Didn't the ASP get a seat?

      Thumb Up

      Unfortunately not...

Although they did rank as the 4th or 5th party in every single state except Tasmania (pulling on average 2-3% of the primary vote). Behind the Lib/Nats, ALP and Greens.

So for a first time run thats actually not too bad... Hopefully in another 3.5 years we will see a better showing! =)

Political funding in Australia is distributed based on the vote achieved. The ASP will have a handy little warchest for the next election that should help a lot.

The Firewall is Dead Baby, Dead

It's dead because the Family First senator that formerly held the balance of power in the Senate lost his seat in the election and the Greens (who oppose it) now hold the balance of power. Senator Fielding (an infamous creationist and fundie Christian) was always the driving force behind the internet filter, the government only pushed it to keep him happy so he'd pass their other legislation.

Steve Fielding may yet sneak back in...

But with the Greens holding the balance of power in their own right, he would be irrelevant, and with both the Tories and Greens opposed, the filter is indeed dead.

    Belgium

I rather like the Belgian method of government, which is not to have one, and to have it resign when they do have one, and for no-one to really notice the difference one way or the other.

Fiona was so close to a Senate seat
