back to article NASA seeks soundtrack for final shuttle mission

NASA has invited Joe Public to vote on which two wakeup songs will rouse the crew of Discovery's 1 November STS-133 mission, and hopes musicians will rise to the challenge of writing some original music for the last shuttle flight when Endeavour blasts off on STS-134 on 26 February 2011. Discovery astronauts will enjoy a …

    Surely

Surely it has to be the Final Countdown.

    1. Thecowking

I was going to say that

      Word for word no less.

    2. CD001

      Ye-es

The Blaas of Glory version for preference...

Or how about White Zombie's "Welcome to the planet motherf..."

      Lyrics Mismatch

But don't the lyrics talk about going to Venus? Or maybe it's "penis" given the generally phallic under/overtones.

      1. Code Monkey

        True, but

I'm not aware of any songs specifically about the final countdown to a mission to the ISS.

      Final Countdown

If enough of us suggest this... they may take notice.

      Upvoting OP, Good on you.

( If you haven't upvoted the OP, you know you have to... come on... seriously )

    Begin the count...

It's a shame they aren't taking suggestions of existing songs that they haven't played.

Styx - Come Sail Away would be an excellent send-off methinks. (they climbed aboard their starship and holy frig they were aliens!)

Of course if they allowed the public to suggest these things there'd be no end of demands for Rick Astley and Final Countdown...

    Disappointingly...

Doesn't include Space Oddity or Star Trekkin........

      extremely disapppointing

They've also overlooked the, er, Vengaboys classic " Rocket to Uranus".

Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy

Best song to wake up to ever... And the film clip is the footage from the Excelsior stratospheric balloons jumps (longest freefall in history).

Other suggestion - See you later, alligator... ;)

    My vote.

Goes to "You're shit and you know you are" arranged for the kazoo, vocals provided by a choir of drunken Glaswegians.

Seems fitting for an alleged Space Agency's celebration of having no method for getting into space....

    FAIL

Come on, we all know what will REALLY happen

Odds-on that Justin Bieber's fans get hold of the vote and the poor final mission crew have to endure some kind of dire pre-teen warbling.

You would have thought NASA would have learnt from the previous voting debacle when instead of answering questions being put to the ISS crew by schoolchildren, they had to sit there (float there?) listening to McFly.

    One for the chief

NASA and the astronauts should play a song for the president who has done so much to dismantle the space program.

My vote is the new upcoming release by Cee-Lo. (NSFW).

      Yup...

Well I don't have flash, and I don't know the song titles by name, but if that's the opening theme from 2001, I'd say it makes a good alarm clock tone for any occasion. As long as you plan to have an epic day, every day, which is probably a reasonably good bet when you're orbiting something.

    Welcome

    The obvious choice is:

"Wake me up before you go-go,

Cuz I'm up and down into space like a yo-yo.

Wake me up before you go-go,

    Cuz I'm a professional clown called Bo-bo.

Wake me up before you go-go,

Cuz ... (insert other rhyme here)"

    Repeat ad infinitum

    For obvious reasons

It has to be "Sea Of Tranquility" by BJH:

    QUOTE:

We steered our ship to the Sea of all Tranquility

The only sound our voices, as star-struck we fly

    Our hopes ever high

That the songs we sing and the words we bring

    Should never die

We set our sights on the Sea of all Tranquility

Our pointless flight betraying now fallen we are

(Gods of old now broken and defaced)

    Compared to a star

And the final reach to that barren beach

    Is much too far

Yesterday our songs of glory shone

A dream of ages every one

We sold our souls for senseless gain

And brought our harvest home in vain

(Above the seven seas is one)

PC space cowboys - enough yee haw, more ho hum

Given the recent news that Islam not space exploration is NASA's top priority (http://yesbuthowever.com/nasa-chief-819050/), perhaps they they might find something useful (and different) by Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan - Pakistan's answer to Elvis.

    Currently leader...

The current leader is "Star Trek Theme Song (by Alexander Courage)" with twice as many votes as the next highest.

Nothing wrong with this song, but for the spoken part they should use the version used on the last episode, closing credits of "enterprise"

Would it be a bit inappropriate...

... to suggest Pink Floyd's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun"?

Or maybe something by Disaster Area?

PRS create a new "space" licence scheme based on the number of potential listeners on neighbouring planets within the time frame from the big-bang until now.

Given my state of mind in the early moning,

I prefer a wake up that (quietly) goes "beep beep beep....".
