Blogging site Tumblr was knocked offline on Monday by the denizens of 4Chan, which was briefly floored itself during a tit-for-tat dispute that has recently escalated into open hacking attacks by both sides. Users of 4chan came together to launch a denial of service attack against Tumblr in response to gripes that the site was …
Did 4chan attack Tumblr simply because they had fluffier kittens?
I'm just having a hard time understanding motive. Yeah, okay, Anonymous attacked the RIAA because they like to pirate and scientologists because they're just douchebags, but what's the grievance with Tumblr here?
Kinda looks to me like two savage tribes attacking each other because the other tribe "isn't like us."
Nah, they didn't attack because they had fluffier kittens.
The thing to remember about 4chan (and to an extent Anonymous) is that they're not some group somewhere plotting to right the world's wrongs and become the next robin hood.
4chan is a bunch of people with too much time on their hands and a desire to provoke reactions. They didn't attack the RIAA because the RIAA is wrong... they did it because the RIAA annoyed them. A bunch of them didn't become anonymous and attack CoS to show the world the horrible wrongs the church does... they do it because it's fun.
Apparently attacking a site dedicated to fluffy (non-fluffer) kittens was seen as a source of amusement this week. Imagine the guys from the start of A Clockwork Orange if they couldn't indulge in personal activities but had to be limited to Internet actions.
...for absolutely no good (IMO) reason whatsoever. They thought it was a lulzy target, so they invaded and got it kicked off their host for ToS violations. The raid on the Epilepsy Foundation comes to mind too.
It's a little like watching an ant hill from a distance - trying to apply logic to their movements is somewhat of a useless exercise and definitely... whatever you do... do not poke it with a stick!
... is the allegation my Anonymous that tumblr users are "using 4chan memes". Seriously, that's it. It's been smouldering for weeks, this weekend it all got silly and DDoS tools were being bandied about on /b/ while tumblr users embarked on a brief campaign of flooding /b/ with new threads.
It's just a classic gang turf-war for geeks. These are kids that want to belong somwhere, but would get their asses kicked in a real street gang... These memes that they claim ownership of are their gang colours and signs.. At least for now. Soon enough it will escalate. It's just a matter of time until innocent bystanders just tying to read their emails or get their daily fix of lolcats will be caught in the crossfire. Pretty soon no place will be safe from these hooligans. Organized cime will follow... They will get into the dealing of penis pills to minors and soon no subnet will be safe.
that with Anontalk (4chan's traditional nemesis) finally destroyed for good back in September that it was only a matter of time before 4chan needed another enemy. So it would seem Tumblr is it. Although Anontalk really deserved to die, their shitty spam all over 4chan was really pissing me off. Good riddance. But if they want to attack a site for stealing the lolcat meme, surely they'd be better off hitting icanhazcheezburger, the biggest thieves of the lot? Maybe too big. We'll see.
and shut down bars for good? Only people with no lives go there anyway. The damage they do with their drunken attacks is small or even non-existent but it still doesn't give them the right to do it.
and shut down El Reg comments for good? Only people with no lives go there anyway. The damage they do with their vituperative attacks is small or even non-existent but it still doesn't give them the right to do it.
The best part of 4chan stories is getting the real insider scoop in the user comments (not saying this is). Much like juggalos (take that Tila Teq, jk) their are articulate insiders that must remain low key but are friendly to the cause. Causing havoc on the internet though weak is still amusing in a Bumfights video wrong kind of way.
I post to my Tumblelog every day. It was a bit slow yesterday, and I had to post a couple of links using the website rather than the toolbar button. But that's been it.
If you say that Tumblr was subject to a DOS attack, I believe you -- but I can assure you that the whole of Tumblr did not go down for a number of days. Didn't happen.
