back to article Iran nuclear plant shutdown due to 'leak'

Delays in bringing Iran's nuclear plant online at Bushehr are due to a "small leak" and nothing to do with the infamous Stuxnet worm, according to the country's energy minister. Bushehr was due to begin producing electricity in November, following the transfer of fuel to the core in September, but power production is being …

For lovers of conspiracy theory, or the seriously paranoid

What if Iran produced the worm itself so it (a) can blame Israel for the delay, (b) does not lose face (as much) when the reactor does not work, and (c) can go after dissident factions in Iran as co-conspirators in league with Zionists (always a nice ploy).

Me cynical? What makes you think that?

Nah! Much more likley is that the Russian FSB introduced the worm as a means of retaining control of the whole Iranian nuke processing chain should Iran get uppitty. After all, no-one spent more in the last thirty years on hacking Western computer systems than the Russians.

      (a) can blame Israel for the delay

So what if it can. I don't see how it would help Iran defend against an attack from outside by saying Israel infected its systems.

      (b) does not lose face (as much) when the reactor does not work

Why wouldn't it work? It's Russian built, and they have decades of experience with these things. Besides, the process for how a nuclear reactor works is so simple its taught in high school.

Iran has never shown it needs an excuse to go after dissidents, and very few experts on Iran doubt that Israel is helping to stir shit up in Iran.

      Conspiracy?

Just like Mahmoud al-Mabhouh forged a load of passports and then murdered himself, you mean?

Perchance Occam's Razor needs a bit of sharpening.

        RE: Conspiracy?

"Just like Mahmoud al-Mabhouh...." Ah, nothing like obsessing about an old and unrelated event to make sure you get a completely clear view of a current one. Was Al-MadBoob involved in the Iranian nuke project? No, he was an arms buyer for Hezbollah. Somehow, I don't think the same crew that whacked him would be looking to inject code into SCADA devices.

You lot are also very stupidly underestimating the CIA. I know it's thought hip and cool in the US to publicly diss the CIA at every chance, but they have a history of being on the button on Iran's and Syria's nuke projects. If you look at the evidence presented by the CIA regarding the Syrian reactor bombed by the Israelis, as part of the proof of what the building was they had onsite shots of the interior of the building, pics of the kit, and even a pic of one of North Korea's leading nuke engineers posing outside the building with one of Syria's top scientists. How the CIA managed to get someone inside to such a trusted level that they could get such pics speaks volumes on the capability the CIA has of penetrating even totallitarian regimes like Syria. Compared to that, sneaking some USB keys into Iranian office would be a breaze.

      re: It's a trap!

I wouldn't put it past them. At the same time, Israel is much more badass than the USA, so I kind of want to believe that it was Israel who worked on the virus and got it in there.

The "spies" who Iran is blaming for the infection are probably "hanging out" in some torture rooms right now.

    Russians ?

"developed in Israel and introduced by Russian sub-contractors who worked at Bushehr"

Or were they MOSAD agents who just happen to be carrying Russian passports.

    Anonymous, OBVIOUSLY!

    WTF?

Russia and America still lead the way in the ...

'leaks' league: Chernobyl and Three Mile Island!

No doubt the Israeli's are planning a much larger leak, as soon as the USA gives them enough bunker-busting bombs, courtesy of the American tax payer.

      Just FYI

Its US of A that buys bunker-busting bombs from Israel, not the other way around.

Besides that, experts have confirmed that Iran is not among the countries capable of producing this level of cyberwarfare. And think of it if iran was staging this up they could use bombs to destroy their computers and say it was Israel, not that anybody believes iran but they do not need to developed the most sophisticated malware known to man so far for a pointless con Iran anyway blames Israel for everything.

The UK would pick up the silver medal thanks to a splendid effort at turning the North of England into a glow-in-the-dark novelty with the 1957 Windscale fire.

    Not that late really

When you think of our very own Dungeness B. Ordered 1965 for delivery in 1970. Went critical in 1983 at 400% of the original price. Curiously neither EDS nor BAE were even involved.

    Joke

    The russians got the experience....

"Why wouldn't it work? It's Russian built, and they have decades of experience with these things. Besides, the process for how a nuclear reactor works is so simple its taught in high school."

Why those pesky RMBK reactors shouldn't work? They're cheap to run, not much training is necessary and they yield a lot of weapons grade fisible material. What could go wrong?

    Poor Iranian civilian population...

    Alert

    RMBK

What, you mean positive void coefficient isn't a good idea after all?

Combined with a worm custom made to mess with coolant pumps...

    *shudder*
