back to article Watch bandit IDed by own mobe snap

A hi-res mobile phone image of a man handling stolen watches gave forensic coppers the evidence needed to get the villain sent down yesterday. The quality of the image on Stephen Taylor's Sony Ericsson W995 was sufficient for a forensic image specialist to get an enhanced picture of Taylor's palm print. The match was enough …

Ah, but if it had been CSI...

They'd just have zoomed in and enhanced the single pixel that was the reflection of the chap taking the picture, until they had a high-resolution full colour image of the miscreant. Probably even better than the official police image, too!

Ashton CID still have a way to go, but I like their style.

      Pah...

You joke, but my partner's father is a pathologist and he assures me that it is routine for them to do autopsies with full make up, no hair cover or face masks and to have a computer on the same table as the body. And, all of their computers have projection screens rather than monitors, so: it's true, it's all true...

He also listens to a lot of The Who when he's working.

Plod prove effective, second coming imminent

Well done indeed. Paint me jaded but I was halfway expecting them to say something along the lines of "but this just proves we need moar powahs" or something equally trite. Certainly they'll never give any of it up, even if they strictly don't need it, and they know it.

Good point to remember that police basically rely on crooks' own stupidity, and that's perfectly fine. No part of their job requires everybody else to give up large swathes of civic liberties or to submit to big brother style oversight. The plod are learning to use the new tech so they no longer should be allowed to claim ever more power to deal with things they haven't mastered yet. Nobody should be given power over stuff they don't understand, really, but I digress. Time to roll back some of the knee jerkery, perhaps.

    The police's job

Now I like this; THIS is what the police should be doing.

Let people look at whatever cartoons they like, or take photos of St. Paul's or Red busses without the police wasting their time on them.

In an ideal world, he would now serve ALL of the 10 months BEFORE being considered for release on parole...

    Suspect bailed

"A 17-year-old girl was assaulted during the incident" - now why does it not surprise me that the suspect that was arrested in relation to the burglary has been bailed so he can commit yet more offences?

...not so cute, albeit, in the mugshot ><

But hey, that was a clever move, on the investigator's part. Another techie human-interest piece hits the wire - without marketroid influence, even! Thanks, El Reg.

    @Gordon Barret

He's been bailed so that when he finally goes to court he won't be released immediately for time served as that looks bad.
