries! I'd love to know the story behind some of these devices.

I love competitions ! I declare in advance that I am willing to share any winnings with a wise and stunning ElReg moderatrix, if invited* to your fair kingdom to modestly collect them.

Or should that have been " ... share my winnings with any stunning and wise ElReg moderatrix, if invited* to your modest kingdom to fairly collect them " ? I can't decide.

This is not an offer of a bribe. More a plea for co-operation from the Commonwealth.

    *QF1, btwtks
