    Go ahead, underestimate them

    The Chinese originally got a lot of Russian aerospace tech in the 1950s, but haven't gotten much of anything since the Sino-Soviet split in the early 60s. And their later efforts look like homegrown evolution of Soyuz-style tech, not anything from the States.

    Perhaps you were thinking of the Soviet Buran, which was a Space Shuttle look-alike?

    The Chinese are serious about space, but they do tend to have a longer-term way of approaching things, particularly compared to the US next-quarter mentality.

    where's the hate?

    where's the conspiracy theme, drooling, war/killsat spewage? Or is it only Western society that earns LP's wrath? Because anyone not British/American obviously only does peaceful things, and never anything selfish or evil.

    What about the blatant fact that there's no need to orbit anything other than comms gear? If it were an American 'workshop" we'd here all sorts of snide evil assumptions, since such things are highly redundant. We'd get LP going off about "flag waving" and "propaganda" and probably some "jingoism" in there. Some other claptrap about saving money for the poor or some such rather than wasting it on an obvious "national pride" maneuver.

    But as the two candidates Clinton have learned, nothing pays as well as @rse kissing the Chinese.

    Hrm, I can only assume you are a yank, since every other country rasies it's kids to have the common sense to realise that if you go around bullying, lying and cheating then people will start to dislike you.

    So far the chinese have done very little to the rest of the world, other than act as a source of negative inflation and a shining example to opressive regimes everywhere (I notice that george's thought police have been taking notes)

    George (and his cronies) on the other hand have done everything they possibly can to rape and pillage the world in the process of lining their pockets (coca cola anyone? Maccie D's? Augusto Pinochet?) ... and you wonder why we hate your guts.
