back to article Voltaire kicks out top-of-rack 10-Gig Ethernet switch

If you're starting up a hedge fund, Voltaire has a new 10-Gigabit Ethernet switch that you probably want to take a look at as you set up your gear in a co-location facility near the New York, London or Tokyo stock exchanges. The Vantage 6024 Layer 2/3 top-of-rack 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch announced today is the workhorse …

    BGP to the rescue

The exchange needs to adjust their BGP settings to that their traffic hits the network in Des Moines...solved that problem.

Nice but a sloppy job reporting..

Any idea on a price for this puppy?

If you're going to push a PR piece on some new hardware, try and get an estimate on price?

    Isn't this just a BNT 8124?

Isn't the Voltaire 6024 just a relabeled BNT 8124? The quoted power consumption of "115-168W" is quite suspicious:

    http://www.bladenetwork.net/rackswitch-g8124.html

If so, will the 6048 (aka BNT 8124) and the 8500 run the same software, or is the idea that Voltaire's "VMA" will paper over the differences in switch OS?

    WTF?

    Makes no sense

    So they're selling a 24-port 10G switch, a NIC, a cable, and some software for $2k/node!?!

You can buy the same 10G switch port for $500 (list) from their partner BNT, and a NIC plus cable for another... $600? Leaves $900/node for the VMA software. Really?

Also, if I'm building a 150-node cluster using 288-port switches, why do I need 24-port top-of-rack switches at all? Doesn't it seem like a slightly-more-than-half-populated 288-port switch should do the trick? Is the Voltaire 8500 linerate any-port-to-any-port?

Finally, why are their benchmarks only against Arista? What do they look like compared to Cisco and Foundry/Brocade?

Yes but it's the High Frequency Trading version

These high frequency trading guys, they're the bees knees you know. That ten thousandths of a nanosecond at an HFT outfit makes all the difference between your pension being something you can hope to live on one day versus your pension being a worthless asset (like the Nortel UK fund, where is El Reg['s coverage of those shenanigans?).

These HFT guys are so competent at everything they touch, so all-knowing, that no one could possibly take them for a bunch of fools with more money than sense, not this outfit, not former C-for-FPGAs outfit Celoxica, not any one of a bunch of outfits now foolishly hoping to get a few scraps of City largesse.

They are the City. Worship them, for they are our Lords and Masters. As it was, is now, and ever more shall be.

Flame. IT's time for another great fire. May they burn in Hell forever.
