back to article Vodafone blocks World Cup, except for iPhone owners

Vodafone is still blocking RTSP streams, for the sake of the children, eight months after claiming the block was a temporary measure, thoughiPhone users remain free to stream what they like. The block was instituted last October, and at that time Vodafone claimed it was a temporary measure while servers were being upgraded. …

    But the iPhone uses HTTP...

And if Vodafone blocked that...well you get the picture.

      If vodafone blocked http

Then no...you wouldn't get the picture

So things like the Dell Streak

which is I think locked to Voda, and it's primary function is being a small size media tablet, so rendered almost pointless by it's only carrier?!?

What were they thinking?! Apart from scaring off at least one potential new customer :/

    Technology

As a Vodafone customer I find their network robust with good coverage in the most bizarely unexpected of places where mu chums with other quality networks struggle, Vodafone has made an exception with Lichfield for some reason where they seem to have forgotten to allow for coverage.

However do seem to have forgotten there is more to their business that an audio network and struggle with the associated technology.

Their website is laughable, the "my account section" specialises in 3 clicks where one would do and hides important info in obscure places. In fact the website is a trip back to early business type sites.

Their billing has been so poor that a random number generator may be more accurate.

That is only two and I am stopping now before I go into full rant but can they not employ someone who understand these other aspects of their business and improve upon them?

    Simple solution...

Simple solutions, ban kids from having access to mobile phones that do anything but make calls and send texts. Job done...

Would save the parents a f*ckload on bills too probably...

Fairly Poor Behaviour & Badly Managed

By the look of the forums and the harsh methods of Vodafone admins on closing any threads that are vaguely like the original one, this does not bode well for Voda customers (myself included).

It is a shame that this is being so badly managed, I am inclined to think that the RTSP stream blocking has nothing to do with compliance with Ofcom regs (as that is covered surely by the standard enable adult content are you over 18 check) but more to do with bandwidth usage. Still with their change in policy on charging punters who go over the feeble 500meg allocation I would imagine this will cover bandwidth costs for the worst offenders.

I think they should engage with their customers rather than closing threads and be more aware of what people expect to be able to do with smart phones nowadays and there should not be one rule for one handset (even if it is the Jesus Phone) and one rule for another.

As I a contemplating upgrading to the iPhone 4 I wish I had more options in my local area other than Vodafone to give my business to.

    Absurdity in the Extreme

Surely this is much easier than they are making out ??

You just block all traffic to Pay As You Go tarrif's, all monthly tarrif's can be left open of any blocking.

The reason being, you cannot enter into a financial contract/higher purchase in the UK under the age of 18, QED anyone on a monthly charging structure is over the age of 18 and can deprave themselves in any way they see fit (subject to Extreme porn laws etc).

    Not exactly true......

I'm currently watching the game live on my HTC Magic using Vodafone. I just use the app called beebplayer from the market place, lets me watch all live and iplayer BBC TV programs over 3G or wifi.

So anyone with an Android device on vodafone can watch BBC.

    No more beebplayer

@Clotcud - if only beebplayer hadn't been removed from the Android market I'd be agreeing with you :)

    Live viewing

I have used the beeplayer apk and installed fine, however there is nothing available on the 'live streaming' pages, all I can get is the catchup stuff from iPlayer, this too is a HTC Desire on Vodafone.

    Journalism FAIL!

    *Faceslap*

You can only watch iPlayer live streams on Vodafone and 3 networks in the UK. And iPhones can't live stream iPlayer at all.

  16. Watashi

    Network not found

And at least you can get a decent 3.5G signal with Vodafone! Couldn't even get a reliable 2G signal in Edinburgh when I was on Orange.

  17. Watashi

And at least the website works

Oh, and don't get me started about Orange's website. I had to get them to reset my account four times in two years 'cause I couldn't log in. For one period I was locked out for about two months.

    vodafone LOSE

I have just gotten off the phone to vodafone after complaining about this.

I have just been given free access to their TV service for a year :)
