back to article Spy app firm charges £1.86 to remove its software

Google may have "Don't be evil" as its motto, but DLP Mobile seems to be embracing the dark side in charging £1.86 for an app to remove its own spyware. Companies that sell software for spying on partners are already on highly-dubious moral ground, but selling an application to remove your own spyware would be a step too far …

    Discovering it

It should be easy enough to find out if this is installed on your phone by just going to your provider and getting an itemised printout of all the SMS you have sent. There would be a suspicious number of SMS sent to one number right after a normal SMS is sent.

    Sadly....

....I can still see some people actually buying this.

      Sadly....

So can Reveal. Sadly, I assume that is the point.

    I know I shouldn't be impressed... but..

Flog an app that's likely to get pulled - but get some coverage.

Then sell an app to the paranoid, who wonders if somebody installed it on their phone.

I'd love to see which program actually shift the most copies - Spy vs. Paranoid.

Its not just £1.86 to remove their spyware

You have to pay up front to find out if you have it to remove it.

    Very poor.

doesn't the market place not charge you if you uninstall within 24 hours?

... so makes the whole charging for a one-time app stupid.

    One born every minute!

You have to hand it to people with this much "chutzpah" to pull this scam off! Brilliant!

Can we hand it to them....

....after we've pulled the pin out of it?

Pull the pin out of what?

The new shirt you haven't even gotten on to your back yet?

Sorry I was still thinking about your govmint comment.

    FAIL

    Simple

google's return policy is ripe to be abused here.

    Install remover

    uninstall reveal

    uninstall remover

As long as it's uninstalled within 24 hours of first purchase no money is taken.

This does however assume that they've not crippled the removal of the remover, then there's a big infinite remover for the remover of the remover ....

    FAIL

Assuming the original was not free...

It would show up on said paranoid person's bank/credit card statement as it would need to be purchased using their Google checkout account...

Not only are both bits of software morally wrong but the first one (if priced) is pretty useless.

    money money money

I always knew the whole virus/malware industry was a scam. Release a worm then sell a cure, and release a virus. It can't be that hard to make it difficult for the hackers.

Look at the outcry MS recently provoked among the AVS community when they released a free and easy malware fixer.

There's money in tham thar infected folk.

    I await...

The next release that allows Reveal to be removed by Remover after sending all information to a central host, followed by a quick re-installation of Reveal.

At least it makes for a more interesting list of "additional features" than most verrsion upgrades....
